In English classes time is divided among grammar, literature, and com¬ position. Various devices for learning, apprecia¬ tion, and enjoyment include diagramming, en¬ actment of scenes fi om literature, discussions, tape recordings, records, overhead transparen¬ cies, and films. French classes this year acquired earphones, enabling several students to listen to tapes at one time. Classes in reading skills are offered to eighth graders to improve their read¬ ing speed and comprehension. 7 i Students Prepare For The Business World ; a-s-d-f-j-k-1-; a-s-d-f-j-k- 1-; . . This monotonous drill is a neces¬ sary part of Typing I classes offered by the business department, which attempts to develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed by students who plan to enter the business field, or by those stu¬ dents who will take typing for their own personal use. Other business classes in¬ clude Typing II, Shorthand I and II, Gen¬ eral Business, Bookkeeping, and a two- hour course in Office Procedures. In the latter class students use various office equipment such as electric typewriters, calculators, and dictaphones and train to become efficient workers in the business world. In all these business courses the necessity for neatness and accuracy is stressed. Students are given the oppor¬ tunity to develop initiative and the ability to follow instructions. 8 9 Social St udies Classes Emphasize Citizenship “I believe in the United States of America as a nation of the people, by the people, for the people ...” Classes in the social studies help students to develop democratic prin¬ ciples. Students in classes in American his¬ tory in the eighth grade, world history and U.S. and Virginia history in the eleventh grade learn through class discussions, Hlms, charts, skits, and other varied ways. Maps and globes, as well as charts, are necessary devices in global geography classes. Basic knowledge gained in these classes provide a good background for U.S. and Virginia government, offered in the senior year. Stu¬ dents also study the organization of the United Nations. Producing loyal, well-in¬ formed citizens is the chief goal of the govern¬ ment classes, which are appropriately high¬ lighted by the senior trip to the nation’s capi¬ tal. 10 Math Classes Meet Needs Of All Students One does not need to be a millionaire or an important business executive to need mathematics. With this fact in mind, the math courses at CHS are aimed at meeting the needs of all students whether they be enrolled in academic or non-academic courses of study. These include general mathematics in the eighth and ninth grades, two years of algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry. Al¬ though drill work is important, other de¬ vices to aid learning in these classes in¬ clude among other things, models, over¬ head transparencies, compasses, transits, and tables. 12 13 Sciences Help Students Probe The Universe Just follow your nose, and you will find the chemistry lab, where students probe the com¬ position of the world around them. Or visit a biology class, where the students learn about plant and animal organisms, or a physics or general science class, where scientific prin¬ ciples are applied to everyday living. Through all of these activities students get a better un¬ derstanding of man and his environment and are better prepared to cope with the myriad problems facing modern man. This year, as in the past, students enrolled in science classes worked hard preparing projects for the school Science Fair. In addition to this participation, three chemistry students entered projects in the Western Virginia Science Fair. 14 15 Music Enhances Life At CHS “One, two, three; one, two, three; do, re, mi, do, re, mi—” Those are sounds coming from the music depart¬ ment. Besides discovering and devel¬ oping the talents of students enrolled in these classes, the hand and chorus provide enjoyment for not only those persons participating hut also for the whole student body and community as well. Just as life would be drab with¬ out the joys of music, so would life at CHS be incomplete without the enrich¬ ment of the music department. During the year the band received a Division I rating (Superior) at the Southeastern Band Festival in Bristol, a Division I rating (Superior) playing Grade IV music in the District Concert Festival, and First Place in the Dog¬ wood Festival Parade Competition at Vinton. 16 Physical Education Builds Strong Bodies The screams of excitement coming from the gym are indicative of the two¬ fold purpose of the physical education department: to provide the opportun¬ ity for the normal physical growth and development of all pupils and to provide wholesome recreation. These objectives are carried out on alternate days in health and gym classes, re¬ quired of all students for three years. In addition to these classes, students may elect to enroll in the driver educa¬ tion program in which the partici¬ pants are given classroom instruction in sound driving practices and actual behind-the-wheel experience. 17 Vocational Arts Offer Practical Courses “Girls in agriculture???” No longer is home economics the only vocational course at CHS offered to girls. Girls may now enroll in Agriculture Education, de¬ signed to provide meaningful educational experiences and to develop the students knowledge, skills, and abilities in related fields of agriculture. Other courses in the agriculture department which are still offered primarily to boys include those in agriculture science, general mechanics, machinery, and exploratory agriculture. Classes in the five-year home economics program help girls not only to acquire those skills which contribute to home and family living, but also to develop proper habits of personal and social behavior. 