Chi Io cco Panorama CH1LOCC0 INDIAN INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL (a5.tw,as originally named) Was established in 1884- On the beaut'll qreen prairie lands of Centra | Oklahoma. James HI. Haworth was the first superintendent of this insti- tution. During its early years the School's lands produced the principal crops of wheat corn, oats, broom Corn, Sorghum, millet, alfalfa,anc) prairie hay. Large orchards and vineyards yielded abundant crops of fruit. Nur- series and gardens also yielded fine vegetables and afforded students Knowledge od sKill n the field of agricultures . Q one time the dairy produced over 10,000 gallons of milK' each cjuarter year fVmcipal courses of instruction and pract cal experiences in such Subjects as shoe ma King , shoe repair, leather crafts man ship, dairying , stocK- raising that included fine poultry, hogs, cattle, horses, and sheep tfone time over lOOO head of Cattle roanned the lush green pastures of the allotted for the purpose of educating Indian youths, Other vocations included yuarrying, automobile nnechqnics , blacKsmitHmy (.the forerunner of modern welding courses), dry cleaning and laundry operator} nursing , Cqfc operation, printing , plumbing Cind Steamtitting , dressmaKing} broom rnqKina , electrical engi neering, Carpentry and allied forms of woodwor (such as cabinetry)) house Keeping, tailoring, pamfiny and pQperhqngmg,along with other vocational pursuits. Streamlined modern living with advances in technology hqs eliminated many of these Vocational pursuits from the School Curricula. Today, aca- demic. Subjects are emphasized, with the aim of preparing today's Indian uoath for a modern way of life. Heavy egujpment operations,along with welding, agricultural pursuits, dry cleaning, auromobi le mechanics , automotive body repair electrical Courses, Woodworking, printing, and otter vocational Subjects vie for a place alongside Such academic Subjects 7
