The Chili Sclhool Building was built in 1917 during the time in which E. C. Love was township trustee. The building, situated at a very favorable lo-cation and with th-e most modern improvements, was quite an asset to the community. Before that 'time students had attended school in the old frame building across from the M. E- Church. In 1924 the gyminasiurn was fbuilt and since that time many additions have been made in modern equipment, the most noticeafble being made during the last few years. We are truly proud of our sfchool. 'Th-e Chili High School ofwes much to its trustee and advisory board, Lorenzo Doud, Fran'k rMusse1man and David Bell, who have proved most efficient. In 1935 they estab- lished a commercial 'course and have shown in every way their keen interest in all school and community activities. WILFOIQD li. DIFE T-rustee of Rlichland Twp. Schools of today direct their training along professional ani individual lines and give such political training as is necessary for the understand- ing and preservation of modern democracy, rather than restricting it to itihe re ligious, ethi-cal, and cultual training of forcmer days, Contrary, to the belief of many people, educaion is not obtained entirely in the schools, although the school is perhaps tne mst iniportant factor. A very vital part of the eduicafilion of every child begins in the homie. There the halbits are formed whi-ch determine the measure by which the child is able to profit by the advantages of t-he school. 'The types of education which We consider most important. are cultural, technical, specialized, appreciation of the a-rts, and busil-essg but the value of any of these to the individual ,depends to a large ex.ent upon the depth of the general education upon which it is based. 'There are many different ideas about the value of an education although most people judge it in terms of dollars and cents. 'While we must admit that we are living ni an economic era and that this is an important factor, it is by far the least importanii. Th-e real value of an education is the ability to adjust ones self to changing conditions in a happy and unselfish manner, the keen satisfaction of a good job well done, and the appreciation of the finer things of life. There are many phases of education. 'Health education is probably the foundation, for without good health the other phases cannot be developed to their fullest ex- tent. .Social education is probasbly second for the ability to get along with ones fellow citizens tactfully, which is populargy call personality, is a very important phase. Equally important phases are the aibility to earn a living, worthy home membershiip, and worthy use of leisure time. These important phas-es and ideals may be realized by the training of they church, the school, the home, ones environment, travel, worthwhile readlng, ability fto Work hard, d-evelc-pnzent of hoblbies, appreciation of nature, cultivation of the arts, de- velopment of ones own personality, and numerous other ways. Therefore, we may conclude that education is no longer considered a prpara- tion only for life but it is life itself and ccnainues after all formal schooling is over. -Kathleen Doud- PAGE 16 Q 1 , . Q 4: 19 f' I it If W x SALUTATO DY Parents, Friends, and Classmates: I am very happy to have the honor of bringing to you the Salutatory Address. As spokesman for the Senior Class of 1'93l7, I wish to extend to you our most sin- cere thanks for the sacrifices which you have made in aiding us in the complelting of our high school stairway. During four years of hard work and fruitful studying, we have looked forward to the time when we shoulld comfplete our high school ed- ucation. We have long awaited the hour when we could go out into the world pre- pared to do something worthwhile for ourselves and others. Now the time has come and we hope we are worthy of our places i'I1 t-he worlld. For four years -our small class has been working diligently to clifmfn 'the ladder of education: sometimes the way has been rather easy with sunny skies, at others the way was very difficult and skies were cloudy. But, through all, we have pushed forward without fear or hesitation. Today we are standing on the top lan-ding of our high school stairs, looking out over the different fields of life in which we will take our respective places, but always looking upward for means of improve- ment- . To us, it is a new day. We are leaving the old familiar life behind and entering into the new life with new and glrealter hopes for the future. We are very grateful to our parents and friends who have made it possible for us to receive such cap- able instruction and guidance. Our falculty- has done mu-ch for us and I am certain that we will always value their advice highly. A true education not only walkes in the unambitious youth a feeling that life has a work for him to do, but it also makes him strive to do this work in the best possilble way. The future of our nati-on depends upon the young men and young women to maintain the high standards taught to us during our school career, and' make ours a better nation in which to live. In conclusion, we thank you, parents and tea-chers, for the part you have played in our education and for enabling us to finish our high sfchool career successfully. -Galen Eiler PAGE I7 S522 tx me ffl Y' 5-0 R 0 B 1255 39 Q et? on 1 X gs, ,f g l S :ay Aw Q . ti - C' 'la in U CLASS HISTOIQY In September, 19133, twenty five freshmen made their appearance at the doors of Chili High School. We came with spirits high and pressnled to