Our story of high school is divided into four steps, and our high school days will be remembered for each step made to achieve the happiness and success which we must find. Step one of the story began in 1947 when 120 boys and girls started to school as fresh¬ men. It took us a while to catch on to changing classes, but after we did catch on, we thought it was grand. Kenneth Mayhew was our class president Mr Carson, our prin¬ cipal, was also new, but he tried to help us along and put into our heads that we came to school for knowledge. In 1948, we came back to school to find that our class had dwindled to 83. As Soph¬ omores we found ourselves more advanced in knowledge. Arnold Bradshaw was elected as president of our class. We found that our subjects were getting more complicated and reauired more studying. Under the guidance of Mr Carson the year of 1948-1949 was very successful. We came back to school in 1949, a class of 66. The junior class had a magazine sale and cleared a considerable sum of money. Dickie Ayers, president of our junior class, did a very fine job of planning the Fall Festival, held in October and the Junior-Senior Banquet in April, held at Concord. Mr. Carson was again our principal. In the fall of 1950, 62 members returned to China Grove High School to complete their high school career. Clinton Sechler, president, led the class through many activities A Senior Play, under the direction of Mrs Aldena Smith was given in the spring. We were entertained by the juniors at the Junior-Senior Banquet. In May, members of the class went on a trip to Washington, D. C. We had yet to take our final exams, and after these were over, senior privileges were granted. Then graduation and who knows what the future holds for us. Our success in life will depend upon ourselves, the knowledge we have acquired in school, and our ability to get along with other people. Always remember our motto, They Conquer, Who Believe They Can . Lynn Kelly Barger Class Historian LIST WILL Mil TESTAHEST We, the Senior Class of nineteen hundred and fifty-one, being ready to depart from this life of study and pleasures find it necessary to distribute some of the riches we possess. I, Joyce Anne Safrit, having nothing to will to anyone, do leave my love and best wishes with China Grove High School. Joyce Anne Safrit Lawyer CLASS PROPHECY Here it is 1965 and tonight as I watch my ultra-modern T. V. set, what should be the next program but that wonderful show, Here They Are . Tonight a high school class of 1951 from somewhere in the U. S. has been chosen and we will travel via T, V. and see what the graduates of that outstanding school are now doing. I wonder what school they have selected? Am I surprised when it is announced that China Grove High of China Grove, N. C. has been selected to represent the Classes of 1951 on Here They Are . The first place we visit is the Capital of N. C. where Gov Fred Pinion, candidate for President, speaks to the T. V. audience. His personal secretary Louise Lambert is on hand to assist him. Two other state officials with them are Audrey Stirewalt who, believe it or not, is warden at the State Penn, and Charles Sifford, who is the farmer ' s choice, representing Rowan County in the state legislature. Next, we stop at Chapel Hill and U, N. C. On hand to greet us is Dr. Clinton Schler, head of the Science Department! With him are Elsie Turner and Jean Silliman who are now professors here. Elsie is in the language field and Jean is a Research Chemist. Oh yes, and here is Joyce Ann Safrit, or she was in ' 51, she is now the lovely wife of one of Carolina ' s football coaches. From here we go to Duke University. Kelly Barger, Best Athlete of our class, is now head coach of the undefeated Duke Blue Devils. Back over at N C. State we find Jimmy Albright, who is now a Professor in the Agri¬ culture School This week-end he has as guests Harold Goodman and his wife, the former Dot Albright. And so we continue our trip; on all the billboards we see Nathan Adams and Donald Allman, Dare-Devils on Wheels , they finally found a use for their speed. In Spencer we find Bertha Hay very happily married to Jimmy, a typical housewife and mother. Between C. G. and Salisbury there is another one of our former girls, Esther Mae Morris, and her husband with their twelve children--she found they were cheaper by the dozen! !! Bobby Sides, we discover, is now a rich man for he is manager of the Groundhound Coach Co. Hilda Sides and Jeanette Belkw ere in New York for about four years as Fashion Models