Three faculty members work under the agriculture department. Mr. William St. John teaches courses in Girls’ Agriculture Education, General Mechanics, and Agriculture Machinery Service. Mr. Larkin Phillips teaches Agriculture Science, Mechanics, and Production Agriculture. Mr. Glenn Anderson instructs classes in Agri¬ culture Science, Mechanics, and Exploratory Agriculture. { i BUSINESS Business courses are offered to those students who plan to pursue business careers after graduation and to supplement another course of study. Typing l and II, Shorthand 1 and 11, General Business, Bookkeeping, and Office Procedures are classes offered. Mrs. Kay Denton, Mrs. Mary B. Aker, and Miss Norma Johnson are the instructors in this area. 9 HOME ECONOMICS Home Economics, a vocational course, offers its students knowledge and practical application in all phases of home¬ making, which are necessary to improve family living in today’s world. Mrs. Gladys Frye teaches classes in Home Economics I, 11, 111, and IV in addition to a one year course for Senior girls. Miss Marion Russell teaches classes in Home Economics 1 and Exploratory Home Economics for Eighth Grade girls. to LANGUAGE ARTS Chilhowie High School requires five years of English. Each year is divided into one half grammar and one half literature. The faculty members composing the English department are Mrs. Champ Clark, Miss Mary Payne Copenhaver, Mrs. June M. Conner, Mrs. A. B. Farmer, Mrs. Bobby L. Puckett, Mrs. Pansy R. Rollins, and Miss Louise Snavely. One foreign language is offered in two courses, French I and II. Both of these courses are instructed by Mrs. Pansy R. Rollins. 11 MATHEMATICS Mathematics courses are scheduled in order to offer students a basic knowledge of numbers as used in practical situations and to prepare students for future study in this area. Three faculty members are included in this area of study. Mr. Vince Brown instructs classes in Eighth Grade Mathematics. Miss Elizabeth Love teaches Algebra 1 and Algebra 11 courses. Plane and Solid Geometry and Trigonometry are instructed by Mr. Ronald R Sutherland. 12 ijfcj PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical Education courses are offered as one half physical fitness and one hall health. Miss Nancy Little instructs both phases of Physical Education for girls at Chilhowie High. Mr. Arnold Mellinger instructs boys in both phases of Physical Education as well as instructs students in a Driver Education Course. The Driver Education course involves classroom study and actual driving experience on roads. 13 SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies courses endeavor to offer students knowledge of history, geography, and world affairs. Classes in American and World History, Global Geography, and Government are offered. Miss Louise Snavely, Mr. Gary E. Arnold, Mr. Ronald Bales, Mr. Dwight Barker, and Mr. David Burton are teachers in this area. 14 SCIENCES Science courses are offered in four areas. Modern Physical Science courses are taught by Mrs. Cleve Compton. Mr. Dwight Barker teaches classes in Bi¬ ology. Mrs. Judith C. Smith instructs Biology and Chemistry classes. Mr. Ronald R. Sutherland instructs the Physics class. The parade Friday afternoon included entries from the various classes and clubs. The Home¬ coming game between the Chilhowie Warriors and Patrick Henry Rebels was a close-fought battle with the Rebels coming out on top 14 to 7. The queen’s coronation and the awarding of float prizes at half-time of the game high¬ lighted the week’s activities. The Freshman Class worked hard on their float, “Race to Victory.” The Junior Class Presents Take Your Medicine On December 12, 1968, the Junior Class presented Take Your Medicine , a hilarious comedy in a hospital setting. Complications develop when patients Dodson and Puckett become the “victims” of a college professor thought to be a doctor, of flirtatious Miss Finkle- dink, and of bungling aides Jack and Dodie. Vincent Barrett was pre¬ sented April 24, 1969, by the Senior Class. The plot concerned the comic misadventures of a young business man and Ins best friend after an oriental girl ' s life is saved. She becomes the slave of anyone who saves her life and several attempts are made. Matters get worse when the mother-in-law comes to visit and is kidnapped by mistake. At right below: Entering historic Monticello at Charlottesville. 