ADMINISTRATION MR. WALKER, MRS. WERNEKE RETIRE Mr. George W. Walker, former Chilocco Principal, who retired December 30, 1966, after 31 years is pictured here receiving from Dr. Leon Wall a binder for mementos of his work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and Chilocco In- dian School. Mr. Walker became principal bf Chilocco after transferring from Cheyenne-Arapaho Indian School, Concho, Oklahoma in the fall of 1962. In February, 1937, I resigned from the Public Schools to enter the Indian Service. All new teachers to the Na- vajo Reservation reported to Tohatchi, New Mexico for an orientation. On March 10, 1937, I was assigned to Leupp School, Leupp, Arizona, where I taught three and one-half terms. From there, I went to teach in the high school at Tuba City, Arizona. Then in 1941, I went into Counseling work at Fort Wingate School, Fort Wingate, New Mexico. From 1943 to 1945, I was a teacher in the WAVES In 1947, I was requested by Mr. L. E. Correll to come to Chilocco. In the following year, Mr. Werneke and I were married and both continued on in the positions which we now hold today. The only time I was away from the job was in 1952 for about five months when our daughter, Jeri Lyn, was born. To the graduates of this year, I sincerely hope you will hold fast to the goal that you have in mind. Continue to work for your education and keep in mind when the going gets rough that it was hard for others at times but they made it so you can too. FOREWORD For those who have never been here, this is what we are like. For those who are here now, here are memories that have been preserv- ed for following years to come. For those who have gone, this is what we did. We, the Annual Staff, have strived to capture the highlights of the 1966-67 school year. Our special thanks to Noah Billie who designed the cover and artwork throughout the book. As this school year closes and each of us will be going our sep- arate ways, remember what we have profited here at Chilocco. May we always be proud of our alma mater. ( jUU AiaS Editor DEDICATION Home Two was opened January 15, 1884, after the Unjted States Congress passed a bill May 17, 1882, known as The Indian Appropriations Act, Whereby a sum of money was to be appropriated for the building of a school for Indian youth. That year, Mr. James M. Haworth, Superintendent of Indian Education was sent to investigate the ad- visability of such a plan. This sight, where Home Two now stands was selected and construction be- gan on the project. It was decided to house all de- partments under one roof and by January 1884 it was completed and ready for occupancy. It was then used to house classrooms, student living quarters, the dining area, the hospital and employ- ees quarters. It has been since used as a dormitory for small boys. A campus landmark, Home Two is being torn down after 82 years of service to make way for progress. To Home Two, the oldest building on campus, we the Senior Class of 1967 dedicate to you the ’67 Chiloccoan. 2

SUPERINTENDENT, NEW PRINCIPAL SPEAK Congratulations to Students: We believe you have completed a prof- itable year of your life. You have pre- pared your educational assignments ac- ceptably and have experienced being evaluated many times educationally and socially. One of the greatest feats you have ac- complished is to have lived successfully in the free society of 1,000 other bflys and girls much as yourself. This type living demands the development of a mature unselfish, resourceful and friendly atli tude. As a result of this year of experi- ence at Chilocco, we believe you will be a more capable citizen and be more able to live better in the world of today. The world of tomorrow is unknown Many changes are expected. We believe you have learned to accept changes and to make rapid adjustment as demanded May we wish you courage in continuinc your educational program next year that you have planned. Best wishes for a profitable summer Leon Wall, Superintendent You who are graduating this 1967 school year are to be commended for having at- tained this important achievement. There has never been a time when an education was as important as it is today. You have laid the foundation for the next step in a very busy world which has many oppor- tunities. Your high school education will make it possible for you to take advant- age of these opportunties and to meet the challenges of the changes taking place to- day. Those of you who are to graduate at a later date can look forward to the time you too will finish your high school educa- tion. Your interest in school achievement will bring you success.
