Mr. William Baker and Mr. Arnold Mellinger check absences before school each morning. CHS is LEADERSHIP exemplified Mr. J. Leonard Mauck, Superintendent of Smyth County Schools, and Mrs. Joyce Cornette, Clerk of the School Board. The Administration, headed by Super¬ intendent J. Leonard Mauck and Principal William Baker, and the faculty provide the leadership and inspiration necessary for the development of each student as a well- rounded citizen. The 1965-66 session saw many changes in the Administration and faculty. At mid¬ term Mr. Arnold Mellinger became assist¬ ant principal, succeeding Mr. Cleve Comp¬ ton, who was namedprincipal of the elemen¬ tary school. Mr. Joe Rusek replaced Mr. Compton as head football coach. These changes were brought about when Mr. J.D. Neeley, Director of Instruction in Smyth County, resigned in order to accept a su¬ perintendency in another county and Mr. E.R. Thompson succeeded him. Mr. Gre- ever Crouse became principal of Sugar Grove High School, replacing Mr. Thomp¬ son. Mr. Charles Campbell was added to the faculty. Able student leadership is provided by the SCA, which represents the entire school and acts as the coordinator of stu¬ dent activities. 4

Students prepare research assignments in the library. Chilhowie High School provides through its curriculum ample opportunity for scholastic growth. Courses are offered in academic, com¬ mercial, and vocational fields. Students may choose electives in the sciences, math, languages, social studies, commercial subjects, home eco¬ nomics, agriculture and shop. Recently added in the eighth grade are classes in reading skills and exploratory home economics and agriculture. These courses give the eighth grader opportunity to determine his interest and abilities. An additional teacher in the commercial department made it possible for more students to take business subjects during the 1965-66 session. A new course in office practice pro¬ vided practical experience for would-be secre¬ taries. Other new courses were added. Driver ' s training, offered for the first time during the summer of 1965, proved to be a popular one- semester course. 6
