CHILOCCO INDIAN SCHOOL CHILOCCO, OKLAHOMA 1967-68 STUDENT UNION THE OLD AND THE NEW Bea Johnson Our ancestors lived in wigwams made of animal skin, They had a hard way of life, the people then. And yet, they had the blessing of the earth and the sun, Making them happy when the day’s work was done. Then, the white man came and took our land away. Our freedom and peace vanished with the com- ing day. We taught the white man the laws of nature and earth, And they in turn, taught us the laws of ambit- tion and mirth. • , With this new knowledge we learned to build and progress. We felt the infinite joy and glory of success. We discovered it takes courage and ambition to build a city, And that a civilization can’t be built on self- pity. So, that is how it came to be, That Chilocco was founded in 1883. Yesterday, it was only a building or two. On the Oklahoma prairies under skies of blue. Today, it has expanded and is a busy place. It houses and teaches 92 tribes of the Indian race. Yesterday, its teachers and materials were small, But today, hundreds of people will answer the call. But neither do the students neglect their fun, In the evening they meet at the new Student Union. It has been a beloved part of Chilocco since 1965, And to conserve its safety and neatness, the students strive. But apart from their work and their socializ- ing, The students of Chilocco are busy realizin, That soon they will hear fate and destiny beck- oning. And it will be time to stand tall and hear the world’s reckoning. They will soon go forth and meet the world’s demands. Perhaps cross the oceans and visit many lands. Yes, Chilocco is striving to build a nation of strong women and men. So that they may work and progress and face the world with a grin. Published by Chilocco Press FOREWORD We, the members of the Annual Staff, have end- eavored to consolidate all of our happiest and most memorable events into the 1968 Chiloccoan. We extend our special thanks to James Etsitty for the fine artwork on the cover and division pages. We do sincerely wish the very best for each and. every graduating senior of 1968. Chilocco has been a major contributing factor and a great benfit to us. We hope the years spent here have produced the key to unlock the “Golden Door to Success”, making each of us self-sufficient, independent per- sons. To the undergraduates, we ask you to please pre- serve the traditions of Chilocco so dear to our hearts. Romania Helton, Editor DEDICATION In 1965, the swank, modern building which nestles in the southwest corner of the renowed Chilocco campus, was completed. After much thought and architectural planning, the afore-mentioned building, better known as the “New Dorm,” has emerged, as of yet, the most modern and colorful structure here. Its conveniences in- clude an intercommunication system, central air-conditioning and pool room. You must agree that Chilocco’s sophomore, junior, and senior boys live in the utmost comfort and unsur- passed luxury. Therefore, we, the Senior class of 1968, willingly dedicate to the “New Dorm,” the 1968 Chiloccoan. Romania Helton, Editor 2 ADMINISTRATION Dear Students: It is a pleasure and privilege to write a greeting for the Chiloccoan. The 1967-68 school year has been one of our better years. About 1100 high school American Indian and Native Alaskan boys and girls have taken advantage of the opportunities offered at Chilocco. Most of you have real- ized many successes where previously you had had few. These successes, we believe, should encourage you and give you prac- tical experience in your adult life toward accomplishing your individual goals. On benalf of the faculty and myself, we take this opportunity to wish you continu- ed success and happiness in your adult life. Leon Wall, Superintendent Graduation from high school is more im- portant today than it has ever been at any time in the past. This is an opening of opportunities to all young people who have the desire to go forward in new and interesting achievements. You who are graduating this year are ’to be commended for reaching this important point in your educational program. Grad- uation opens many avenues to you for more training and greater service. It chal- lenges you to exert effort and show courage which can bring many rewards.; To the students who are looking forward to the time when you too, will complete your high school program, may we extend our encouragement and our appreciation for the school work you are now doing. We feel sure the social and academic act- ivities you can engage in at Chilocco will enable you to continue your education and help you adjust to the needs of the future. Clarence W. Winfield. Caroline McCurtain will surely be a skill- ed mathematician after a few sessions Mrs. Barse, a workshop teacher, is shown assisting a stu with Mrs. Vann. dent with his reading lesson. 