but now they are both married and have several sweet children. Another one of our girls, Doris Sechler, who was voted Best Dressed and Best Looking, was a Powell ' s Model but is now happy to be married to Ralph In Washington, D. C, we have a short message brought to us by our good-looking and popular Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Arnold Bradshaw. Bobby Morris is also here having made a quick trip from Russia to be on hand for the show. Bobby is now our Ambassador to Russia and he is very successful in his duties. And up on Broadway we find a couple of our former students, Janette Benfield is starring in a long-run hit, The Run-around . Playing opposite her is the past Mr. America and the Heart-throb of America, Kenneth Mayhew, no less!! ! Some of our other students are still living around China Grove, which has grown to be quite a city now! ! Johnny Eagle is manager of the huge A P with Carl Smith still an A P slave! Billy Walker is an executive in the huge China Grove Textile Mill and up at Rowan we find Dickie Ayers now Super intendent of the Rowan Mills, but we are surprised to find out he has finally decided to do some loafing and is soon going to move to Hawaii and live a life of a rich Beach-Bum ! ! Barbara Deal is manager of a chain of Dept, stores, the Bobbie ' s Shops and her chief assistant is Betty Reaching. Again the scene changes and we are before a magnificent building. This is the World Famous China Grove Health Clinic. We are greeted by several of the staff, Lois Shill- inglaw is the head nurse, and some of the other nurses are Emma Wilson, Annie Lee Watson, and Doris Baker, Oh yes, there is also another nurse here but she lives in Char¬ lotte, Jean Ritchie The show continues and we find ourselves before the modern new Scottish Bank of China Grove and who is now its President! Bill Bradshaw, no less. With him are several other prominent town people: Elmer Corriher, who is now the nation ' s richest sand con¬ tractor, Jimmy Lyerly, the gentleman farmer, Jean Correll, the nation ' s foremost Gossip Reporter, having outdone her rival Louella Parson, Also there is Charles Bud Graeber, owner of the largest Ice and Fuel Company in the United States, and Johnny Morrison, who is the states No 1 Civil Engineer! The scene again changes and we are out in sunny California where we find Glenn Stire- walt. Architect, he knew that Geometry would come in somewhere! With his assistant R. D Weant, he is now working on plans for a new capital building! ! But Glenn isn ' t in California alone, for Ruby Linker and Evelyn Childers, with their families, live on lovely ranches there! Nancy Thompson is now living in the other sunny state, yes, she moved to Florida and all of her children have dark hair instead of her blonde color. Back up in Washington once again we find that pro player who has really made the grade, Norman Hosea Quantz, the Washington Red Skins No. 1 man! ! ! Also there is Jane Baker, formerly a big professional basketball player but now she is lady in her own sweet mansion, she caught a rich one! ! And still in Washington we find Faye Yost a sec¬ retary in the F. B„ I„ office and Mamie Alice Faggart another Government Clerk, But where are all the other girls who were former classmates of mine? Oh, here are some now and it seems they are all a Mrs, ! ! Sophie Upright! Wife of a Hawaiian business man and living in a lovely home by a blue lagoon, Eula Belle Stewart of course is now living in Landis and for a neighbor she has Verline Shepherd, Connie Sechler is married to the President of Catawba College and the leader of Salisbury society! ! ! ! Dot Hardin and Evelyn Fulcher decided that even though they are married they must be able to tell each other everything so they live in an apartment house and who but Joyce Taylor lives across the street, Ann Phillips and her husband Donald are one of the happiest couples around, but Lois Eaton and her Donald are very happy also. Golly, I was so interested in the show that I didn ' t realize that it is almost time for it to sign off but 1 was surprised when they announced that the only graduate they hadn ' t been able to interview was me! ! I had forgotten about not being on the show but they went on to say that I am a World-Traveler (professional bum) and at this time am spending a month somewhere in South America. Well, that somewhere is Rio! That is about all on Here They Are but I was so happy that dear old China Grove had been chosen for it was wonderful to see how swell the 1951 graduates had gotten along.
