Arvie W. Gordon Superintendent Administration Dear Seniors, Within a few weeks the Class of '59 will have completed four years of high school education. What you have accomplished in that short span of years depends largely upon the degree of effort put forth cooperatively by you and your instructors. It has been our aim to instill a spirit of inquisitiveness in each of you—a desire to search out the truth through orderly and reflective thinking. Many of the facts you have learned will soon be forgotten and others may prove to be of little practical value but if you have achieved some small measure of success in learning how to think critically for yourselves then your efforts and ours have not been in vain. In these past years you have enjoyed the advantages of the greatest educational system in the world today—a democratic system based on principles of equality of opportunity and human dignity. You have an obligation to your country to protect that system against the totalitarian philosophies that threaten it. Let your lives and accomplishments shine as living proof of the superiority of our democratic ideals. Good luck, A. W. Gordon Dear Seniors, I would like to use a quotation which Theodore Roosevelt made in 1891 as a basis for these remarks because I believe it applies even more strongly to the present day situation. He said, Our country calls not for a life of ease, but for a life of strenuous endeavor. The twentieth century looms before us big with the fate of many nations. If we stand idly by, if we seek merely swollen, slothful ease, and ignoble peace, if we shrink from the hard contests where men must win at hazard of their lives and at the risk of all they hold dear, then the bolder and stronger peoples will pass us by and will win for themselves the domination of the world. Among the members of our student body are to be found examples of those who do seek slothful ease. None of these has gained a great deal from being in school. They have continually denied themselves opportunity to display the self-discipline that should be expected from maturing young people. If the future of our country were to be left in the hands of these future citizens, there would be much to fear. Fortunately, however, there are also among the members of the student body of Chilton High School, many young people who do pursue a life of strenuous endeavor. These are the young people who have contributed so much to the highly successful school activities of the past year. They have put a great deal of hard work into their efforts and, as a result, have gotten a lot out of school. The leadership and direction of student affairs has been in their hands and they have not shrunk from the strenuous efforts needed to do the job well. It is to be expected that those who have worked hard and achieved much will continue to be the same kind of citizen in the future and will be the good leaders they have been in their years in school. We hope that those who have shirked their responsibilities will begin to follow the example of strenuous endeavors of the more successful students to insure more success for themselves. Earl J. Anderson Principal Best wishes, E. J. Anderson
