To the Underclass men: The texture and design, as well as the durability and beauty of a fabric are dependent upon the weav- er's wisdomin selecting the fibers. Analagous to the process of weaving fabric is the building of a useful, enriched, and happy life. The experiences encountered in daily living, the knowledge and un- derstandings acquired as we jour- ney through life provide the founda- tionfor weaving a cloth of strength and quality. Regrettably, it is not the indi- vidual's prerogative to select all the threads forthe fabric of his life. The warp, the threads lengthwise ina loom, are fixed firmly in place by virtue of heredity and environ- ment. The person himself, none the less, is the weaver of the strands which cross the warp, which give pattern, form, and meaning to the finished product. Among the variety of materials from which the weaver makes his selection are the quality fibers - compassion, charity, love, humil- ity, tolerance, self-discipline, loy- alty, integrity, dependability, fore- sight, cooperation, patience, re- sponsibility, fairness, understand- ing, humor, appreciation, and wis- dom. The life that is woven of these golden threads is one of stability in the face of emotional strain, of di- rection amid chaos, of understand- ing despite oppression, of self-re- spect in an atmosphere of derision, of serenity though encompassed by confusion, and of successes built on failures. A thing of beauty is a. joy for- ever, wrote Keats. Choose each thread wisely as you weave so that the priceless fab- ric of your life will be a thing of beauty. Sincerely, J.
