Mr. A.B. Farmer gives instructions to a student, J.R. McClure. BEST WISHES, MR. FARMER! Members of the annual staff of CHS wish to pay tribute to Mr. A.B. Farmer, who is retiring from the teaching profession. Mr. Farmer, a native of Halifax County and later a resident of Pittsylvania County, was graduated from the secondary school at Ringgold, Virginia, and at¬ tended Hargrave Military Academy at Chatham, Vir¬ ginia. He was graduated from VP1 with a BS degree in Agronomy, and the following year he received a Master of Science degree in Agriculture Education from the same institution. Later he also received a Master of Science degree in Agronomy from Iowa State University. Mr. Farmer’s first teaching position was in Court- land, Virginia, where he taught agriculture and coached football. In the fall of 1938 Mr. Farmer came to CHS as instructor of agriculture and sponsor of the FFA. During the war years he was responsible for adult classes in farm machinery and food preservation. At that time the Chilhowie Cannery was opened, and Mr. Farmer took over its management. Mr. Farmer has been active in church and com¬ munity affairs, serving two terms on the Town Council. The students and faculty will miss Mr. Farmer with his calm, dignified manner, his high sense of values, his humor, his Eastern Virginia accent. “Ah, shux, Mr. Farmer, we do declare, we shall miss you!” Best wishes for a happy retirement! Teachers watch a movie and listen to an accompanying recording about life at CHS, made by Professor George A. Smalling of Emory Henry College. STUDENT TEACHERS: Mr. Harry Taylor, Miss Ruth Ann Farley, Miss Margaret Kane, Mr. J.D. Reed. NOT PICTURED: Mrs. Thomas West, Mr. Ken Grubb, Mr. Frederick Sprenger, and Mr. Fredrick Staub.
