The ancient peoples realized the vital necessity of communicating their thoughts both by sound and by signs. The first and easiest step was by developing the mode of signs, by which they were able to transmit their thoughts to one another. Sign writing was used for several centuries, and it was not until about the time of Christ that sound language became popular. From that time on, sound language, as well as sign language, became of inter-tribal interest. Now it is of international interest. What a wonderful thing it is to be able to communicate our thoughts with one another, while practically all other animals of nature are not given the gift of speech. These languages are only keys to the Wardrobe of the English language. Our school is not well advanced along the line of languages. However, Latin and Spanish are offered, and these departments have some of the best teachers to be found in the state. That is one thing that Childress High School can boast of with pride-good teachers. The Latin and Spanish students will undoubtedly agree with us when we say that this is especially true because of the requirements in these subjects. The requirements are rather stiff, but that is the reason why we have these subjects affiliated. That is another thing that we can boast of. lt is hoped that in the near future, there will be more foreign languages offered in order to prepare the student for college. Page Twenty-Four F 5

Looks like this old boy has a very piercing problem just ahead of him, and fig one is already railing after him. VVe hope that rope doesn't break, or he will be QQ right in the middle of another one. That snake may be laughing at the old boy, but if . . . . gig., we know that he surely did pick a tough tornado for exercise. 'ffvv'3 il - - . . Vultures stare him and others in the face, but the fascination that has come from the study of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry has caused an enrollment of 390 V' . . . . . , ,, . . eil.: pupils in this subject this year. Our real 'common-sense reasoning comes from our Dv! l ik mathematics. 515 . . . Qi, Our earliest documents relating to geometry have come to us from Babylon and CEL Egypt. Those from Baylon were written about 200 B. C., on small clay tablets that if were afterwards baked in the sun. They show that the liabylonians of that period knew something of land measures and perhaps had advanced far enough to compute Q2 - - 'if' the area of a trapezoid. U-.Q ' The first great textbook on geometry, and the most famous one that has ever K . . . . . . ef' appeared, was written by Euclid, who taught mathematics in the great university at Alexandria, Egypt, about 300 B. C. His work is known as the elements, and, as was 373 the case with all ancient works, the leading divisions were called books, as is seen in the Bible and in such Latin writers as Caesar and Virgil. sy Q. my me R ae . me ms .Sw .. ffm mu- low- fs.