18 19 “Y” Clubs Provide Services The main goals of the “Y” clubs this year were to help underprivileged children of the area and to learn more about the functions of state government. In trying to achieve these goals, the Co- Ed Hi-Y sent toys to needy children at Christmas, the Tri-Hi-Y collected money for Easter Seals, and the Hi-Y sponsored a candy sale. Each club was represented in a state con¬ ference. The Tri-Hi-Y and Hi-Y sent dele¬ gates to the Model General Assembly in Richmond, and the Co-Ed Hi-Y sent repre¬ sentatives to their General Assembly in Harrisonburg. These three clubs also served as host to the District YMCA meet¬ ing. 20 21 A great deal of work and considera¬ tion went into the school publications this year. The school newspaper, the Chila- zette, published all club news, record¬ ed interviews with school personali¬ ties, and gave vital sports statistics. An added feature was a section of ele¬ mentary school news. The publishing of the Chilvalee was the job of the annual staff. Members sold ads and subscriptions and worked hard writing copy, drawing layout, taking necessary pictures, and getting everything ready for publication, even down to the ffnal punctuation mark. 22 The School Year Publications Record 23 Student Cooperative Association And National The SCA began the school year with the thought of providing new handbooks for next years’ students and of improving and beautifying the school. A major handbook fund-raising project was Carnival Day. At this event all clubs and classes had fun booths with the proHts being divided between the SCA and the various organizations. The SCA diving booth proved to be one of the most hilarious events and attracted students as well as the faculty. To culminate its projects .. . 24 Honor Society Both Provide Able Leadership . . . the SCA helped in getting a juke¬ box for the cafeteria, sponsored clean¬ up day, and held campaigns and elec¬ tions for next years’ SCA officers. Providing a new trophy case was the main objective of the National Honor Society this year. In order to obtain this objective members worked hard to prepare for “The Battle of the Bands,’’ which proved to be a great success. Ten sophomore students, chosen on the qualities of character, leadership, service and scholarship, were induct¬ ed into the club during a school as¬ sembly and new officers were in¬ stalled. The club also was in charge of coordinating American Education Week, diu’ing which time it sponsored Kiddie Kollege in assembly. 25 Various activities kept members of the vocational clubs busy during the year. A major project of the FFA was the landscaping of the new agriculture building. At a Student-Parent ban¬ quet members received awards for outstanding service in vocational ag¬ riculture. The club was also repre¬ sented in a statewide public speaking contest. “To dare to care” was the motto for the FHA during the year. The main objective was to teach young ladies responsibilities of family and com¬ munity . . . 26 Vocational Clubs Have Active Year . . . living. To show that they cared and to contribute communi¬ ty service, the FHA members did volunteer work in caring for pa¬ tients at Valley Nursing Home. In November they observed National Education Week. A Mother- Daughter banquet concluded the year’s events, at which time new officers were installed. Through the FBLA, members learned more about the business world. They gained experience in salesmanship and added to their treasury by selling stationery. Tbeir balloon-bursting booth on Canival Day provided fun for themselves as well as for all others who participated. 27 ] I The Band, the Chorus, and the Forensic Club provided many enjoyable moments during the year. The Band livened up pep rallies, entertained at football half-time activities, marched in parades and had several stage performances, including the graduation exercises. The Chorus, in addition to providing special music in assemblies, also sang at... ... the baccalaureate services. The Forensics Club in addition to inter¬ esting monthly meetings presented a one- act play, “Red Carnations,” entered con¬ testants in the county forensic meet and sent delegates to a forensic clinic at Wise, Virginia. 29 Subject Clubs Have Interesting Programs Members of the Science Club sought through its programs to learn more about science in general. The club’s main proj¬ ect was to sponsor a Christmas Dance where all ate, danced, and enjoyed them¬ selves. “Le Cercle Francais” was composed of students studying French. Each club meeting was very enjoyable with pro¬ grams ranging from French fashions to puppet shows and from French marriage customs to Joan of Arc. The club also had a lively blue, white and red-decorated car in the homecoming parade. 30 31 Clubs Encourage Interest In Sports The Monogram Club, made up of boys who had lettered in a varsity sport, had as its chief project of the year the presentation to the school of banners honoring CHS district basket¬ ball champions. The Girls’ Athletic Association tried to inspire more interest and participa¬ tion in Girls’ sports, especially in bas¬ ketball and volleyball. Members had a lot of fun at their “jail” on Carnival Day by summoning “delinquents” and collecting “bail” which, of course, was added to their treasury. 