GAY WYATT Predictions Of YEAR: 1963 SCENE: Madame Zambi’s consulting room. ‘C ome right in and let Madame Zambi tell you what you wish to know. Won ' t you sit down and tell me what is on your mind?” ‘‘My wish is to have you look into your crystal ball and tell me where all of my pals of the class of 1953 are now. ” “Well, first I see in my crystal ball a football coach at Notre Dame. Ah yes, it is Bill Lewis. He is married and raising a football team of his own. As I gaze farther in, I see an ad in the “New York Times.” Wanted: A position as LAP secretary. Phone or write Lula Grey Thomas, South 2364, New York, N. Y. Well, I see that Bobbie Jean Wilmore finally got what she wanted. She is now a star on Broadway. Nancy Wolfe liked college life so well that she decided to stay at Radford College and teach business there. Well, what have we here? Harold Davenport is drawing comic strips for the ‘‘Roanoke Times. ” Here’s Haller Copenhaver. He has taken Rev. Phillippi’s place at Chilhowie Methodist Church. I see that Margaret Berry and Vivian Bland are still skating. They have become a skating team called the ‘‘Falliteers ” and are on tour in Europe. Bobby Goodman is now a Senator for Virginia. Here‘s Bill Wagner and Archie Sturgill. They have taken over all of the Cities Service Stations in South¬ west Virginia. Fred Martin is still a farmer. He has his own farm now with several little Juniors running around to help him. What’s this! A Lonely Hearts Club operated by Ann Donnelly and Florence Palmer. Here, I see, we have the first All-American girl basketball player, Jean McClure. Do my eyes deceive me, or is this-yes-it’s Sue Christian. She is now “Miss Universe.” Here’s Carol McKinnon. She has her own dress factory in Paris now. What’s this I see? The Stork Club has a new manager now, Betty Blevins. Her guest for tonight is Page Mullin, who has taken Tony Curtis’ place in stardom. Johnny Grinstead is campaign manager for Willis Blessing, who has been nominated for president. ! Zflings Zo Come You must tell Miss Copenhaver that one of her former students, Kenneth Thomas is playing the part as Romeo in Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet’’ at the Barter Theater. Charlotte Gillespie and Vivian Blankenbeckler are now head nurses at the Abingdon Hospital. As I look deeper into my crystal ball, I see a beautifully designed window in Macy’s Department Store. Wonder who could have designed it-none other than Helen Davenport. I see that Jean Sheets is still with the Piggly Wiggly. She is head of the Grocery Department. General Porter Heath is in Germany training former classmates Charles Evans, Jackie Stuart, and Jackson Powers. Who is this 1 see at Chilhowie High School teaching Agriculture? Could it be-why, of course, it’s Carl Hopkins, who has taken Mr. Farmer’s place. It looks as if Gipsie Buchanan has taken all of her interests to Rich Valley now. Who’s this with such a good suntan? Why, it’s Shirley Jo Tucker. She owns a coffee plantation in Bra¬ zil . Well, well, what have we here? Its Nancy Jones. She has her own model agency in New York, and Sue Heath and Kitty Sue Rice are modeling for her. Why, I didn’t know Eva Pierce could dance! She must have kept all of her dancing talent hidden in high school. She has teamed up with Dan Dailey now. Here’s Elmer Blevins, a successful lawyer , with his client, Arlene Johnson, studying grounds for her divorce. Elmer’s secretary, Nancy Greer, is inter rupting by saying, “Clyde Minnick is here to make his last will and testament. ’’ Who’s this I see in my crystal ball? Why, its Jackson Freeman. He’s a veterinarian and has his own animal hospital. His nurse is Martha Heath. Here we have our champion bowler, Betty Ann Jones. Ann Heath and Mary Alice Haga have taken Mrs. Rosenbaum’s place in C.H.S. Cafeteria. Itsagood thing that Peggy Stanberry and Carolene Smith took Home Economics when they were in High School because they need it in their new homes. What ' sthat cracking my crystal ball! Goodness, its Betty Dillow. She has taken Margaret Truman’s place in the Metropolitan Opera House. “Thank you, Madame Zambi. Airport on a su nny September morning in the year of 1949 to board the plane which would carry its load to four new and undisco¬ vered planets. The plane was christened “Accomplishment” and the passengers “Freshmen . Mr. Copenhaver was the Pilot with Miss Love and Mr. Murray as Co-Pilots. The passengers on the plane included forty-five from Chillhowie Grammar School, twenty-two from Riverside, sixteen from Seven Mile Ford, twelve from Barrack, and the others from surrounding schools. First we landed on the planet ‘Tnexperience ’’, where we were looked upon by the other planets with scorn. Bill Lewis and