After final exams, senior privileges, and graduation the ’53 seniors will leave the place of honor to the rising senior class. Our class entered high school as 119 frightened, bewildered fresh¬ men. By the leadership of Mr. Carson, our principal, our teachers and Danny Safriet, our president, we soon began to enjoy high school. We began our sophomore year with 92 members. Our president was Donald Patterson. This was not a very eventful year but as we started our junior year things really began to happen. Eighty students started with the class. Our Fall Festival was very successful. In the spring we sponsored the Junior-Senior banquet. This was held at the Hotel Con¬ cord. Our president was Charles Yates. Donald Patterson was elected president and Bobby Mauldin vice- president the senior year. Soon after this the Student Council was organized and Donald Patterson was elected as president. This made it necessary for him to resign as senior class president. Bobby Mauldin was then elected president and Jerry Smith vice-president. There were 72 seniors at the beginning of the school year but we lost a member. Sarah Mills, who had taken work in summer school, advanced to our class so we still have our original number of graduates. The highlights of our senior year were: the organization of the Stu¬ dent Council; the completion of the lunch room and Agricultural Build¬ ing; the senior play, “Silas Marner,” which was very successful; the establishing of the recreational program; the Junior-Senior banquet sponsored by the juniors; and the trip to Washington, D. C. As we, the seniors, go out to face the future we hope that each of us will always strive toward the goal set up by our motto: NOT MERELY TO EXIST, BUT TO AMOUNT TO SOMETHING CAROL BAKER. Signed DORIS BENSON, Class Lawyer CLASS PROPHECY 1952-53 MAY 1: Today I begin my trip around the United States to visit all the members of my senior class, the 1953 class of China Grove High School. It has been ten years since the day we left school for the last time. I am anxious to learn what each of my former classmates has been doing. Most of them have moved to different states, but some are still faithful to North Carolina. At China Grove, SHIRLEY BEAVER is Private Sec¬ retary to the Manager of Belk-Cline Co. PEGGY HILL, who was recently voted “Little Miss America,” is also a resident of China Grove. In Salisbury we see SYLVIA ALDRIDGE PINYAN and her husband. Buddy, happily married. WILLIAM BARKLEY is the President of the Hot Rod Club of America. His speed finally paid off. GARY BAR¬ RINGER is the owner of the new Ford Motor Company, Inc. DOROTHY HEILIG is happily mar ried to Bob and they have five sets of twin girls. After a successful career of modeling in New York, CAROLYN OVER¬ CASH has settled down to a life of married bliss. JO ANN WILSON, Chief of the Women Police of Salisbury, is upholding law and order. Out at Catawba College, PATSY FORBES is teaching piano. It seems that titles belong to the ' 53 class. PEGGY FAGGART has been chosen The Outstanding Housewife of North Carolina.” DORIS BENSON, who has just resigned as Vice-President of BROWN-BENSON DRUG CO. at China Grove, is married to a famous Army Lieutenant. Over at Wingate, North Carolina, CAROL BAKER is doing a little writing. She has just finished a book entitled, “How to Catch Your Man.” GARY (EARS) BEAVER, who is all-star football player for State College, isn’t letting the fact that he is small get him down. Also at State College is FRANK YOST. Frank is the Professor of Agriculture. The Governor of our fair State is none other than CHARLES YATES. MAY 2: I am in Norfolk, Virginia, today, the first stop of my trip. I had a short visit with JAMES (BUSTER) FESPERMAN. James is a toy air¬ plane designer. JOYCE WALL NASH is staying in Norfolk with her soldier husband, Tommy. MAY 3: I arrived in Washington, D. C., at 3:10 P. M. I had a luncheon date with Peggy Herrin, who is a very busy woman. She is Secretary of State. Peggy plans to run for the office of President next term. I had dinner with two of my former classmates, HAZEL POSTON and HELEN WALTER. Hazel is Secretary of the War Department. Helen, who is taking a well-earned rest, has just completed a series of 120 books, “Learn Bookkeeping in One Easy Lesson.” We chatted for awhile then I had to rush to the station to catch my train to New York, the next place that I am to visit. MAY 4: I went to the Matinee Performance of the Barnum and Bailey Circus where MAXINE BENFIELD is the featured Trapeze Artist. JANICE HOLCOMBE is also with the circus. She is a tight rope walker. It was a thrilling experience to watch them perform. JANE LINGLE. PEGGY RUE HUNTER, MARY CASPER, and I had luncheon at the press room cafeteria of the HERALD TRIBUNE, where Jane is featured Gossip Columnist. Peggy Rue is preparing for a trip to South America to be with her missionary husband. Mary is studying art at the Maxwell School of Art. Later that same evening I attended the opening of the Ice Follies Review. BARBARA RITCHIE and MARTHA WALKER are the featured skaters. I visited DONALD PATTERSON at the C. B. S. T. V. studios where he is News Director. Don also owns a line of radio stations. While I was at the studio I watched the televising of the “I’m Fond of Dezi,” starring NANCY FESPERMAN SCARBOR¬ OUGH. PAT ELLER is feature writer for LIFE MAGAZINE. She is doing an article of the future of America. I