28 The 1969 Commencement Exercises Make 29 Commencement exercises for the eighty-two members of the 1969 Senior Class began with the Baccalaureate Service on June 1, 1969. Speaker for the occasion was Dr. Primitivo Delgado, Dean of Bluefield College, Bluefield, Virginia. The Reverend T. Spencer LeGrand of the Riverside Baptist Church assisted in the service. On Tuesday evening, June 3, the Seniors again gathered in the Chilhowie High School auditorium for the apex ot their high school careers - graduation. The Reverend J. W. Satter¬ field of the Chilhowie United Methodist Circuit gave the A Memorable And Lasting Impression invocation. After the salutatory address by Donna Pennington Peake and the valedictory address by Charlee Beth Martin. Principal William W. Baker introduced Mr. John Newhard, executive of the American Screw Company of Wytheville, Virginia, who admonished the Seniors to get and keep enthusiasm, to plan ahead step by step, and to give of their best. After numerous awards were presented to outstanding students, diplomas were awarded by Mr. William C. Kelly, Chilhowie’s representative on the Smyth County School Board. 30 Upon The Eighty-Two CHS Seniors Preceding the recessional, the Seniors sang in farewell the CHS “Alma Mater.” C ommencement exercises impressed upon the 1969 Seniors their class motto: Plus Ultra, “This far and farther.” VALEDICTORIAN SALUTATOR1AN Mr. Newhard STUDENT COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION The Student Cooperative Association is an organization for all members of the C.H.S. student body. It is governed by a council and officers who are responsible for student-faculty relations. Each homeroom elects a representative who keeps his fellow classmates informed of the council’s actions. New officers are elected in the spring by the student body. The S.C.A. sponsored many activities such as clean-up day. The District Conference was held at C.H.S. and was a success. Beginning with a colorful initia¬ tion, Joyce Widner and Dave Berry, dressed in the French colors, red, white, and blue, received first prizes. Club meetings were highlighted by guest speakers and films. All members participated in singing of French songs. Dedication of the French flag was the climax of the Club ' s activities. 36 CHILAZETTE STAFF Highlights of happenings during the year are publicized in the school newspaper, the CHILAZETTE. Staff members report the news, and typists prepare the paper for publica¬ tion. Each issue contains an editorial written by one of the co-editors. The paper is sold during homeroom period by appointed staff members. The CHILVALEE is distributed in the fall. 37 GIRLS’ ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION One of the largest clubs at C.H.S., the G.A.A., excels in pro¬ moting girls sports. Members participated in basketball, volleyball, and track. A bake sale and pop bottle drive, along with various other projects, provided funds for the purchase of hurdles for the track teams. Initia¬ tion, an annual event, is the second requirement for membership. Collect¬ ing pop bottles boosted the club’s budget and helped members toward the purchasing of school jackets. Selling candy proved to be a suc¬ cessful money-raiser. The club sponsored an orphan in Viet Nam. Bob Waters and Johnny Beckner were chosen to represent the club at Model General Assembly. The Tri-Hi-Y strived to fulfill their purpose, “To create, maintain, and extend throughout the home, school, and com¬ munity high standards of Christian living.” As a community pro¬ ject Tri-lli-Y members collected money for the March of Dimes. Its teams in Federation competition placed first in mechanics judging and never lower than fourth in livestock judging, public speaking, and tractor driving. The overall objective of the F.H.A. is to help individuals improve personal, family, and community living, with “Forward New Horizons” as its motto. Pride and enthusiasm reigned at CHS this year as the basketball team again won the District VI Championship. By defeating Abingdon, the Warriors earned the right to represent District VI in the Group II State Regionals at Blacksburg. The mighty Warriors beat the Fries Wildcats and moved on to the State Semi-Finals at Charlottesville. Here the Warriors made a fine showing, losing by only two points to Suffolk, who went on to win the State Championship. The Varsity and Junior Varsity teams also participated in the Smyth County Tournament at Marion, each winn¬ ing second place.
