The S20 million hospital was built with a hogan-shaped entrance. Inside is a hogan-shaped healing room for traditional Navajo healing ceremonies. A small clinic served Chinle since the 1950's. The new hospital opened for outpatients only. Additional funding is needed for housing in order for the hospital to be opened to the public, according to Steve Chickering, nursing director. The hospital will eventually include dental services, maternal and child health, mental health, a nursery, obstetrics, pediatrics, inpatient and outpatient care, a pharmacy, physical and respiratory ther- apy, renal dialysis, social services, surgical suite, vision, and x-ray. Senator Dennis DeConcini, who was at the opening ceremonies, helped the tribe get funding from Congress for the hospital. In 1977, Evangeline Hartsock formed a steering committee to plan for the hospital. She and other residents convinced the Navajo Tribal Council, Indian Health Service, and Congress that Chinle needed a hospital. Chinle patients can now be treated more rapidly and conveniently in Chinle, rather than at IHS facilities in Window Rock, Gallup, or Tuba City. Area residents donated over 100 acres of grazing land for the hospital. Pictured are Sarah Davis, Barbara Tso, and Juanita Gorman. 1 K lax 5 1, X 6' 1 . , x . A . 'f ' Preserving Tradition The tenth annual Navajo Traditional Song and Dance Festival took place February 22 and 24 at Rock Point Community School. Participants came from 22 schools throughout the reservation. Performances were based on traditional Navajo songs and dances. Navajo-related performances included the Yeii Bicheii, gourd dances, feather dances, round and skip dances, belt basket dances, shoe games, and corn grinding song acts. Songs were about different aspects of Navajo life, including livestock, land, the Joint Use Area, war veterans, and love songs. The festival is to encourage Navajo reservation schools to teach Navajo singing and dancing. Funding was originally provided by Title IV, the federal program designed to meet the special needs of Indian students. Since Title funding was cut this year the school provided the money, and trophies were donated by local individuals and businesses. Fl Gourd dancers from Chinle Primary School are Tara Mitchell, April Claw, Jamie Yazzie, Victoria Mitchell, and Lenora Burbank. 5. . VICA is a national organization and has been active in Arizona for 16 years. The instructors are advisers for their own fields of expertise. Bill Smith instructs Auto Shop, Jewell Hodson teaches Cosmetology, Sharon Harrel provides nursing instruction, Don Nelson teaches Heavy Equipment, and Nelson Christie, Diversified Occupations. The local Skills Olympics was held January 26, and students competed in Cosmetology, Nursing, and Welding. Cosmetology had three new contests this year, and 28 students, almost half the students enrolled, participated in manicuring, facials, or hairstyling. First place winners were Charlotte Curley in hairstyling, Yolanda Benally in manicuring, and Marietta Lewis in facials. The officers performed an Emblem Ceremony similar to the one done at the Regional and State Skills Olympics. Heavy Equipment planned their own competition at a later date, since mud prevented heavy equipment operation when the other skills areas competed. First place winners received a medallion, second and third place winners received ribbons, and everyone participating was given a certificate. The next Skills Olympics was held in Flagstaff at Northern Arizona University March 10. Those winners went to State Competition in Phoenix April 16 and 16. State winners went to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the National Skills Olympics. Last year Kevin Shay from Chinle went to the National Skills Olympics. Nursing Classes Chinle High School offers three main career programs in its nursing program: Health Occupations Exploration, Basic Nursing, and Advanced Nursing. Health Occupations Explorations helps students chose the medical career most suited to their interests. Students are given information about careers as doctors, nurses, physical therapists, medical secretaries, hospital diaticians, dentists, and opthamologists. Students discover the years of education required, skills needed, and expected salaries. The Basic Nursing class teaches nursing aide skills. Students learn nursing theory and practice patient care with a life-size manikin and each other. Basic nursing students do not work on patients. The Advanced Nursing class is for students who have had Basic Nursing and are still interested in being nurses. Students can apply what they learned in Basic Nursing four days a week, two hours a day, in actual patient care. They also review and learn more theory about how to apply nursing skills. Students learn job survival skills, life skills, and do research papers and nursing case study plans. ln the nurses' aid section of VICA Skills' Olympics, Regina Winney took first place, Sonja Charlie took second, and Kathy Hothan was third. 5 t 4 . i l 3 2 5 5 . l i 'Qi Lori Bitsui practices nurses' aide skills with Adalene Kee at the Skills Olympics.
