Schoolma The name of John A. Smith exemplifies many qual- ities and virtues in school work and in citizenship. His life of hard work-plied in almost unvarying rou- tine-began in his rural boyhood home near the village of Graysville in Monroe County. His lifetime work with hooks and students began when he entered the first grade in the community one-room school. After Son John com- pleted the first eight grades, his father sent the fourteen- year-old hoy to the Ohio Wesleyan University Academy for his high school training. This four-year course the young scholar completed in two years. Thereupon he en- rolled in Ohio Wesleyan University as a full-fledged freshman. Taking his major work in physics, chemistry, and mathematics, he was awarded his Bachelor of Science degree cum laude in June, 1908. While at college in Delaware, he met Miss Eudora Ruth Davis, a native of that city, who became Mrs. John A Smith in 1909. In the summer of 1908 John A. Smith came to Chilli- cothe to teach science in the high school at the West Fifth Street building. While on this job he designed new chem- istry laboratory tables and reactivated the military unit known as the C. H. S. Cadets. When the C. H. S. principalship became vacant in 1914, John Smith forthwith went to Superintendent Frank J.