32 I 33 Bus Patrol Promotes Safety Members of the bus patrol help¬ ed to load buses safely and to keep good discipline on them. When¬ ever it was necessary, patrols flagged traffic and helped bus drivers enforce safety and traffic rules. 34 Library Club Helps Students And Librarian “Will you find book 920K, please?” This was a familiar sound to Library Club members who assisted the Li¬ brarian and students. A project to send contestants to “Klassroom Quiz” on WCYB-TV proved worthwhile to the club trea¬ sury, as was their fortune-telling booth on Carnival Day. 35 A Variety Of Activities Fill The Year 36 37 Junior And Senior Plays Were Hits Man Overboard Junior Play December 4, 1969 Miss Hannah Blair ..... From the moment they donned their caps and gowns, they began to realize that their high school days were drawing to a close. This fact was further impressed upon them as they listened to the Rev. Wilmer B. Robbins, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, the Honorable J. Aubrey Matthews, Judge of the Twenty-Third Judi¬ cial Circuit of Virginia, and John Beckner, Valedictorian. The final moment arrived as Mr. W. C. Kelly of the Smyth County School Board handed them their diplomas. 47 48 The Junior-Senior Prom Was Fun “Three Coins In A Fountain” was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom on May 9, 1970, where the guests had an enjoyable evening — a treasured memory. 49 Seniors Enjoy Their Washington Trip 50 1 51 52 CHS Homecoming Queen Is Crowned Pretty weather, pretty floats, and pretty girls contributed to successful Homecoming festivities on October 17, 1969. In the colorful parade preceding the football game with Graham High School “G-Men” the Junior Class received first place for its float, “A Smashing Victory.” During the game’s half¬ time activities Sandra Casey was crowned Queen by Charlie Clark, Mack Blevins, and Charlie Wilson, tri-captains of the Warrior football team. Each one of the Queen’s attendants represented a CHS class. Pictured at left are Patricia Owens, Eighth Grade; Freda Blevins, Sophomore Class; Cathy Smith, Junior Class; Donna Sauls, Senior Class; and Pam Shuler, Freshman Class. Homecoming was indeed a treasured memory. 54 Warrior Football Team Rebuilds The Warrior football team had a rebuilding year in ’69-’70. The team ended the season with a record of 2 wins and 8 losses. Even though the young Warriors faced larger, more experienced teams, they upheld CHS tradition and never gave up. By the Hnal games of the season Chilhowie’s War¬ riors showed great improvement and development. 56 The ’69-’70 basketball season was the best in Chilhowie’s his¬ tory. After defeating the Marion Hurricanes in three consecutive games, the Warrior team cap¬ tured the Smyth County Title for Chilhowie. In the District the CHS Warriors were undefeated and won the District VI Tourna¬ ment for the third consecutive year. The Warrior team then tra¬ veled to Blacksburg, where they received their first and only defeat to a Virginia team. The Warriors ended a fine season with the out¬ standing record of 21 wins and 3 losses. Irr Junior Varsity Has Fine Record While the Varsity team was building their splen¬ did record, the Warrior Junior Varsity players were doing no less. Chil- howie’s J.V. team had one of the best seasons the school had seen in several years. They ended their season with a fine record of thirteen wins and five losses. Baseball Team Does Not Give Up The ’69-’70 season was a rebuilding time for the Warrior baseball team. The team was young and inexperienced, but by the end of the season the players showed much improvement. Although the season ended with a record of no wins and twenty-one losses, the Warriors never gave up. 60 CHS Wrestler Places Fourth In State The wrestling team had a 1-8 record, but several CHS grapplers had outstanding records. Charlie Clark was the regional champion of the unlimited weight class and went on to finish fourth in the State finals. Stanley Landis was champion and Dean Adams runner-up in their respective clas¬ ses in District VI. The JV team all had winning individual records. 61 Golf And Track Teams Break Records The Warrior golf team compiled its best record ever during the ’69- ’70 season, closing with eight wins, four losses, and one tie. Two team members distinguished themselves during the year. Steve Berry became the first athlete to letter in golf for four consecutive seasons, and David Berry had the best individual record, posting eleven wins and only one loss. 62 The CHS track team had a good season during which six of its members (Hicks, Palmer, Jones, Crewey, Frye, Donnelly) set new school records, and five boys (Hicks, Gillenwater, O’Brien, Pal¬ mer, Jones) represented District VI at Char¬ lottesville. The Warriors took second place in the County meet. . -« i: Girls’ Athletic Teams Have Active Year The Girls’ Varsity basketball team, showing determination and stamina, experienced a very successful season with seven wins and five losses under the leadership of Coach Walker. Though the Junior Varsity had a losing season with four wins and eight losses, they provided much support for the Varsity. The Girls’ volleyball team, while not having area com¬ petitors, played in a tournament in Kingsport and in one at ETSU, where it placed second. 64 65 PRINCIPALS Mr. W. W. Baker Mr. David H.
