Social St udies Classes Emphasize Citizenship “I believe in the United States of America as a nation of the people, by the people, for the people ...” Classes in the social studies help students to develop democratic prin¬ ciples. Students in classes in American his¬ tory in the eighth grade, world history and U.S. and Virginia history in the eleventh grade learn through class discussions, Hlms, charts, skits, and other varied ways. Maps and globes, as well as charts, are necessary devices in global geography classes. Basic knowledge gained in these classes provide a good background for U.S. and Virginia government, offered in the senior year. Stu¬ dents also study the organization of the United Nations. Producing loyal, well-in¬ formed citizens is the chief goal of the govern¬ ment classes, which are appropriately high¬ lighted by the senior trip to the nation’s capi¬ tal. 10

Math Classes Meet Needs Of All Students One does not need to be a millionaire or an important business executive to need mathematics. With this fact in mind, the math courses at CHS are aimed at meeting the needs of all students whether they be enrolled in academic or non-academic courses of study. These include general mathematics in the eighth and ninth grades, two years of algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. Al¬ though drill work is important, other de¬ vices to aid learning in these classes in¬ clude among other things, models, over¬ head transparencies, compasses, transits, and tables. 12
