Chilton High School’ 1963 - 1964 Tigerette Editor Business Manager . . Soliciting Editor . . . . . . Barbara Voigt Vicki Schieble Dedication This year we are dedicating our annual to a well known man, who graduated from Chilton and is now a very successful scientist. His name is Professor Harry Steenbock. Professor Steenbock is now retired, but he has a laboratory at the University of Wisconsin as long as he wants to use it. When Professor Harry Steenbock of the University of Wisconsin discovered a process of investing foods with the properties of ultra-violet rays, or Vitamin D, without affecting the taste, he could have become a millionaire. However, he refused to patent the process in his own name. The wise professor renounced all personal profit from the discovery and assigned it to a trust, the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, in order that the proceeds might go to further scientific research. When he was asked why he gave away a fortune, he refused, at first, to answer. On being pressed he said, The money would do me little, if any, good. What use is money personally to an individual if he receives enough to provide for the reasonable needs of himself and his family? During the years, many outstanding contributions to human knowledge and health have been made by Wisconsin biochemists. They include the discovery by Harry Steenbock that ultra-violet irradiation will increase the Vitamin D content of milk and the discovery of Conrad A. Harry Steenbock trapped the sun by discovering an inexpensive method for the artificial irradiation of foodstuffs to create Vitamin D--the sunshine vitamin. With this discovery he enabled mankind to end the great scourge of rickets and make the arms and legs of children throughout the world straight and strong, keep their backs erect, and their bones and teeth healthy and normal. Back in 1950 a poll was taken in our state to give the people an opportunity to name the ten greatest living Wisconsin residents. Harry Steenbock was named by the people to that honored list--the only University of Wisconsin staff member to be chosen. More than money and fame has come to Dr. Steenbock. He has honorary degrees from his alma mater, from Lawrence College. Yale University, and the University of Berlin. In 1931 he was official delegate of the U.S. at the International Conference on Vitamin Standardization. In 1940 the National Association of Manufacturers honored Dr. Steenbock for his work in creating jobs and improving the American standard of living. No doubt the good professor found, as we too might find, that life’s deepest satisfactions come in giving and in serving, not in getting and in bei ng served. You, as a member of the graduating class of 1964, will soon be passing an important milestone in your life. From your comparatively sheltered and protected existence you will emerge into a world where you must become self-sufficient and independent. You will be called upon to solve problems and make wise decisions involving not only yourself personally but the society in which you live. This will require the utmost knowledge, imagination, courage, faith and determination. Whether you continue your formal education or not, you must strive to improve your general proficiency. Of even greater importance is to develop ethical, spiritual and moral values so necessary to meet the challenge of the future. It is your duty and obligation to make the most of your talents and abilities so that you may make your contribution to freedom, human welfare and good government. If our great nation is to endure and thrive it can only be on the basis of convictions and beliefs so strong that they lift us right out of ourselves and cause us to live for some purpose nobler and better than ourselves. It is my hope that during the past four years we may have helped lay the foundation for your continued intellectual and ethical growth and development. Best wishes and good luck. A famous man once said, No true success is ever enjoyed without sacrifice and effort. What costs nothing amounts to nothing. Teachers are continually searching for ways to encourage more of their students to make more sacrifice and effort in order that their education will be more successful. Too many students are content merely to use a minimum amount of effort to earn a diploma. A diploma is only a piece of paper and if it costs nothing in the way of effort and sacrifice, that is what it is worth. More students should be aware of the fact that learning is an active process. Growth and development of any skills take place only when they are exercised. Letting teachers or classmates do all the hard work is the best way to make certain that