VOCATIONAL DEPARTMENT Home economics, agriculture-related sub¬ jects, and mechanics make up the courses offered in the Vocational Department. The main project of the boys enrolled in the shop courses was the construction of addi¬ tional bleachers (pictured in center) for the athletic field. The girls learned other skills in shop work as shown below at far right (Debbie Sexton, Shirley Teaters, Sandy Wal¬ ker). Boys who were members of “Keep Vir¬ ginia Green” were called into service fight¬ ing forest fires. Home economics students made money for the FHA by taking orders for baked goods. Jane Goode and Nancy McClure are shown below preparing food for sale. Home Ec stu¬ dents also received instruction in other areas of home-making.
