Some were timid, some were frightened, some were confident; but all were anxious to learn what our wonderful school had m store for each of them. Some of these have already dropped out for one reason or another, and as we count them now there are only 107. Here they are! We feel sure the future of China Grove High will be in good hands for the next few years. Treasurer Dear Diary, May, 2955 As I look back to August 2 9 , 2952 , I recall a large group of bewildered, mixed- up freshmen. There was, unbe l levmgly, now a hundred twenty of us. The upper class- men and our advisors, Miss Holt, Mrs. Kepley, Mr. Deal, and Coach Kelly, were of such assistance that in no time we became adjusted to the methods of high school. Me did little that year besides study, but I ' m sure not one of us will forget that memorable game with Landis in football when we tied 7 - 7 . Then came our sophomore year of 52 - 53 . Quite a few of our members moved or decid¬ ed to discontinue their schooling for we entered with only eighty-four members. Mi ley Drye, our freshman president, was replaced by Minfry Mhicker. Doris Stiller, Peggy Jo Sasser, Janet McCluney and Helen Frye added to the prestige of our class when they were chosen to represent the school band as letter girls and flag bear¬ ers. The student council was begun this year with Philip Mauldin representing our class as treasurer. Our class, though we had dwindled m number to seven¬ ty-four, reached our goal with Doris Stiller and Morris Overcash as high sales¬ men. Immediately after this we received our class rings, something we all had looked forward to. The Fall Festival came and went over with flying colors, but we had the honor of having our own Larry Patterson as Halloween King. DORIS LOUISE KARRIKER Life is not life at all without delight. Philip Mauldin took office m the Student Council again, but this time as Vice-President. The Christmas Play, The Star in The East, was a great success. Then the long awaited event, the Junior- Senior Banquet, took place. tfhat fun it was as our theme Moonlight and Roses be¬ came a reality. 4 s the class of 54 went to find success they chose as marshalls, Nancy Morrison, Larry Patterson, Claudette Overcash, i l iley Drye and Winfry thicker. Dear Diary, this has been our every dream and yet too soon it is coming to a close. We will very shortly be stepping into a huge and magnificent world as adult men and women, no longer to be considered Children. Though we are a very small class of sixty-two, we are leav¬ ing behind us a great challenge to the lower classes. Wmfry Whicker led the class as president. Larry Patterson was elected as president of the Student Council. Peggy Jo Sasser stood with him as secretary. Margie Martin and Jerry Bradshaw were greatly welcomed into our class as fellow seniors. Our greatest task was to publish the annual. Philip Mauldin served as editor-in-chief. Our colors were chosen as orchid and pink with the beautiful flower, an orchid. The trip to Washington in the spring will be long remembered by many of us. The Junior-Senior this time given m our honor, was marvelous. The producing of the Senior Play was wonderful, but it brought to realization that school was coming to an end.Senior privileges were certainly a new experience. Dear Diary, we do not know how to say thank you enough to our ad¬ visors, Mrs. Odell, Mrs. Smith, our principal, Mr. Price, and our dis¬ trict principal, Mr. Carson, for their everlasting patience and advice which they gave so freely. We pray that we shall always endeavor to hold fast to our aims and goals. That we shall always try to fulfill our motto: Sic Parvis Magna (From small, comes great.) HELEN FRYE, Historian Dear Diary, Our record would not be complete if we did not include one of the most important characters around our school-our janitor, Walter Caldwell. Page Twenty-Six Dear Diary, Halloween is here! Tonight the Junior Class presented the Hallow¬ een Carnival which was preceded by a talent show and the crowning of the King and Queen. Bonnie Stirewalt was a beautiful queen. I remember the excitement of casting votes and the look on her face when she was crowned. Ah, twas a lovely sight. The race was close, the competition keen, and when the winner was announced the applause was tremendous. AVIS ARANT Dear Diary, One of the most beautiful girls my eyes ever beheld is the adora¬ ble Avis Arant. she rode m the Kannapolis Christmas parade as Miss Merry Christmas, she was ever so lovely. The day of the Salisbury Veteran ' s Day Parade found her blue eyes sparkling and her hair shin¬ ing as though it were golden, as she rode proudly past, wearing the title of Miss China Grove. Another title, too. That of Miss China Grove High does she honor¬ ably possess. Page Twenty-Eight PEGGY RUSSELL AVIS ARANT FAYE NESBIT AVICE TATE JUDY WALKER Dear Diary, Homecoming! Tonight was the most anticipated game of the football season for the band and beauty of our school. Once again Avis Arant attained another title that she so well deserves. As she walked across the field as Miss Homecoming, escorted by Harry Waddell, Mr. Football, she was a breath-taking beauty. Following her were the attendants: Peggy Russell, Senior; Avice Tate, Junior; Judy Walker, Sophomore; and Faye Hesbit, Freshman. We ac¬ quired one new coach, a new band director and had the opportunity of holding on to, m our opinion, one of the best basketball coaches m the business. Our new coach, Mr. Linde r, has really accomplished what seems like miracles with our boys ' football and basketball teams. Miss King, our band director, has been bringing our band more and more into the spotlight of popularity. The great amount of joy and zeal that she contains makes every one that works with her work just a little harder. Mr. Bame has the praise of all that know him. Although last year was his first year at China Grove High School, he showed his loyalty by making our girls ' Basketball team real champions m every sense of the word. This year, the team seems to be headed m the same direction. Dear Diary: Our school band could not possibly be complete without the mspir- ln S girls that lead it. These being the majorettes, the flag bearers and the letter girls. Each girl does honor to the position she holds as well as to herself. They are as listed: Majorettes: Linda Lipe, Jeanette HoIdsclaw, Claudette Weaver. Flag Bearers: Carolyn Buckwell, Barbara Lentz. Letter Girls: Melba Beaver, Doris Stiller, Helen Frye, Phyllis Arthurs. Page Thirty-Six • « Dear Diary, It is quite evident all that have seen them have the admiration school spirit they of S 0 touches m its wonder- that our cheerleaders m action. The true plainly and joyously contain holds everyone it ful spell. Surely we can say that our school has received a prize sec¬ ond to none; this prize being our fine group of cheerleaders. They add beauty as well as spirit to our numerous sports. They are as listed: Mildred Burrell, Chief Charles Faggart, Sylvia Hooks, Shirley Walker, Avis Arant, Patsy Eller, Peggy Russell, Sybil Jordan, Avice Tate, Judy Walker, Glenn Bell. Page Thirty-Seven Dear Diary, Our football record this year wasn ' t too impressive. But the boys showed fine spirit m many of the games and we are proud of them. This was the initial year in the South Piedmont Football Conference, which proba¬ bly accounts for our rather obscure record. Our boys were also young and inexperienced. And, Diary, let me say too how very proud we are of our new coach, Robert Linder. He is surely tops with us.