the education which costs little in effort and sacrifice is worth very little. Principal, E. J. People Called Teachers Between the innocence of infancy and the dignity of maturity our children fall under the influence of a group of people called teachers. Teachers come in assorted sizes, weights, and colors. They have various interests, hobbies, religions, and beliefs, but they share one creed: to help each child reach the highest possible degree of personal development. A teacher is a composite. She must have the energy of a harnessed volcano, the efficiency of an adaing machine, the memory of an elephant, the understanding of a psychiatrist, the wisdom of Solomon, the tenacity of a spider, the patience of a turtle trying to cross the freeway in rush-hour traffic, the decisiveness of a general, the diplomacy of an ambassador, and the financial acumen of a Wall Street wizard. She must remember always that she teaches by word but mostly by p recept. A teacher may possess beauty or skill, but mostly she must possess love--a deep abiding love of, and respect for, children individually and en masse. She must love your little girl, who has the song of a bird, the squeal of a pig, the stubbornness of a mule, the antics of a monkey, the spryness of a grasshopper, the curiosity of a cat. the slyness of a fox, and the mysterious mind of a woman. A teacher is truth with chalk in its hair, beauty with an aching back, wisdom searching for bubble gum, the hope of the future with papers to grade. For this you pay her more than the garbage man, but less than the garage mechanic: more than the grocery clerk but less than the postman; more than the ditchdigger but less than the trucker. The most amazing thing about a teacher is that she wouldn't trade jobs with anyone she knows. She likes to teach.................................THIS DAY -8- [ L SSES Badger Boys Jim Vogel, Tom Fox D.A.R. Behind this final day were weeks of frantic preparation and fear of not being finished in time for the big event. At the sound of a gong at 10:30, a hush fell over the crowd - - it was time for the coronation. King Matt Lavey crowned Sharon Halbach queen of Sayonara under the huge pagoda. The court of honor was presented at this time also. It consisted of Chris Bloomer and Jim Vogel, Sandy Lunde and Tom Fox, Laurie Moehrke and Charles Schneider. Betty Uhlenbrauck and John Holst, and Sharon Hoerth and Tom Dhein. At twelve-thirty the couples left Sayonara” and attended a post-prom party at the Altona in New Holstein. Our Foreign Exchange Program Through the determination, enthusiasm, and hard work of many people, a local chapter of the American Field Service was born in Chilton in the spring of 1963. A student chapter was organized at this time also. These two clilbs work together with the American Field Service headquarters in New York City. The purpose of these organizations is to promote good will and understanding among the peoples of the world by giving foreign students an opportunity to study in American schools and American teenagers a chance to live with families in another country. The primary purpose of the student chapter is twofold. Throughout the year we raise money in various ways to bring a foreign student to our school. When he arrives we try to make him feel welcome and help acquaint him with our school life. The student officers are: president, Bette Uhlenbrauck; vice-president. Steve Larson; secretary, Jeanne Hoffmann; co-treasurers, Tom Fox and Tom Hilbert. Our first foreign exchange student is Cherdsak Choomnoon, from N a k o r n ra j s i m a , Thailand. - 42 - FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Gloria Gasch, Pat Larson, Ann Gordon, Neil Wettstein SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Kathy Koehler, Susan Nicolay, Bob Miller, Mike Keuler First Semester Student Officers JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Shirley Miller, Vern Gasch, Dick Koehler STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS Shirley Miller, Lynn Hertel, Dick Koehler, Bob Miller - 43 - ROW ONE: R. The Future Farmers of America or the F.F.A. as they are better known, are not only preparing boys for future farming, but they are also training boys in all the agricultural fields of tomorrow. Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, living to serve , this is the meaningful motto which guilds the F.F.A. to prosperity. The Future Farmers of America exists today Because of the cooperation and desire of the farm boys. These boys have a national organization of their own in which they may secure practical business experience, act as their own instructors, and enjoy the fellowship of one another. The F.F.A. is self-supporting. Operating nationally on ten cents a year member dues, it has been in good financial shape since its origin. The F.F. A. members who were chosen as the leaders for the 1963-1964 school year were: President, Dave Nisler; Vice-President, Don Riemer; Re- porter, Dave Daun; Treasurer, Mike Schmitz; Sentinel, Bob Cullen; and Secretary, Jim Kolbe. These boys under the fine supervision of Mr. Pautz, have haa another worthwhile year. They entered a fine float in the Homecoming Parade which proudly claimed the third place prize. - 44 - OFFICERS SEATED: D. Riemer, D. Nisler, J. Kolbe OFFICERS STANDING: M. Schmitz, D. Daun. There are many things which make up a future homemaker besides the ability to cook and sew. To be active in the organization you must attend the meetings and participate in the activities sponsored by the organization. Some of these activities are the selling of cocoa at football games, working on the Homecoming float, working on degrees, and sponsoring a style show. At the Banquet in April, awards were presented for outstanding work done during the year. Some of the purposes of the organization are . . . to promote a growing appreciation of homemaking, to emphasize the importance of worthy home membership, to promote international goodwill, to further interest in home economics, and to provide wholesome individual and group recreation. All of the F.H.A. members work hard to prove that they can manage a successful home. Whenever they encounter problems, Mrs. Werblow, the advisor, is always willing to help them solve them. All in all the future homemakers can look back on a successful year. ROW ONE: B. Gerner, L. Moehrke, C. Roewer, K. Allison, K. Kuehnl, M Goeser, S. Lenz, C. Kramer, J. Juckem, J. Kopf, B Fye, W. The Vocal Aspect Of Music In Chilton High The vocal department at C.H.S. this year is bigger and better than it ever was before. In both Mixed Chorus and Girls Glee Club, many old members were back to fill their standard place. Yet, there was a surprizing amount of new members eager to find out how they, in future months, would help contribute to the achievements in either Girls Glee Club or Mixed Chorus. At the first rehearsal, all the students were told that singing and being a part of a vocal group does not only require physical effort but mental effort also. This sounded quite strange. Yet, as the director, Mr. Gilow, had the students become familiar with more songs they found out that there was a considerable amount of mental effort put towards singing. The students soon found out that singing in chorus and glee club was no holiday. The point system again was being used. A member can obtain a certain number of points by singing a solo or being in an ensemble in front of an audience. Points also were awarded for singing in church choirs, attending concerts, or accompanying certain groups. At the end of the year, special recognition was given to those who accumulated the most points. Yet, the members found out all the hard work and effort paid off at the spring and Christmas concerts where the groups had a chance to perform in front of an audience. Exchange concerts also proved to be very successful this year. - 53 - ROW ONE: A. Koehler, C. Walker, N. Peik, S. Gasch, S. Lunde, M. Hume, B. Uhlenbrauck, J. Hoffmann, ROW TWO: B. Lau, L. Our Honored Students The new members of the National Honor Society are ...the audience anxiously waited for the teachers to select the worthy new members. . in Junior and Senior students there fluttered many a heart, each waiting hopefully as the teachers came from the stage... eighteen would be chosen this year... now here was their decision... Arleen Koehler, Carroll Walker, Nancy Peik, Sandy Gasch, Sandy Lunde, Mary Jo Hume, Bette Uhlenbrauck, Jeanne Hoffmann, Beverly Lau, Laurie Moehrke, Mary Lou Meyer, Jim Vogel, Linda Gordon, Steve Freiburger, Gretchen Schmeider, Margaret Nelson, Nancy Plappert, Diane Woelfel. The happy recipients of this distinction were led to the stage and there their sponsor pinned the national insignia of the National Honor Society on them. On Awards Day, May, 1963, the Chilton High School faculty announced their decision as to the selection of the Honor Society. The members were chosen by a secret vote of the faculty on the basis of character, scholarship, citizenship, and service---the ideals of the National Honor Society. Every year new members are added from all the high schools in the United States. These students are proud members of a nation-wide society of young people who have achieved success in their high school careers. A mutual respect for fellow members is prevalent among its privileged members. On Awards Day 1964, several Chilton High School