This monotonous drill is a neces¬ sary part of Typing I classes offered by the business department, which attempts to develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed by students who plan to enter the business field, or by those stu¬ dents who will take typing for their own personal use. Other business classes in¬ clude Typing II, Shorthand I and II, Gen¬ eral Business, Bookkeeping, and a two- hour course in Office Procedures. In the latter class students use various office equipment such as electric typewriters, calculators, and dictaphones and train to become efficient workers in the business world. In all these business courses the necessity for neatness and accuracy is stressed. Students are given the oppor¬ tunity to develop initiative and the ability to follow instructions. 8

Language Arts Develop Skills In Communication “Parlez-vous francais — or English?” To in¬ still in students good habits in speaking, reading, listeni ng, and writing is the purpose of the lan¬ guage arts courses, which at CHS include five years of English, two of French, and special classes in reading skills. In English classes time is divided among grammar, literature, and com¬ position. Various devices for learning, apprecia¬ tion, and enjoyment include diagramming, en¬ actment of scenes fi om literature, discussions, tape recordings, records, overhead transparen¬ cies, and films. French classes this year acquired earphones, enabling several students to listen to tapes at one time. Classes in reading skills are offered to eighth graders to improve their read¬ ing speed and comprehension. 7
