THE ANNUAL STAFF CHILHOWIE HIGH SCHOOL CHILHOWIE. VIRGINIA I i I,’- 3f I ■x ' m CHS? Published by the Annual Staff of CHILHOWIE HIGH SCHOOL Chilhowie, Virginia Mr. William Baker and Mr. Arnold Mellinger check absences before school each morning. CHS is LEADERSHIP exemplified Mr. J. Leonard Mauck, Superintendent of Smyth County Schools, and Mrs. Joyce Cornette, Clerk of the School Board. The Administration, headed by Super¬ intendent J. Leonard Mauck and Principal William Baker, and the faculty provide the leadership and inspiration necessary for the development of each student as a well- rounded citizen. The 1965-66 session saw many changes in the Administration and faculty. At mid¬ term Mr. Arnold Mellinger became assist¬ ant principal, succeeding Mr. Cleve Comp¬ ton, who was namedprincipal of the elemen¬ tary school. Mr. Joe Rusek replaced Mr. Compton as head football coach. These changes were brought about when Mr. J.D. Neeley, Director of Instruction in Smyth County, resigned in order to accept a su¬ perintendency in another county and Mr. E.R. Thompson succeeded him. Mr. Gre- ever Crouse became principal of Sugar Grove High School, replacing Mr. Thomp¬ son. Mr. Charles Campbell was added to the faculty. Able student leadership is provided by the SCA, which represents the entire school and acts as the coordinator of stu¬ dent activities. 4 Miss Copenhaver as Guidance Director helps stu- Kay Greever as Student Cooperative Association President dents m e vocational and educational decisions. presides over assemblies. by the administration and faculty Miss Katrina Umberger, Smyth County Librarian, on the right, shows the new bookmobile to Mr. E. Students prepare research assignments in the library. Chilhowie High School provides through its curriculum ample opportunity for scholastic growth. Courses are offered in academic, com¬ mercial, and vocational fields. Students may choose electives in the sciences, math, languages, social studies, commercial subjects, home eco¬ nomics, agriculture and shop. Recently added in the eighth grade are classes in reading skills and exploratory home economics and agriculture. These courses give the eighth grader opportunity to determine his interest and abilities. An additional teacher in the commercial department made it possible for more students to take business subjects during the 1965-66 session. A new course in office practice pro¬ vided practical experience for would-be secre¬ taries. Other new courses were added. Driver ' s training, offered for the first time during the summer of 1965, proved to be a popular one- semester course. 6 Miss Elizabeth Love supervises the work of her Algebra I class vvIHl 7 Members of a physical education class listen attentively to instructions from Mrs. Basham. through a variety of classes, numerous tests, Mr. Farmer supervises practical work in a mechanical drawing class. Government students study the organization and functions of the executive branch. Several boys found that the new class in mechanical drawing was in¬ teresting as well as rewarding. Scholarship is encouraged through the publishing ot an honor roll after each grading period. Stu¬ dents on the A honor roll for the entire first semester were Judy Blevins, Sue Blevins, Ellen Bonham, Sammy Catron, Dora DeBusk, Diann DLxon, J. E, Edmiston, David Ellison, Diane Ellison, Vickie Evelsizer, Anita Goble, Linda Lou Jones, Charlee Beth Martin, Jayne Martin, Joyce Martin, Linda Lou Martin, Sue McClure, Don¬ na Pennington, Patsy Pierce, Fay Powers, Cynthia Robertson, Donna Roe, Bobby Waters, DLxie Waters, Carol Wilson. The SCA, composed of all members of the student body, is the voice through which students may express their ideas and wishes. By working in this organization students learn to participate in the democratic process by ; nominating and electing members to the SCA | Council. During the year this group sponsored | assembly programs, school dances, clean-up | week, and a drive to help needy families at j Christmas. The main project was the publica¬ tion of a student handbook. Other organizations also have as their aims the building of character and citizenship. The FFA trains rural citizens, while the FHA j encourages good citizenship in the home. The t Hi-Y and Tri-Hi-Y seek to uphold high stand- ii ards of Christian conduct. All CHS clubs, | whatever their aims, give students opportuni- ■ ties to become well-rounded citizens by de- I veloping and making use of their talents and abilities and by rendering service to their ! school and community. Members of the SCA Council work on the school handbook. CHS is CITIZENSHIP practiced in Volunteers decorate the school Christmas tree. Members of the G.A.A. pack food and clothing for the needy. CHS is SPORTSMANSHIP Jimmy Gross follows through with a left-handed layup. Competitive sports provide the atmos¬ phere in which good sportsmanship may be practiced at Chilhowie High. The Warriors field varsity teams in football, basketball, baseball, track, goK, and girls ' basketball. Chilhowie High is a mem¬ ber of District 6, one of the strongest Group H districts in the state. The athletic pro¬ gram at Chilhowie High is constantly chang¬ ing and improving to keep pace with district rivals. The cheerleaders encourage good sportsmanship and school spirit through pep rallies and posters appropriate for each competition. The Chilhowie Lions Club each year presents an award at graduation to the athlete who during the year has displayed the best sportsmanship. Although being a winner is important, emphasis is not placed solely on winning at CHS. Teamwork, fair play, and self disci¬ pline are main objectives of the athletic program. Football players charge eagerly through the band and cheerleader lineups. revealed by the Warriors ' teamwork and fair play Peggy Davis comes from behind for a quick catch. Besides selling ' ' themselves to the public and selling themselves to each other, the students during the 1965-66 session were busy in selling various products in order to raise money to finance numerous worthwhile projects. The Seniors had a most suc¬ cessful magazine sales campaign, topping all previous records. The profits from this drive helped finance their Washing¬ ton trip. Other groups made money by selling candy, pens, sweat shirts, cook books, garment bags, shoe polish, fire extinguishers, Christmas cards and paper. These efforts in salesmanship provided the students with invaluable ex¬ perience in meeting the public, in the art of persuasion, and in developing self¬ confidence-experiences needed in form¬ ing well-rounded citizens. i ITS 16 LEADERSHIP 17 MR. NOT PICTURED; Ann Scott, REPORTER. The 1965-66 Senior Class of Chilhowie High School was an active one. Starting with the magazine drive, which was the most suc¬ cessful one ever, through the Senior Play, Chilhowie Seniors worked long and hard to earn money for their trip to Washington. Although the Seniors looked forward to graduation night, it was very hard to break away from the friendships that were formed over the high school years. As the seniors make their way toward new horizons, they will always remember Chilhowie High School, no matter where the road of life will lead them.