our Leader the hard earned material from which to fashion our crafts to sail life's sea. We were initiated into the Chili High School by the Sop-homores on October 3, 1933. We had several parties and mlany interesting events occurred during the year. Our Freshmen year proved to lbe a very successful one. Steering clear of all rocks, we were permitted to enter the .Sophomore sea. During our voyage as Sc-phomcrss vie encounter-ed many more rocks, but were able 'to sail through. Our cvlass was entertained by our Geometry Teacher, Mrs. Mowrer. Nearly all our members tock part in the Chili Spring Festival. We were able to reach the Junior port safely. Our Junior sea looked stormy and rough, but we took heart and started out bravely. During the year we set several new standards. A school orchestra was organized in which a number of Juniors acquired a place. We purchased our high school rings that year rather than waiting until we were Seniors, Leading parts in the Operetta were filled by our class. We had a student to enter the State Latin Contest who won honoralble mention, Our class was the first to present a Junior Play which was entitled The Phantcrn Bellsj' and was given on March 2'0, 1936- Our Junior-Senior Ban-quet was held at the Hotel LaFoun'taine in Huntington, Indiana, April 110, 19316. Another eventful year had passed and we were ready to set sail for that wond- rous Senior sea. We are all struggling hard on this last voyage cheering and helping on-e another. We presented our Senior Class Play, entitle-:l Marry Befone Midnight , December 2 and 3. Our class has made sevfrasl contrilbutions to the school, our greatest one being the publishing of this annual. We also contributed toward the DUI'ChaSif1g Of curtains for the High School Auditorium. We are now nearing the end of our High School Voyage when we must bid fare- welll to old C. H- S. and go out into the world and try to Sail toward success. We are very appreciative of the splendid cooperation cur faculty has given us and eX- tend our most sincere wishes to our successors who will tafke the place of our clasS of 1937. -Marguerite Keirn PAGE 18 CLASS WILL We, the class of 19137, of Chilli High School, being of sound mind and mem-ory do hereby make our last will and testament Cgn the twenty third of Pupril in the year of C-ur Lord 1957, I, Esther bell, hereby bequeath my patience to Leah Stone. Ans- wering it I found my caller to be a telegraph boy. To my surprise he brought good news. I had inherit-ed One Hundred Thousand Dollars from a rich uncle whom I 'had hardly known. After I had gotten over the excitement I started planning what I should do next. The first thought that 'came into rmy mind was that now I might take a long de- sired trip around the world. II determined to start immediately. 'The next afternoon, which was Jl1I1'EI5,i1l950, I started, with 'my cousin Ann for New York. After arriving there fwe purchased 'airplane tickets and were soon 'winging our 'way toward the ol-d 1wo-rlld. fSince I had anticipated a long tiresome -trip to England can you imagine my de-light in finding that our conpilot was to be none other than my old school chum, Marguerite 'Keirn. We vtalked albout old times at Chili High School. iShe told me that she had been 'flying for thr-ee years and that soon she .hoped to earn her pilot's fwings. I found she could not tell me much about our other 'classmates except, of course, that Galen fEiler had just been elected Governor of New York. Our :first stop was in London, England, where :I had to leave Marguerite for 'her return trip to the United :Stat-es. While 'walking iby a large cathedral I heard soft organ music and upon .enltering fwhom should I find the musi-cia-n to be but Rosanna Resler. I visited fwith her for a short tifm-e. In the 'course of our conversation she told me that she had fbeen disappointed in love and was mourning her life away. She spent a portion of her time each day in playing wedding marches on the cathedral organ. I proceeded from London t-o Paris where I spent a few days with Doris Conner, now one of the most .famous dress designers in the world. Arfter visiting with Doris and spending a 'few days sight-seeing in and around Paris, we resumed our trip by flying to Tripoli on the coast of North Africa. There again, while visiting one ofthe night clulbs in Tripoli, I received a very happy surprise. Whom should we encounter but another former classmate - Pauline Fouts- We 'discovered -that she had estalblished a beauty shoppe in Tripoli and had developed a large native trade in a face lotion which was guaranteed to remove all trace off -tan. The only schoolmat-e she 'could tell me about 'was Leo ll-Iively. She said she understood that he was gaining great popularity and had acquired a 'fortune in rSouth America by selling a pom-padour wax, From Tripoli we took passage on ia steamer lbound for the good Old U. S- A. Luck it seems was with us. We were invite-d to sit at the icaptain's 'table for din- ner on the first night out. Upon entering 'the dining room we were very surprised and happy to find that our host was none other than Captain Louis King. Robert Crippen chief deck scrtblber' on the steamer, stated that he had received word from our old friend Hugh Rcblbins, who seemed quite thrilled albout :being accepted as Minister of th Paw Paw iM, E. Finding I must spend on-e night in the famed city, Reno, I -decided to ta'ke in a show. As I was 'entering wh-om should 'I encounter but Esther !Bell. She joined me and we spent the evening chatting -over old times. To my surprise she