Physical Education Builds Strong Bodies The screams of excitement coming from the gym are indicative of the two¬ fold purpose of the physical education department: to provide the opportun¬ ity for the normal physical growth and development of all pupils and to provide wholesome recreation. These objectives are carried out on alternate days in health and gym classes, re¬ quired of all students for three years. In addition to these classes, students may elect to enroll in the driver educa¬ tion program in which the partici¬ pants are given classroom instruction in sound driving practices and actual behind-the-wheel experience. 17

Music Enhances Life At CHS “One, two, three; one, two, three; do, re, mi, do, re, mi—” Those are sounds coming from the music depart¬ ment. Besides discovering and devel¬ oping the talents of students enrolled in these classes, the hand and chorus provide enjoyment for not only those persons participating hut also for the whole student body and community as well. Just as life would be drab with¬ out the joys of music, so would life at CHS be incomplete without the enrich¬ ment of the music department. During the year the band received a Division I rating (Superior) at the Southeastern Band Festival in Bristol, a Division I rating (Superior) playing Grade IV music in the District Concert Festival, and First Place in the Dog¬ wood Festival Parade Competition at Vinton. 16

Vocational Arts Offer Practical Courses “Girls in agriculture???” No longer is home economics the only vocational course at CHS offered to girls. Girls may now enroll in Agriculture Education, de¬ signed to provide meaningful educational experiences and to develop the students knowledge, skills, and abilities in related fields of agriculture. Other courses in the agriculture department which are still offered primarily to boys include those in agriculture science, general mechanics, machinery, and exploratory agriculture. Classes in the five-year home economics program help girls not only to acquire those skills which contribute to home and family living, but also to develop proper habits of personal and social behavior. 18