students will become new members of the National Honor Society. Again the teachers will select those whom they feel will fill the requirements of a good-all around student, an asset to any high school in the United States. - 54 - The Heart Hop held on February 8th was again a success. Homecoming—1963 One of the most exciting times in our year and also one that presents great time and effort, is the Homecoming Season. Each individual has the opportunity to take active part in this event . . . the class and organizations floats, the planning and decorating for the dance, and the selecting of the queen. This year as usual, the field was the scene of great excitement. Mr. Hoffman and his band, following the theme of Dr. Ben Crazy, put on a memorable show for all. The dance decorations were superb. The Committee headed by Bette Uhlenbrauck, did an outstanding job. They revolved their decorations around the theme of Peter Pan. The climax of the evening was the coronation of the queen, Pat Reiser. The members of her court were: Bette Uhlenbrauck, Jeanne Hoffmann, Audrey Hertel, and Sharon Hoerth. This evening proved to be a complete success. It will remain in our minds as a time worth remembering. - 56 - BOTTOM: A snap shot of the cheerleaders in the Homecoming Parade. ROW ONE: S. Miller, K. Promotes Fellowship And Fairplay The girls Athletic Association is an organization for all girls interested in athletics. The purpose of this club is to promote teamwork, good sportsman-ship and fair play among all the girls who are interested. During recent years G.A.A. was held at noon hour; however, due to the cut of our lunch program this year, it was held on Tuesday evenings. Because of this obstacle not quite as many girls were able to join. The first sport of the year was badminton, followed by basketball and volleyball. In the spring of the year tennis and softball were played. Sport-heads were elected to arrange the playing schedule of each sport. They were assisted by the physical education teacher and advisor, Miss Erman. On awards day, Miss Erman, presents the members who had participated in three or more sports their certificates, letters, or pins; depending upon the number of years the person has belonged to the organization. - 61 - ROW ONE: D. JOSEPH SCHLAEFFER Compliments of LEN GRIEBER, HERFF JONES REPRESENTATIVE BRUCKNER’S STANDARD STATION Madison, Wisconsin 80- SENIOR HISTORY 1964: In September of 1960, 89 freshmen entered the halls of Chilton High School. We chose Steve Larson as our first president. He was assisted by Phyllis Schneider, vice-president; Laurie Moehrke, secretary; and Tom Fox, treasurer. Advising us throughout the year were Mr. Hoffman and Mrs. Eichhorst. After much thought, we chose as our class float theme We’ll Snow 'Em Under. We had a lot of fun building it. Cheering for our freshmen team were: Audrey Hertel, Sandra Lunde, Jeanne Hoffmann, and Sharon Hoerth. A number of our boys participated in sports. Our freshmen basketball team had a record of 0 wins and 10 losses. Fourteen of our class members participated in forensics. Laurie Moehrke represented our class at the District contest. In the school play, Lock, Stock, and Lipstick , Sharon Halaach gave a fine performance. We chose Jeff Ware to lead us second semester. Other officers were Sandra Lunde, Charles Schneider, and Jeanne Hoffmann. As sophomores we chose Jeanne Hoffmann as our president with Chris Bloomer, Laurie Moehrke, and Sandra Lunde as her fellow officers. Mrs. Eichhorst and Mr. Hoffmann again advised us. Sandra Lunde cheered for Varsity and Jeanne Hoffmann cheered at Junior Varsity basketball games. Homecoming came fast. We entered our second float and even though we didn't win a prize, we had a lot of fun and were proud of it. Our theme was No Sweat, We'll Roll To Victory. A large number of our boys took part in sports during the second year. Jim Vogel and Tom Dhein had the honor of playing on the Varsity basketball team. Paul Sturm, Jeff Ware, and David Humke were sophomore members of the golf team. In Forensics competition Sandra Lunde represented our class at the State contest in Madison. Jeanne Hoffman and Steve Freiburger represented our class at the District Meet. As second semester approached we again chose class officers. They were: Jim Vogel, president; Tom Dhein, vice-president; Mary Lou Meyer, secretary; and Jeff Ware, treasurer. The highlight of our sophomore year was the Sweetheart Hop. Early in February, the boys of the class chose five girls who composed the court of honor. They were: Mary Lou Meyer, Phyllis Schneider, Jeanne Hoffmann, Sandra Lunde, and Judy Halbach. By popular vote of the class Mary Lou Meyer was chosen to reign as