The 1969 Cresset is dedicated to one who represents the acme of administrative ability. This yearbook, like the grand old brick and mortar edifice at 1535 Calhoun, is a monument to him who has borne its charge for the past twenty-three years. As he stood, so the structure symbol- izes, as it rests strong, sturdy, and stately. To be able to withstand the storms of the superintend- ency is in itself a task. But to accept that position and function effectively and contributively to the school systems educational worth for such a period of time denotes praiseworthy effort, productivity, a positive outlook, and mature perserverance. To see a student and faculty population surge would in some men cause despair and desertion. But this man was not just some man. His staff was his companionship and the children his reward. His affection was reciprocal. He gave out much and to him much was given. He was known and renown. You could hear it in the excited voice of an elementary child as he shouted his identity, lVlr. Houston! lVlr. Houston! . He met the discipline necessary to operate well the educational machinery of the district. In the competition for accomplishment he frequently triumphed and his con- tributions were hailed by local and state professionals alike. ln the arena of praise he was ever humble. This was the nature of lVlr. Raymond Houston. He chastised with compassion, complimented with con- sistency, and directed with decisiveness. He walked the narrow line between school board approval, community demands, and teacher insistencies with grace and dignity. This was the manner of lVlr. Raymond Houston. He possessed the instinct to measure the passions of man. He was shrewd in judgment, appropriate with congrat- ulations, and keen to uniquely respond to individual needs. His motto was donation rather than duration, andthe former resulted in the latter. This was the role oflVlr. Raymond Houston. You have left your mark on our reminiscenses. You still superintend our thinking. The educational construct you leave behind projects far into the future. In admiration we offer our gratitude. ln thanksgiving we render you respect. ln appreciation we applaud your accomplishments. In memory we hold fast your ideals, your ingenuity, and your identity. Dedication 2
