Honbarger leaves his long list of jokes to R. J. Jones. Carolyn Kimball and Lois Wells leave their typist jobs to Colleen Overcash and Helen Hathcock. Edward Lee Mault wills his dependability to Howard Goodman. Relena Hooks leaves her position as basketball manager to anyone who can do as good a job as she has. Joe Sloop wills his bashfulness to David Parnell. Evelyn Allman leaves her bubble gum to Bette Wood. Pansy Ruth Safrit wills her studious ways to Arietta Michael. George Basinger leaves his altitude to Bobby Carter. Allie Mae Graham wills her ability to laugh to Tunny Dyson. R. C. White leaves his romantic ways to John Sifford. PROPHECY I am a great lover of the out-of-doors. Sitting here in the Library with nothing to do, maybe no one will miss me if I slip out for a walk in the woods back of the school. There alone in the quietude of the evening I might think of the thing that I wish to do with myself in the future. Wouldn’t it be terrible to get lost over here? All alone too! Let’s see now, the school building is that way. Or is it that way? I think it’s this way. Gee! I never saw so many trees. Wait! Yonder, on the hillside, isn’t that some sort of a house? I’ve never seen anything like it. It doesn’t even look like a house and yet,—well it must be. Are those radio transmitters all around the building? Well, I’m lost. I’ve got to get back to school. Maybe there’s someone there who can tell me which way to go. “Dr. Wonmug! It can’t be! But you aren’t real!” “Yes, my dear girl, won’t you come in and see my latest addition to the time machine? I can now send persons into the future as well as the past.” “Gosh, how exciting! Oh-er—Dr. Wonmung, could I go into the future? You see I’m—” “Never mind, young lady, I’m always looking for explorers. “There now, I think that’s about all the equipment you’ll need. Are you ready? O. K. step right up here. Hold your breath! Bingo! You’re gone!” What a ride and what a place! Gosh! I’m no longer in the woods, I’m in a city! Oh I know, this is China Grove. My how it has grown! Now for a lot of exploring. With the help of my magic carpet, I’ve got to find a lot of old classmates. As I walk down the street I see many new businesses. First I come upon a little shop—“Teecey’s Beauty Salon”—owned and operated by Montice Casper. Among her help I single one out I know as an old friend, Laverne Wilhelm. Across the street is Sloop’s Hotel, Joe Sloop, manager. Tonight there is to be a dance’ introducing James Bradshaw and his orchestra featuring George Basinger with the trumpet. Beside the hotel is a hat shop. On the neon sign I see “Lu’s Milliner.” Louise Stirewalt, with the help of her ever-faithful friend Allie Mae Graham, has become very famous with her new designs. I must see what has happened to the bank. Oh, Carl Haynes is now president of the firm, and working at the “Receipts” window is an out¬ standing employee, Pansy Ruth Safrit. As I walk down one of the boulevards, I see Mrs. Safrit (Betty Sue Kluttz) in her yard teaching little Suzie to walk. During a conversation I learn that Betty Jean Freeze is now married and traveling with her husband on a singing tour through the States. Mrs. Pauline Hall McDonald and Mrs. Mildred McDaniel Osborne are enjoying the peace and happiness of their little homes in the country. I think I recognize the girl coming down the street. Yes, it is Mary Lou Thompson. She and Lucille McGalliard have been abroad studying art and now have several paintings in the National Art Gallery. From her I learn that Mattie Lou Baker has given up her stage career to be¬ come the wife of Harold Ray Corriher. He needs a little blonde secretary since he owns the largest Sand Contracting business in the United States. From here I will go to the school building. I see two girls walking down the hall. Talking to them I find that more sports have been added to the school, and through the excellent coaching of Clara Jean Wall all the honors and trophies offered have been won. Relena Hooks, the out¬ standing commercial teacher, has developed some of the world’s fastest typists and speediest shorthand writers. The choir has reached its high¬ est achievements under the directorship of Joan Barger. They are having at school today as entertainment, “The Wackies” starring the two comedians of the year, Glenn Isenhour and Edward Lee Mault. Moving on up to Rowan Mills, I find still more changes. Since Evelyn Allman, the first woman superintendent, has taken over, the village has really grown and is now a very prominent city. Here living on Main Street is a Mrs. Bradshaw. Let me investigate further, so-o- it is Faye Barringer happily married to a great ball player. In Salisbury, I see Viola Koon is making a good nurse for some dentist, but Jean Lefler couldn’t settle down. Making a tour of the world, she is now in Mexico. No, she