had to stop by M. D. Mc¬ Night’s office to see him. M. D. is a much demanded Heart Specialist. MAY 6: After two busy days in New York it is a welcome relief to come to such a quiet town as Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where COY SHIVE owns a beautiful little garage. Coy explained the garage business, confusing me completely. Soon it was time for me to board my train again, this time headed West. MAY 7: Arriving in Detroit, Michigan, I was surprised to see that TOMMY SEAMON, busy owner of the Hudson Cadillac Company, had come to see me at the station. As I had only a few minutes, I could tell Tommy of only a few of the people I had seen so far. Then, again, I was on my way West. MAY 8: In Las Vegas, Nevada, I visited MAX BOGER and BETTY HAMP¬ TON. Max is Ace Pilot of the Nevada Jet Planes Inc. Betty has been chosen “The Most Outstanding Female Athlete in the World.” She is leaving soon for Iceland for the festivities there. ELAINE LOWDER is owner of Rocket Airlines. She makes two trips a week to Mars. MAY 9: My next stop is at the ranch of BILLY VANDERFORD and ELWOOD WINDERS. They raise all the sheep that are used in the State of Nevada. Later. I had dinner at Stirewalt’s Sea Food Restaurant. The successful owners of this “Traveler’s Haven” are NANCY STIREWALT and HELEN STIREWALT. We talked for an hour or so then it was time for me to be on my way again. Tomorrow I will see a lot of my friends in sunny California. MAY 10: Hollywood! Home and workshop of the stars! First, a stop at M. G. M Studios, where I had a delightful chat with RUBY BRADSHAW, the newest dancing sensation since Debbie Reynolds. Also at M. G. M. is DE LOIS FISHER, who is Secretary to Mr. Cecile B. De Mille. BOBBY MAULDIN has ju st signed a contract with Universal International Stu¬ dios. Bob is America ' s Heart-throb. Over at Republic Studios JIMMIE MENIUS is very busy producing his latest picture, “Go East Young Lady.” PEGGY CLEMENT is secretary to the “King of the Cowboys,” Roy Rogers. Peggy and I had a long talk and it was my pleasure to meet her cowboy boss. I had to hurry on because I had a dinner date with COLLEEN MCDONALD UPRIGHT and HELEN HUNTER. Colleen is hair stylist at Warner Bros. Studios, and Helen, the singing rage, is vacationing in California after a long tour of Europe. I didn’t get to see DONALD HOWARD. He was away on location making a movie, “It’s May in Sing Sing.” GLENN STIREWALT is very busy these days. He is trying to build a stairway to the stars. Before leaving California T went to see JIMMY WILLIS and DEAN SHEETZ. They, incidentally, have taken the place of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. What a wonderful two days this has been. I hate to leave so soon but I must be on my way. MAY 12: Down in New Mexico now, I saw PEGGY CHRISTY, who is assist¬ ant to the Governor of their state. After we toured the capitol city of New Mexico, we went to the station where my train was waiting to take me to more excitement and adventure. JERRY SMITH is Governor of the state of New Mexico. MAY 13: I’m in cattle country now, Arizona. There are miles and miles of nothing but sand, but in the middle of this vast country is a dude ranch owned by FAYE UPRIGHT and LOUISE MORROW. They had a trail hike planned so I went along. We had a wonderful time but, like so many times before, the time caught up with me and I had to hurry to catch my train. MAY 14: Texas! The Lone Star State! I was the guest of NEDDA BEBBER. the wife of a Texas Millionaire. Nedda is planning a tour abroad soon. She is finally going to Paris! EVYLEEN STIREWALT is doing a series of lectures on Atomic Energy, and how to use it in the home. MAY 15: In Shreveport, Louisiana, I attended the St. Mark ' s Church where RICHARD SEABOCK is the Pastor. WAYNE SECHLER is also in Shreve¬ port. He has bought Mr. Sear’s share of Sear’s and Roebuck. It is now Sechler and Roebuck. MAY 16: SARA MILLS is head Pharmacist at the Miami Institute of Medicine. BILL CARTER and GLENN CARTER, famous pitchers for the Phila- delphia Phils, are training with the club at Sarasota. PATTIE OWENS and MILDRED FREEZE, owners of a luxurious hotel on the beach of Miami, are relaxing in the sunshine with their handsome husbands. Also down at the beach I met JERRY GOODNIGHT and VIRGINIA WILSON. These two girls are Powers Models. I had an interesting talk with BETTY JO SEAMON, who is married to a famous deep sea diver. As I was boarding my train, I ran into DANNY SAFRIET. Dan is on his way to New York where he will board a plane for Iceland to take part in the annual contests there. MAY 17: I stopped by the University of Georgia to visit NORMA BAKER. Norma is married to the handsome football coach there. MAY 18: The blue grass state of Kentucky is my last stop before I get back home again. At the race track I saw BILL HOUCK. He owns a line of horses. His famous “Breadbasket” won the Championship. It was the first race that I have seen and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also at the race was NANCY FESPERMAN BURLEYSON who, with her husband, owns a small mansion in the beautiful blue hills. MAY 19: Home again! What a thrilling eighteen days this has been. I wish it could have been longer but you know how hard it is for a private secre¬ tary to get away from her job. When I get my next vacation, I plan to start all over again. Signed JO ANNE FISHER, Class Prophetess