72 EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES PLAY DAY Joe Goudy and the other two riders seem to be having more fun than a barrel of monkeys. I won- der about Alex, Melvin and Truman....... Although Play Day was new and different, Fresh- men enjoyed it very much. Here they are playing the over and under” relay. Gliding on winged feet are Karen Edmonds, Betty LongtimeSleeping, Verna Ahhaitty and Elizabeth Chase who are engaged in the 220 yard relay race. We're never short on sprinters on Play Day. Huff, ing and puffing to reach that winning line are the participants of the 220 yard relay. Where are these boys going in such a hurry? The Sack Races are another exciting event to watch. With unbiased opinion, pick one of the boys as winner. Play Day usually brings stiff competition and a strong desire to win. Piggy-back racing is a fav- orite sport on that special day. 74 WATERMELON SOCIAL Heading the employee’s reception line is Dr. Leon Wall. But, wait! What’s wrong with Sarah Begay? Is she afraid to shake hands with the employees? Sarah, you might not get a watermelon.... Mr. and Mrs. Erie Haring seem to be scan- ning the watermelons in hopes of finding an extra large one. Possibly, they are what we would call “chow hounds” via Chiloc- co terminology. Fred Ticeahkie, who has a piece of water- melon, seems to be waiting for another one. Could it be for his girl friend? 75 CHILOCCO CHOIR OFFICERS Front row, Sandra Charles, Librarian; Linda Louie, co-robe chairman. Second row, Christine Nauni, Secretary; Jeannie Begaye, Reporter. AUTO MECHANICS Johnson Tsosie and Richard Yazzie are checking the timing on this car, but “don’t ask me what is meant by timing.” 90 SHOE REPAIR AND LEATHERCRAFT Ben Cly is working diligently while Mr. Vaught, instructor, stands by observing. Sure hope Ben leaves some leather for walking purposes. PAINTING Mr. Logsdon needs a pair of shades to protect his eyes from the dazzle of the door. These boys don’t seem to want to spare him, either. ‘That door looks much better,” Mr. Logsdon seems to be saying. But I wonder where Jerry wipes his hands. 91 DRY CLEANING Janet Bitah seems to be using the “tongue in cheek” decide to use scissors. WELDING method of removing spots. Let’s hope she doesn’t ELECTRICITY Observing Wilson Burbank’s fine work is Mr. Kirkland, the Welding instructor. Mr. Lovelace, the Electricity instructor is instructing Tom Wilson and Ronnie Will- mond in repairing various electrical ap- pliances. 92 BODY AND FENDER Mr. Larney’s Body and Fender class seems to be thinking, “Rebuild this car! He’s gotta be kidding! PRACTICAL ARTS MACHINE SHOP PRACTICAL ARTS WOOD SHOP Mr. Means, machine shop instructor, is passing his latest techniques to the boys. With all equipment necessary, Mr. Per- ico’s boys are working quite efficiently. 93 COSMETOLOGY FOODS With the professional work of Velma and Eileen Moore, this patron will be a raving beauty after the treatment”. It looks as though the Foods Department has concocted an unusual delicacy. Every- one is sampling it. CLOTHING DEPARTMENT The Clothing Department must be having a fashion show. The two lovely models are Janice Jackson and Rita Ward. SEWING Perhaps these girls will one day be fash- ion designers and reside in Paris, France. What do you think? 94 AGGIE SHOW Another group of boys who are doing a good job of handling their sheep are: first place, David Betonie; second place, Daniel Barney, and third place, Timothy Foster. Announcing the winners of the best handling of sheep is Mr. Claude Livingston and handing out the ribbons is Dr. Wall. The many hours of grooming, feeding, and caring for their sheep has proven worthwhile for these boys. Willie Yazzie took first prize, Paul Cowboy took second, and third place went to Wayne Shonnie. Wayne Higgins’ steer looks re- bellious. Maybe you should be just a bit more cautious, Wayne. 95 AGGIE SHOW I wonder what Aggie instructor.
