Van Devanter Principal Our nation was conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. This is our hope, our faith and the philosophical basis for our existence as a nation. In political philosophy this means that each man is free to choose the pathway he will follow in the pursuit of happinessf' In educational theory this means that each student has some freedom of choice along the road to maturity. But freedom is not free. It must be earned, and the price is self-disciplineg for wherever freedom has led to chaos, it has been lost. Mr. R. E. The sophomore honor society was one of the largest in years, and has two great years to look forward to academically. The canned food drive netted over 7,500 cans, providing the class with an opportunity to serve the community. The class participation in the Cheering Chalice, pep assemblies, and other class competitions enabled us to feel a real part of Chief Sealth High School and showed that we can carry our share of the load. This year has been a good one, and with the contin- ued hard work of the members of this class, the next two will be even better. We . 7 :14 , 1 -fr .wg-, wa. With the knowledge from the previous year, junior committees worked hard at their tasks, and their effort was shown by the successful results. Among the class achievements was the Cheering Chalice, attended by many enthusiastic students. The tremendous spirit ol' the juniors ended the senior's dom- ination of this annual event. The Christmas Ball proved to be a great success by netting over Sl IO, the largest proht earned in the history ol' the dance. Juniors worked closely with the Senior class during the year, helping with Commencement and devoting a lot of time to the Senior Prom. Juniors also headed Sealth Salute Day committees and helped to make it a day to remember. I extend my congratulations and thanks to all junior representatives, committee chairmen, and members, and our capable class advisor, Mrs. Boawn, for the com- mendable job done this year. I hope that next year even more students will involve themselves in activities be- cause involvement is the key to a successful class. bd Nancy Coleman Secretary Paul Eklund Treasurer 32525 Jann Acey Arnold Anderson Barb Anderson Brad Anderson Jean Anderson -sw ..., 4 as Eg.. 2,5 F, .L 9' gi' rl -W 54' Mafilyn Bavkman BUNNY Barber Bill Barnes Linda Barnes lzdward Barnett 'A::i::-E2-: 'AMR . ggg igli ,,,. . .f of 6 J X- 'r A W., ik s ' 'lv , Q .-f. .. . K ay Lamb . .ily .AX You Can't Take It With Youu, by Moss Hart and George Kaufman, was presented this year by the Class of'68. The comedy is centered on the eccentric activities ofthe Vanderhof household. Its members believe firmly in Grandpa's philosophy of pursuing hap- piness whether or not that pursuit contorms with the rest ol society. The outcome included raising snakes, painting discus throwers, and ballet dancing to the Xylophone in the living room. All this was done to the boom ofthe fireworks experiments being carried on in the basement. Penny . . . .... Karolyn Graves Rheba ...,...,. Paul Sycamore . , Mr. DePinna . . . Ed .........,,,. The Concert Band entertained at some school assemblies this year. Pep Band's lively music added extra spirit to the school assem- blies, pep assemblies, and certain athletic events. Its members take on a great responsibility in that they play at all football and basketball games. Their activities included singing in the Seven Lively Arts Festival, for the White Center Kiwanis Club, and in numerous school assemblies. They also participated in the Winter Concert and Christmas Program. Directed by Mr. Smith, the Sealth Singers provide students an opportunity to perform many different types of music for both student and adult audiences. On some occasions, the Sophomore Choir added their voices to those of the Sealth Singers. This added more depth to the singing, as well as gave valuable performing experience to those in the Sophomore Choir. 71 ' 4 4 Zzz ' .Z ,ki ' . -wwf' an Stage Crew combines imagination with outstanding abilities in lighting, and building and painting scenery, to produce the ingenious sets used in Chief Sealth's produc- tions. The members of the crew devote many hours in and out of school. Without their dedicated work, successful production of school plays would be impossible. Chief Sealth's Children's Theater travels to grade schools in the area and presents such plays as Peter Rabbit , The Emperor's Nightingale , and Hansel and Gretel . Besides giving the children their first acquaintance with live theater, these plays also serve to give drama students a chance to perform before live audiences. Each of these plays is completely produced by drama students. They function as an opportunity for student actors and directors to work as a team with prop and costume managers. This working together is the real core of the theater. af sports iv T y T a if N 5 w 3 Y ff MQW W x J 1 ' yu! Each of the team mem- bers must be skillful at his individual position, as well as an asset to the team as a whole. Our team showed it had these qualifications, as well as a sense of dedi- cation and school spirit. Highlights of the season were the victories over Rainier Beach 14-OJ and Cleveland 19-43. . . it i' Tennis Team, Front row, left to right: Jeff Davis, Max Spra- gue, Bill Moor, Herb Oke, Steve Madden, Coach Tom Griff- ith. Lively dancing and singing to the music of Meredith Wilson are in sharp contrast with his haunting, lyrical numbers. This music seems to echo Molly's story, first overflowing with joy, then meloncholy, but always a story of a truly warm human being.
