The Social Studies Department offered as required subjects American history in the Eighth Grade, United States and Virginia history in the eleventh grade, and United States and Virginia government in the twelfth grade. These courses were designed to promote good citizenship through better understanding of the United States and its people. As electives the department offered classes in world history and global geography. Various methods of instruction included map study, term papers and reports, art work, audio¬ visual aids, and class and panel discus¬ sions. Jimmy Gillenwater works on his term paper.