queen. The girls chose as their escorts Jim Hlaban, Paul Sturm. Tom Dhein, Tom Fox, and Mark Depies respective- iy- We entered our junior year very proud because now we were upperclassmen. We chose Mike Allison as our President. Joyce Pagel, Laurie Moehrke, and Sharon Hoerth held the offices of vice-president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. Mrs. Eichhorst and Mr. Schuh served as advisors. Sandra Lunde and Jeanne Hoffmann were chosen as members of the Varsity cheering squad while Sharon Hoerth served on the Junior Varsity squad. Weeks before Homecoming we started work on our float. Proudly we entered our masterpiece of a huge blue and white paper violin, so large it required a semi-truck flat-bed trailer to transport. It bore the theme Chilton Won't Fiddle Around. Triumphantly we accepted first place ana cheered our team on to victory. The most important class elections were held the second semester. We chose Matt Lavey as president. With this honor came another--that of being our Prom King. Other officers were: vice-president, Dave Nisler; secretary, Bette Uhlenbrauck; and treasurer, Betty Gruber. May 3 was set aside for our Junior Prom. The five boys voted to be on the court of honor were: Jim Vogel, John Host, Tom Dhein, Charles Schneider, and Tom Fox. Matt Lavey chose as his queen, Sharon Halbach. The five boys chose as their dates Chris Bloomer, Bette Uhlenbrauck, Sharon Hoerth, Laurie Moehrke represented our class on the Snow Ball Court. At the Athletic Banquet, Dave Nisler and Matt Lavey were named co-captains for the 1963 football season. Early in spring, the faculty chose Tom Fox and Jim Vogel as the two Badger boys from Chilton High School to attend sessions at Ripon during the summer of 1963. In Forensic competition Sandra Lunde, Dorothy Sabel, Steve Freiburger, and Sharon Halbach earned nonors at the State Contest in Madison. Jeanne Hoffmann represented us at the District Meet in Oshkosh. On Awards Day nine of our class members were named to the National Honor Society. They were: Mary Jo Hume, Mary Lou Meyer, Bette Uhlenbrauck, Jim Vogel, and Steve Freiburger. September 1963 brought the beginning of the end. We started the vear with the usual class elections. The results were: Dave Nisler, president; Charles Schneider, vice-president; Mary Jo Hume, secretary; and Don Ziegelbauer, treasurer. For our last Homecoming we titled our float Here's A Toast To Victory! The senior football players chose as queen candidates, Jeanne Hoffmann, Bette Uhlenbrauck, Sharon Hoerth, Audrey Hertel, and Pat Reiser. They, in turn, chose Jeff Ware, Dave Nisler, Matt Lavey, Mark Depies, and LeRoy Roehrig as their escorts. At the halftime ceremonies on the evening of October 11, Pat Reiser was crowned queen of the 1963 Homecoming. This year we welcomed a new student into our class, Cherd Choomnoon from Thailand. He was our first foreign exchange student. We all enjoyed getting to know him. Jeanne Hoffmann and Tom Dhein were elected flag raisers for the 1963-64 school year. Bette Uhlenbrauck was named recipient of the DAR Good Citizen Award. Sandra Lunde won the Betty Crocker Homemaker Award. On the Varsity cheering squad were Sandra Lunde, Jeanne Hoffmann, and Sharon Hoerth. Our newspaper and annual staff were well-run by members of our class. Carroll Walker served as editor of the Hillcrest, while Darla Mertz carried out editing duties of the Tigerette. Several other class members served as assistant editors to these girls. Serving at Student Council officers were: Mary Jo Hume, Sharon Halbach, and LeRoy Roehrig. Dave Nisler, Matt Lavey, and Tom Dhein were selected as All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference football players. Tom Dhein was named to the 1963 United Press International Coaches All-State third team. The football team finished in second place in conference play with an 8-1 record. The basketball team ended the season with a 5-8 record. Jim Vogel ranked third for scoring honors in the conference. Seniors who received one or more letters throughout their high school years were: Tom Fox, Jim Hlaban, Jeff Ware, Jim Vogel, Tom Dhein, Steve Larson, Mike Wagner, Matt Lavey, Dave Nisler, Steve Freiburger, Dave Humke, Mike Schmitz, Mark Depies, John Holst, and LeRoy Roehrig. A number of our boys set school records in track. Tom Fox held the record in the pole vault. Steve Larson claimed the top spot for the mile. Tom Dhein held school records in the 440 yard dash, 220 yard dash, broad jump, 880 relay, and the Sprint Medley. Tom Dhein also set a State record in the 440 yard dash, Class B, with a time of 49. 6 seconds. Thus ended our four years of work, study, fun, and activities at Chilton High School.