isn’t traveling alone; one of her pals, Anice Beeker, is accompanying her on this trip. Irene Miller is also married and making a very successful home in Salisbury. We have other teachers from our class, one Ollie Patterson teaching English at Lenoir-Rhyne, and the other Lois Wells teaching French at W. C. U. N. C. Going further north and stopping at the nation’s capitol, I see in the Senate Chamber, one of the Senators from N. C., Charles Shoe; and governor of the same state is none other than Frank Patterson. Two of the nation’s leading men. Stopping in Delaware, someone told me that Thelbert Shinn was vice-president of the DuPont Chemical Company and he has Martha Suddeth as Receptionist, and Elsie Hunter as Secretary. I go to a newsstand in New York and buy a “New York Times.” Glancing over the staff, I see the name of Johnnie McCombs, Assistant Editor. I go to her office and find she has as two of her reporters, a dashing red-head—Evelyn Karriker and a scooping blonde—Carolyn Kimball. Nothing escapes the careful eyes of this staff. I think I will take in the New York State Fair for amusement today. Hundreds of people are gathered around a side show over there. Let me see what’s going on. It is “The Wall of Death” featuring Burton Aldridge, motorcyclist. In the business section of town I see a skyscraper. Going into this magnificent building I see on a door, “G. W. Honbarger, Architect.” He is now visiting in France getting a contract for the new capitol building. One of his employees is a geometry classmate, Bernard Beaver. Dr. Freda Ward? Psychiatrist? She has established a very successful business and is rapidly becoming famous. Now for a trip to Boston. There is to be a thrilling game today. Red Sox versus the New York Yankees. Pitching for the Red Sox is R. C. White. No wonder he pitches “no hitters,” his wife, the former Clara Atwell, is sitting on the sidelines cheering for him. Manager of the Red Sox team is Bill Wood. But look who the Yankees have as shortstop, the top batter of the year, Jimmy Miller. The competition is so strong I can’t bear to watch the game. So I must go. Traveling to the west, I have to stop in Michigan. Here I find the Whitaker Aircraft Manufacturing Company. President—Jack Whitaker. His secretary seems familiar. Yes—it is Evelyn Shillinglaw. Bette Belk is an airline hostess for the Eastern Airlines. Coming back to the south through Tennessee, I come upon Carl Albright. He is now President of the T. V. A. Electrical Company. Now in Florida I have a glimpse of a little antique home owned by the Deals. Doris Simpson Deal is the lady of the house. Before I had a chance to see my own future, Dr. Wonmug brought me back into the present. He showed me the way to the school and I, being a such a daze, rushed off without thanking him; in such a hurry was I to tell my friends of these exciting adventures. JEAN ELLER, Prophetess Montice Casper and Laverene Wilhelm leave their close friend¬ ship to Hazel Hill and Clara Speight. Thelbert Shinn donates his generous supply of books to the Library. Jean Eller wills her friendly ways to Helen Winecoff. Frank Patterson leaves his love for sports to his brother Carl. Mattie Lou Baker wills her good looks to Martha Thornburg. Glenn Isenhour leaves his talkativeness to Junior Sides. Pauline McDonald and Mildred Osborne will their advice on marriage to anyone who is interested in this subject. Joan Barger leaves her best asset, neatness, to Eloise Deal. Ollie Patterson wills her basketball position to Sally Blalock. Bernard Beaver and Carl Haynes leave their buses to anyone who can drive. Betty Belk wills her “petiteness” to Cora Lee Freeze. Irene Miller leaves her quiet ways to Grace McKnight. Evelyn Shillinglaw wills her job in the office to Jane Eller. Betty Jean Freeze leaves her sincerity to Danny Ritchie. Clara Atwell wills her romantic ways to Bette Mault. Lucille McGalliard leaves her art ability to James Cress. Anice Beeker wills her curly hair to Nan Correll. Charles Shoe and Jimmy Miller leave their baseball positions to Kelly Barger and Roy Morris. Elsie Hunter wills her good grades in French to Doodle Smith. Betty Sue Kluttz leaves her pleasing personality to Peggy Bernhardt. Viola Koon and Jean Lefler will their friendly natures to Delores Mauldin and Allene Sechler. Doris Simpson leaves her nice clothes to Pattie Sue Barnhardt. Louise Stirewalt wills her modesty to Evelyn Lowder. Johnnie McCombs leaves her many talents to Doris Overcash. Martha Suddeth and Harold Ray Corriher will their Bookkeep¬ ing Sets to anyone who can do as well as they have. Evelyn Karriker leaves her friendly smile to Betty Lou Hogan. I, Jack Whitaker, having no particular talents and positively no possessions worth handing down, do leave to China Grove High School my love and best wishes. SIGNED: Jack E. Whitaker, Lawyer