Haller Copenhaver were Co-Presidents; Charlotte Gillespie and Bobby Goodman, Vice- Presidents; Nancy Wolfe, Secretary; Bobbie Jean Wilmore, Treasurer; Kitty Sue Rice, Reporter. Next we landed on the planet “Endurance”, where we began to take on bigger responsibilities, and dropped that lost look of a freshman. The President was Jackie Simms and the Vice-President was Haller Co¬ penhaver. We landed on the Planet “Progress” with the forward look of be- coming Seniors. The President was Vivian Blankenbeckler, and the Vice-President was Sue Christian. The outstanding social event of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. With thrilling anticipa¬ tion we selected our class rings during the latter part of the year. The highlight of the year was the Junior play “The Baby Sitter”, which we presented with the help of Miss Anderson and Mr. Neely. It was indeed with dignity and pride that we landed on the fourth and last planet Success . No longer did we have to look entirely to some¬ one else as our leaders, for we now held in our grasp the honor of su¬ periority. We chose Haller Copenhaver as our President, Page Mullen as Vice-President, Kitty Sue Rice as Secretary, Johnny Grinstead as Treasurer, Bill Lewis as Class Representative, and Clyde Minnick as Watchdog . Miss Snavely was our Sponsor. The moment we had long waited for had at last arrived - we received our class rings. Instead of having a three-act Senior Play, we presented three one- act plays. They were I ' m a Fool . Nobody Sleeps , and Quiet Please. The plays were directed by Miss Copenhaver, Mrs. Brown, and Mr. Neely. We all had a lot of fun as well as hard work in presenting these plays. We took part in a stunt program by enacting Folly on a Trolly . Later we entertained the Farm Bureau with this stunt. It was a lot of fun! We enjoyed our trip to Washington in May and all our work and struggles to achieve this trip were well paid for. Although not outstanding in sports, we had six boys to letter in foot¬ ball; five girls lettered in basketball; one boy lettered in basketball. We also had four cheerleaders from our class. As the class departs, we realize that we have reached the peak of High School Success and look to the future with hopes that we may hold high the ideals of our class. We shall always keep with us and cherish the memories of our school days together. Although most of the boys were very small in size individually and very much underrated, through strong determination and willpower molded into a scrappy, Never say die , ball club. At the start of the season the line up was as follows: Left End, Bill Lewis; Left Tackle, Willis Blessing; Left Guard, Dickie Sturgill; Cen¬ ter, Page Mullen; Right Guard, Porter Heath; Right Tackle, Elmer Ble¬ vins; Right End, Tommy Tripplett and Dick Lovern; Quarter Back, Hal¬ ler Copenhaver; Left Half Back, Douglas Duncan; Right Half Back, Eve¬ rett Walton; Full Back, Micky Maust. Although the boys won six while dropping thirteen, their win and lose column does not really indicate the type ball these boys played. When winning or not they played as true sportsmen. Though they lost thirteen games, they always went down with determination and the will to win. For the starting line-up Harold Roland and Mickey Maust were at the forward positions. Doug Duncan and Everett Walton were at guard, and Bill Lewis at the pivot spot. Scoring leaders were Bill Lewis and Harold Roland with 270 and 255 points respectively. Other scorers were Bobby McVickers 71, Everett Walton 71, Mickey Maust 61, Doug Duncan 39,and Bobby Clapp 36 points. FIRST ROW: Everett Walton, Bobby McViker, Bobby Clapp , Harold Roland, Bill Lewis. Man¬ made fibers, new products of the chemist’s test-tube, have been a major contributor to this textile progress. A small textile producer in 1923, Burlington Mills believed in the future of rayon—an early man-made fiber. In the past 28 years Burlington has become a leader in the development and production of beautiful, durable and high-quality filament, spun and knit synthetic fabrics. From one plant with approximately 200 employees, our Company has grown to include 73 manufacturing plants in 43 communities of eight states and four foreign countries. Employing 34,000 people, Burlington is today the world’s largest producer of synthetic fabrics, and it is a recognized leader in the designing, development, research, merchandising and fashion fields as well as manu¬ facturing. If you are a young man or woman looking for a place in industry, we think you should consider textiles—and Burlington. It can hold a bright future for the person with the willingness to learn, ability to work, and the natural interest in this fascinating and competitive field.
