Preceding the game on Friday between the rugged Castlewood Blue Devils and the determined Warriors, the Warrior Band and Cheerleaders led a parade of eye-catching floats, followed by the homecoming queen and court in flashy convertibles, through the business section of town and onto the ball field. Half-time activities were climaxed by the crowning of the Queen, Shelia Greever, who was attended by representatives from the five classes. All were chosen by the student body. The thrill of winning the Homecoming game was echoed on Saturday night at the Harvest Moon dance, a fitting culmination of a fun-packed week-end. CHILHOWIE WARRIOR FOOTBALL With a record of five wins and one loss in district games the Warriors captured the Dis¬ trict 7 championship. In recognition of this achievement Mr. Chauncey DeVault of De- Vault ' s, Incorporated of Bristol, Virginia, in a special assembly presented a trophy to the team. Later the Lion ' s Club entertained the boys at a banquet at which Glenn Glass of the Los Angeles Rams was speaker. Perhaps the highest honor, however, came from the admi¬ ration and respect of fellow students. Coach Compton compliments the team Mr. DeVault presents the District 7 trophy to the Warrior Tri-Captains. in the special assembly. RONNY ADAMS Ronny was a strong link in the Warriors ' defensive chain. By picking up toward mid-season, he went on to become one of the better defensive ends and a very rugged lineman. CLAUDE BLEVINS Claude was a good, sturdy end and an effective offensive and defensive block¬ er. Asa dependable player who worked hard he was an asset to the victorious Warrior team. JERRY BLEVINS Jerry, a halfback who led the team in scoring, made the All-District team and received honorable mention in the State. As a tri-captain this 48 minute man displayed qualities of a good leader. TEAM CAPTURES THE DISTRICT . . . GEORGE COLLINS RANDAL FISHER DAVID HEATH Putting forth good speed on kickoffs, George showed ability as a defensive tackle. Though he was injured part of the season, he gave a fine performance when he did get to play. Randal, who did a lot of punt returning, was a shifty-running halfback. Although injuries kept him from being at his peak, he showed great ability on the defensive squad. Though injured most of the season, David, a tri-captain and halfback, play¬ ed two excellent ball games and gained recognition as the finest punter in this area-- The boy with the educated toe. EDDIE HORNE A hard-working tackle, Eddie put forth one hundred per cent effort at all times. He hit hard and stayed with it, contribut¬ ing toward the successful season of the champion Warrior team. PAUL JONES Although handicapped by size, Paul was a good, rugged defensive halfback and conscientious worker who had a lot of determination and stuck with it no mat¬ ter how rough things got. JOHN WAYNE MARTIN John Wayne excelled as an offensive blocker and defensive guard. He was always rugged when the chips were down. A determined player, he practiced every day while he had a broken arm. . . . SEVEN CHAMPIONSHIP RODNEY RUSSELL Rodney displayed ability as an offensive end and also as a pass receiver. Many of these passes were transformed into touchdowns, which made the Warriors ' victories come more easily. DONNIE THOMAS As a rugged tackle and dependable line¬ man Donnie, a tri-captain, excelled es¬ pecially when the going got rough. He was a hard-nosed defensive and offen¬ sive player as well as a good leader. JERRY WIDENER Jerry, an outstanding guard and tough lineman who produced hard blocks and powerful tackles, played both offensive¬ ly and defensively and was always alert [ when the team was in a tight place. Donnie Pruitt gains long yardage as Jimmy Hen- inger and Ronnie Ball cut off some fast Castlewood pursuers. Jimmy Gross runs for extra yardage while Don Hicks, Ronnie Ball, and Donnie Thomas block the Blue Devils. The Warriors opened the football season at home with a 20 to 13 defeat at the hands of the Scarlet Hurricanes. The next game was a district tilt at Damascus with the Warriors returning with a 7 to 0 victory. Following the Damascus game, the Warriors trounced Rural Retreat 20 to 0. The next week the Warriors lost a disappointing but hard-fought game to Saltville with a score of 6 to 0. The Warriors then bounced back with resounding and satisfying victories over Lebanon (28-6) and Rich Valley (13-0). Keyed up by home¬ coming festivities, the team marched on and over the powerful Castlewood Blue Devils by a score of 14 to 7 to bring the week-end acti¬ vities to a climax. David Heath is tackled as Dennis Johnson and Jerry Widener try to come to his aid. The Warriors, in doldrums after the Cas¬ tlewood game, were caught napping and were upset by Patrick Henry 7 to 6 With the Dis¬ trict 7 Championship onthe line the Warriors plucked the Abingdon Falcons 14 to 0 for the Warriors ' first District 7 championship in the history of Chilhowie High School. Although the Warriors were one of the smaller teams in the district, they proved to be powerful. They out-rushed and out-gained every opponent they faced. The Warriors never gave up when the going got rough but had a great desire and will to win. These qualities helped make them a champion ball club. Mickey Hall plows his way through the strong Castlewood line with great success. 79 FIRST ROW: David Blevins, Danny Widener, Larry Russell, Randal Eller, Randy Whetsel, Luther Williams.
