We, the 1969-1970 annual staff, have endeavored to capture the highlights of the 1969-1970 school year and present them in a memorable and rewarding fashion. We extend our thanks to Mr. Calvin Cowen and Mr. Carriasco McGilbra for taking group pictures for our annual. We also wish to thank Zack Slim for the fine artwork on the cover. We sincerely wish the graduating sen- iors of 1970 the very best in the future. We ask that the undergraduates please keep the traditions of Chilocco alive. May we always remember and be proud of our al- ma mater. DEDICATION We, the seniors of 1970, willingly ded- icate the 1970 Chiloccoan to Mrs. Carolyn Jamison in honor of her service to the stu- dents of Chilocco. Mrs. Jamison worked three and a half years at Chilocco as a din- ing room food service worker, and she has recently become a member of the Boys’ Guidance Personnel at the New Dorm. Her principle interests are sewing, watching television and traveling. She likes working with the students and knows Chilocco is a very good school. a ADMINISTRATION Dear Students: The Graduates of 1970 have many opportunities open to them and a high school education is more important now than it has ever been before. Graduation from high school shows a genuine desire by the student to succeed in life, and it makes possible a choice of the opportunity which best suits the grad- uate whether it is further training or em- ployment. Those of you who still have a year or more before graduation should take courage from knowing that soon you too will be completing high school. This is an achievement for which you will receive many rewards. It is my sincere belief that your class work and your participation in school activities can enable you to be successful in the post high school program you choose for yourself. Clarence W. Winston, Principal This has been an enjoyable year for me and my family here at Chiloeco. We are pleased with the cooperative spirit of the staff and students. May I congratulate the graduating senior class members for their achieve- ments during their high school years 1 sincerely hope you will reach each of your personal goals. I know that many of you will realize life experiences beyond your fondest dreams. My best wishes go with you. I hope the students who return to Chiloeco and all the new students will work very hard toward making good high school records There are many ways we can improve Chiloeco as a school. This will be our aim for next year and years to come. Daniel E. Students of Mr. Karl Stone are learning the short method of fractions. The students facing the camera (L-R); George Nash and Dale Marceau. Verla Jackson is learning to become a professional typist . . . a-a-a-b-b-b. 81 These students are presenting the dramatic production of “The Navajo Wedding.” (L-R); Elmer Cur- ley. Warren Bell. Walter Pacheco (standing), Karen Williams, Marcella Barney, Laura Howell and Bennie Long. Agnes Kameroff and Connie Stevens are trying to get blood from their fingers for a “blood type” experiment. Connie seems to be saying, “I’d rath- er try to get blood from a turnip!” Students in the Reading Workshop arfe learning prefix usage through the aid of an opaque pro- jector. 82 It just needs to be one millimeter longer,” thinks Johnny Descheny as he does a chemistry assign- ment. Who’s this that’s trying’to become an Orchestra- Professor? Why, it’s a boy from Alaska named Dennis Wasuli. 'Edison Begay, your clothes will be a classic ex- ample of Modern Art by the time you finish ’ thinks Mr. C. Leon, art teacher as he tries to help Edison with an assignment. Thomasine Bad Bear must really be a good teach- er. Look how these students are paying attention to her, isn’t that nice. 83 Homemaker of Tomorrow 84 Martha Clara Evon “Are you sure you know what you’re doing?’’ Mrs. Jarrett seems to he saying to Sophie Nikolai. “Are you girls taking it all down?” asks Miss Janie Hazaleus. Students facing the camera. (L-R); Elena Nelson and Rosa Downey. “How do you make a button hole?” Sharon Smith says to Mrs. Elaine Clark. Seems like Esther Tunutmuak is more interested in the cameraman than in learning to make a dress. Mrs. Dorothy Jarrett, home economics teach- er, might as well give up. 85 (L-R); Terry Lynn Ketcherside, Lynda Hawk. Connie Stevens and Claudia Frank are dreaming of a white Christmas while making decorations for their Home Economics classroom. Mrs. Elizabeth Sweeney’s Home Art class is making Christmas decorations. The girls are (L-R)- Elsie M. Larson. Ruth Jacob, Mary McCarty, Deanne Preacher. Ernestine Doyebi, Carolyn McCurtain.’ Mrs. Elizabeth Sweeney and Stella Vielle. 86 •Now be careful with that machine. Don’t let it cut your fingers,” Polly Sheldon (right) seems to be saying as she expertly demonstrates the proper way to cut the ham to her junior classmate, Lucy Phillip. Shown above is Gloria Johnson participating in the Home Economics style show. She is modeling a dress which she made while Linda Dixon narrates the program. 87 Trades Sweetheart 88 Louise LeClair WELDING This sure beats a hand saw,” Tom Cly seems to be saying while using the power hack saw in the welding shop. PRACTICAL ARTS WOOD “Look what I have just finished making,” says George Brockie. “What is it?, “It’s a bowl!’ 89 Mr. Calvin Cowen, drafting instructor, is shown here helping Ponca Warrior who is building a model home. David Toledo is shown in background drawing plans for his home. These hardworking Dry Cleaners—Delbert Penn, Margaret Howard and Phyllis Blueyes, in the background—are posing for the camera while they should be working. Ella Connie King is pre-spotting a jacket with the help of Phyllis Blueyes while working in the Dry Cleaning Shop. 90 These boys often have some shocking experiences while working in the Electricity Shop. (L-R); Sam- my Lewis, Richard Suvlu and Melford Wesley. “A twist here and turn there and . . . opps, this’ll never be the same,” says Kenneth Oscar while working on an engine in the Auto Mechanics Shop. “Who would have thought that just one little mouse could cause all that squeaking,” says Roger Benally 91 What is John Mojin doing here in the Electricity Shop, testing a light or making an electric motor? Larry Brown, shown here in the Body and Fender Shop, tries a little metal conditioner on some lucky person’s car. Wesley O. Seyler really is filing away at that trans- former in the Electricity Shop. It’ll probably work like a charm when he is finished. 92 Indian School Journal Editor 93 Irene Smith I wonder who is doing the posing for this picture in the 1969 Spring Livestock Show, the steers or Edison Begay, Leroy Monte, and John Peterson. r fry- 4| Leonard Andrews is pictured here showing his steer during the 1969 Spring Livestock Show. “Don’t worry my little foal. You’ll be big like me one of these days.” That’s directly from the horse’s mouth. 94 Displaying their sheep in the 1969 Spring Live- stock Show are (L-R); George Malemute, Frank- lin Russell and Floyd Montoya. Leslie Nez is preparing his steer for the May 7 1970, Spring Livestock Show. 95 The natives seem to be a little restless at the 1969 Spring Livestock Show, or is it us? Solomon Bowman and Elmer Curley are showing their steers in the 1969 Spring Livestock Show. Ivan Bell seems to be saying, “Let’s quit horsing around and get this show on the road.' Pull Push ! That’s what Richard Goggleye and Darrell Pooyouma seems to be doing while working with one of the machines in Heavy Equipment. When all else fails, try pushing it. At least that seems to be the philosphy of the Post Grads in Heavy Equipment. Aggie boys are fighting a fire during a winter spell. Learning to use the fire fighting equipment is an important objective. Joseph Honvumptuva knows there’s a sqeak in there somewhere, but he just can’t seem to find it. Aggie students, Clifford Martin and Thompson Tsosie, pose with their prize steers at the 1969 Spring Livestock Show. 98 PERSONNEL Superintendent's Office Daniel E. Sahmaunt Donald A.