told me she was at Reno for the customary purpose of getting a divorce, this being hier third one. We parted, her final fbit of advice ringing In my ears - that I should leave men alone -that they couldn't be trusted. While passing through Missouri I .had the .misfortune to have serious motor trouble and was detained in Kansas 'City for two days. In search of some way to spend my time I noticed a bill board which stated that the Ringling Brothers were coming the next day featuring the fam-ous Lion Tamer, 4G3eorgie Eiken- berry, the 'world's most nimfble Trapeze Performer, Esther Fisher, and the great Magician and Swond 1Swaillower, Robert Burns. Of icourse I could not miss such a bit of good fortune so I started for their show and spent some time visiting with them. When my car was fixed, I resumed my journey and stopping at St, Louis whom should I find to be fighting that particular evening for Ure heavy weight 'champion- ship but 'Wendell Clingaman. Of 'course he won the fight with no effort whatsoever. Motoring on to South Bend I decided to visit the famed School of St. Mary's and who should I see there as a 'very devout Catholic Nun but Alice Engelman. my old pal and classmate. Italiked t-o her for a few minu-tes and she explained that the only way she could ever become Devine was to be converted into the Catholic faith. I next stopped in Indianapolis and picking up a newspaper, .my attention was immediately attracted 'by the headline. It was to the affect that a Missionary Department of the Brethern Church was trying to raise enough money to send Blanche Weishaar to a cannilbial island as a Missionary, Recognizing her as one of -our -classmates, I sent in my contribution immediately, for I knew Bilan-che would make a first rate fmissionary, I also noticed two ads of particular interest: Permanent Wave While you Wait - Prof. 'Carrol Zinn, an-d 'Let me look in the Crystal Baall and gee whatfs in the future for you - Dean Hileman. While waiting in the rest room at iAyres I ibecame acquainted with a lady who mentioned the name of Kathleen Doud Erenson. I inlquired further for .I hadn't heard about her for years. She told me that Kathleen was the most scientific farmer in the country. She has a model farm of ten acres and makes it support her shiiltiless husband and five children as well as herself. I was quite thrilled over my trip for I was successful in either seeing or hearing from every one of my classmates of Chili 'High School. We received the usual welcome by the upper classmen and after a very impressive initiation by the sophomores we felt at home as memfbers of the C. H. S. We have been very unfortunate in losing memlbers as our present en- rollment is now six girls and five boys. Our Sophomore year was rather uneventfulg a party was held at the home of OW-en anfd Irma Grace Fisher's after which we att-ended a theater party at Peru. On May 6, 19.316, we were deeply grieved by the death of Lester Schrader. who had been a ntemlber of our class for sieverasl years. He is not dead, the boy of our affection, But gone unto that school Where he no longer needs our poor protection And Christ him-self doth rule. Moving into our Junior year we found mu-ch more work to accomplish. We held a .Halloween party at the Stoner fa-nm, purchased class rings, and gave a class play entitled Dotty and Daffy. IS-ome of the Juniors were in the cast of the High School play, Cheerio, My Deerio , and the Operetta. -- Kathryn Long PAGE 25 S C s Q wfb Z V9 Q as pf ?? 9 v fff-as p -s , l l X an I 0 ' a lg First row - Thanet Boswell, Lola Buck, Mary Buck, Mary Louise Burns, Victor Burns, Mary Elizafbeth Butt, Kenneth Clingaman, Frances Eikenlberry. Through the efforts of the pupils in the Seventh and Eighth Grades, 108 new books were added to the library this year, Mr. Rife supplied hailf of the money and the pupils sold candy during the fall months to earn their share of the money. This has given the-m an added interest and sense of responsirbility for their library. The library How, we feel, is second to non-e in the county. The Seventh and Eighth Grade Room has regular periods for Physical Education for the boys and girls. The boys had a soft ball team last fall and played several games with other schools, they wo-n two games out 0-f three. 'They also -organized a basket-lball team. Although the boys lacked experience they were not beaten by any schools of the same enrollment, however, Walbash and Peru J.H.lS. each beat them twice. PAGE 29 if ,Fa SL S A 41 W? Thnough 'me spirits immortal speak the message that makes the world weep, and laugh, and Wonder, and worship. I tell the story of love, the st-ory of hate, the story that saves, and the story that dalmuns. I am the incense upon which :prayers float to Heaven. I am the smoke which palls over the field of lbattle where men lie dying with -me on their lips. I am close to the marriage altar, aned when the graves open I stand neanby. I call the wanderer home, I rescue the soul from the depths, I open the lips of lovers, and through me the dead whisper to the living. OI1eI serve as I serve all: and the king I make my slave as easily as I sufbject his slave. I spea-k through the birds of the air, the insects of the field, the crash of waters on rock--rifbibed shores, the sighing of wind in the trees, and I am even heard by the soul that knows me in the clatter of wheels on -city streets. I know no brother, yet all men are my brothersg I alm the father of the best that is in them, and they are fathers of the best that is in meg I am of them, and they are of me.
