Set, Hut, Hut, Hut. Those football signals echoed over the CHS practice field August 15, 1970, as 60-plus football hopefuls began as a unit to dedicate themselves to a major goal. That major goal was first to qualify and then to win the Missouri High School AAA football championship. Missing out on the play- offs in two previous years because of the point system used to qualify teams, CHS scheduled larger schools in a determined effort to make 1970 the year of the Big Red Machine . Changing to a new conference--Midland Empire- - Chillicothe ran rampant over one for after another until reaching a regular and loop season finale against St. Joseph Benton. It was a60-8victory over their fourth big city team that qualified the HOR- NETS f or the state playoffs and answered all the critics' ques- tion: How would the H O R N E T S do against stiffer com- petition. It was then that Coach Bob Fairchild, his staff and squad began a brief, but very im- '-EPFON The South . Dexter proved to be no tougher than any of the previous 10 foes as the HORNETS scored a crushing 32-6 victory in a near- perfect football game. Tradition and supreme team effort was a major factor. It was an historic event in Chillicothe High School Athletics, giving the HORNETS their first major STATE TITLE ever, and first state crown of any size since an indoor track title in 1940. The AAA CHAMPS had proved they were truly No. l and were given a royal welcome with a memorable motorcade by the greatests fans in the world through the city. The many plaudits the coaching staff and players received in the 1970 foot- ball season were well deserved and they came in large numbers. Eight players were awarded All-Dis- trict recognition. All ll offensive starters w e r e given first ,S AAA team or Hon- orable men- tion on the a 1 l confer- ence t e a m as well as two f rom WECAIBALL portant 2-game post sea- the defense son series to claim the n o t all big s t a t e ready prize. O fl the Before a offense. record home c r o w d of 4,200 great fans, Chil- li c o t h e ' s poised and talented football team displayed its high-geared offensive ability and hard-nosed defense. Semi- finalist Warrensburg, found out what had been said was true, the HORNETS were a GREAT football team. When it was all over, CHS had put together a 29-12 victory, number 33 in a row at home and were on their way to the STATE . Shifting the scene to The Missouri Valley College gridiron at Marshall and with the sup- port of over 1,500 Chillicothe fans, the HOR- NETS squared off against Dexter, The Pride of The HORNETS established a FIRST at the state level when FOUR players were named to the AAA Missouri High School All State Team. Tackles Sherm Smith and Mike Fair were named on both the offense and defense, quarterback Brent Anderson to offense, and Back Ardell Johnson to the defense. Hard work and effort byagroup of dedicated players and coaches allowed CHS to reach its greatest Athletic Height. With this in mind, the CRESSET Staff on behalf of the CHS Student Body dedicate the 1970-71 CRESSET to the HORNET grid Machine and its coaches for a task well done. You truly are STATE CHAMPIONS and your marks of 1970 will be long remembered at CHS.
