- FOREWORD Beginning in the spring of 1966 the school administration and faculty began preparations for a year of self-evaluation. This study was intensified with the opening of the 1966-67 ses¬ sion and gained momentum among the students as well as the faculty as the year progressed. By the time the Visiting Evaluation Committee arrived in April numerous reports had been compiled. Below and on the following pages the annual staff wishes to share with the read¬ ers of THE CHILVALEE excerpts from the summaries of some of these reports. CHS PHILOSOPHY We believe that every individual is of in¬ finite worth and for this reason our paramount objective is to help each student in our school, regardless of his intellectual level, social or economic status, realize his worth as an in¬ dividual and develop to the maximum of his abilities. We also believe we should endeavor to enhance the student’s understanding and ap¬ preciation of esthetic, spiritual, and moral values and encourage him to reflect them in his daily living. We believe that one of the chief aims of Chilhowie High School is to inspire our stu¬ dents to know themselves and to become intel¬ lectually prepared, physically healthy, emo¬ tionally mature, and socially adjusted in order to meet the demands of a rapidly changing so¬ ciety. EVALUATION Published by The Annual Staff of CHILHOWIE HIGH SCHOOL Chilhowie, Virginia Jayne Martin, Editor Nellie Breedlove, Business Manager Miss Louise Snavely, Adviser 11 j . iV l The CHS administration, faculty, staff In one of its many meetings the faculty makes preliminary plans for the school ' s self-evaluation. SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY Chilhowie High School with an enrollment of 478 and a faculty of twenty-seven is located in Chilhowie, Virginia, on the Lee Highway. Hence the yearbook is called THE CHIL- VALEE. The high school building, erected in 1958, is situated on the site of an ancient Cherokee Indian burial ground near the Middle Fork of the Holston River. The name Chilhowie” is an Indian word meaning Valley of Many Deer. Therefore, the school ' s ath¬ letic teams are appropriately named the Warriors. Chilhowie, the site of the farthest settlement west in 1750, was first called Town House because Colonel James Patton chose the site for a fu¬ ture city. After the building of the railroad in 1856 a siding was put in near the Town House, and the com¬ munity growing up around it was The school entertains the Visiting Evaluation Committee, school and county officials, club and town leaders, faculty, staff, and guests at a dinner in the school cafeteria. Edmiston, adds its suggestions for the period of self- evaluation. and students spent many hours in Members of the Visiting Evaluation Committee listen as a faculty report is read to the group. Thompson, Director of Instruction, ex¬ presses greetings from the School Board, as Mr. Kelly Shutt, chairman of the Visiting Committee, listens. 5 preparation f New activities such as the tutoring programs helped the evaluation. Mrs. Sprenger captures the interest of students in reading. The trampoline, added during the special summer school program, creates more enthusiasm in gym classes. 6 0 evaluation committee have attended CHS during all of their school years. In 1965-66 only 7.3% of the students dropped out or transferred. This percentage was below the State average. Most adults in the community are in a middle-class income bracket, gaining their livelihoods either from farming, working in industries and building trades, as managers and owners of small businesses serving the community, or in the service occupations or professions. Quite active in the school and community life is the Parent-Teachers Association which makes a contribution toward the Senior trip, helps with the free lunch program, and aids various special school projects, such as the publication of the school handbook. Just as the patterns of behavior that char¬ acterize the student body are definite reflec¬ tions of the community, the school makes a definite and major contribution toward shap¬ ing the prevailing complex patterns of be¬ havior, as its graduates assume adult status.
