He was M. C. at the Miss Chil- howie Beauty Pageant which was held on September 20 in the C. H. S. auditorium. The beauty pageant was sponsored by the Guidance Department. Fifty-eight girls from grades 10-12 competed for the title of Miss Chilhowie 1973. After the final round of elimi¬ nation, Mr. Cleve Compton crowned Dixie Tilson, Miss Chilhowie 1973. Jackie Berry, first runner-up, and Patty Mc¬ Allister, second runner-up, re¬ ceived flowers from Reva Rouse, Miss Chilhowie 1972. Pictured at the right is Dixie Tilson, Miss Chilhowie 1973. Pictured at the top of this page is the Freshman class float. Junior Class Tries Their Hand At Acting A man, his wife, and a family of twelve chil¬ dren? All of these characters were involved when the Junior Class presented the play, “Cheaper By The Dozen”, to the public on December 19 in the school auditorium. The play was very successful with its comical view of a family of twelve children who have an efficiency engineer for a father. The play was directed by Mrs. Jean Hamm and Mrs. Char¬ lotte S. Sutherland. Bebbie Clark was student director. Cast members shown below right are Doug Rowland, FJaine Sturgill, Perry Skeen, Kathy Heath, Kerry Donnelly, Ronnie Lindsey, Debbie Dixon, Kathy Sturgill, Kendall Johnson, and Angela King. If it does, perhaps you were a member of Sylvia Barrett’s English class when the Senior Class presented “Up The Down Staircase’’ on March 28, 1974, at 8:00 p.m. in the C.H.S. auditorium. Sylvia had recently moved to New York City for her first teaching job. Her attempts to reach her rebellious students failed due to their refusals to cooperate with Sylvia. Her efforts, however, were not useless as she final¬ ly gained acceptance from her students. Mr. Jerry A. Eggers, class sponsor, directed the play. Student directors were Rita Mc¬ Ghee, Eva Blevins and Mary Lynn Ratliff. Mrs. Pansy R. Rollins was in charge of make¬ up. Pictures of couples attending the prom were taken beneath a lovely full bloom dogwood outside the ballroom. C.H.S. seniors departed from the front steps of the high school April 30 with “Big George” and “Mighty Ralph” steering the crowd of 76 students and six chaperones. After dinner, the group enjoyed a trip to the Wax Museum. Wednesday and Thursday were filled with many tours, much walking, tired feet, blisters and some complaining. Thursday night was a gay time with a boat ride on the Potomac River into Maryland to an amusement park at which the group enjoyed many different rides. Friday saw the group heading back to Chilhowie in the rain. The group stopped at Lion Country near Richmond — a new site that is not completely fin¬ ished. From there, the group headed home with entertainment by Brad Mullen on the boys’ bus and the “dancing bunnies” on the girls’ bus. The buses rolled in home to C.H.S. at 10:00 p.m., Friday, May 3. The English Department guides students through the corridors of literature with an emphasis on the meaning and implication of the stories. Speech and Drama was taught by a new teacher, Mrs. Jean Hamm. During the latter part of the school year, students enrolled in Speech presented a play to the student body and faculty. As an additional resource to students, the Li¬ brary offered materials for research and enjoy¬ able reading. TOP: Kathy Heath, Betty Sheets, and Sharon Dempsey use the library during Study Hall. The required science courses are Introductory Physical Science, offered to eighth and ninth graders, and Biology, which is required during the Sophomore year. Chemistry is taught as an elective during the Junior and Senior year. Physics is taught as an elective to seniors. If you see a student holding his hand or pulling his hair, he is probably working a problem that has been assigned by one of the math teachers. Two years of math are required for all students. Re¬ quired subjects are Math 8 and either Math 9 or Algebra I. Algebra H, Plane and Solid Geometry, Advanced Math, and Refresher Math are offered as electives to the upper classmen. Math And Science Develop The Powers Of Anal3d:ical Thinking 39 French, Band, And Music And Art Appreciation Open To Students The World Of Fine Arts The sounds of musical instru¬ ments echoed throughout the halls as the band practiced for another successful year in their performances in concerts, pep rallies, football games, and area competition with other schools. The French III class went on a field trip to Le Chateau in Johnson City for french cuisine, and later in the evening went to see the movie “The Exorcist”. In May, the class also visited the Barter Theatre where they saw Moliere’s “Scapin”. The lives and works of such famous artists as Picasso and Van Gogh, and such respected composers as Chopin and Bach were studied by students of the Music and Art Appreciation class. French HI students, LEFT, gave a party for their teacher, Mrs. Pansy R. Cook¬ ing is but part of what is taught in the Home Economic’s courses. Sewing and various methods of developing a higher degree of social and personal behavior are also taught. Four years of Home Economics are offered to students, including Home Ec. V for Senior girls that have not previously taken Home Economics. Beside Home Economics the Vocational Department provides courses in agriculture. This offers boys and girls a chance to work with machinery in addition to forestry, con¬ servation, and the improving of farms making them more efficient. In this day and age when it pays to be knowledgeable in the business field, it is nice to know that the Business Department prepares students for the business world. Several classes were offered to prepare students for the business world. Typewriting I, Personal Typing, Shorthand I, General Busi¬ ness, Bookkeeping, and Clerk Typ¬ ist I and II, both of which were two- hour classes, were offered to the students.
