Therefore we, the Senior Classes of l953, dedicate this first volume of The Legend to that spirit of co-operation which enabled the Indians and white men of old to become friends and which is today making it possible for the students of Burnham and Derry to work together and play together ina spirit of friendliness and good will. We leave our Alma Materwith the sincere hope that this spirit will continue until both schools are finally united in one new building which can offer the students of Burnham-Derry the greatest opportunities of a modern American education. .5 lg f'X U fs -49' r ,s f f- X , . xy 1 If . x ' 3 ' it E , 5 X '- i 5' Ti i ii- - LH ,:. The marching band received acclaim as one of the largest and most interesting football show bands in this part of the state, Its half-time shows consisted of unusual formations and drills originating mainly out of a featured field- long company front line, Spotlighted were individual and group soloists playing marching and popular music. Comedy acts also pleased the spectators, All maneuvers were accentuated with the music of eighty instrumentalists. Snap, flash, and color were the forte of the first edition of the Burnham-Derry Joint High School Band. And its first venture as a Show Band was a successl The concert band was initially presented in a special Christmas program in both Burnham and Derry assemblies with unique arrangements of favorite Christmas selections, In January the Burnham-Derry concert band was very cap- abably represented in the District Band Festival in Martinsburg by Five of its outstanding musicians: Jack Spearing, trombone: Nancy Baker, bassoon: Kay Goss and Norma Freed, clarinet: and Barbara Bell, French horn, The band continued on its road to success in March withits annual spring concert, under the direction of Mr, Hans W, Uberseder, The concert season was augmented with the continuation of exhange concerts presented in neighboring schools, Good will through music was the theme at the innovation of these concerts. Our band was well received as an ensemble of top caliber, In addition to this superior senior band, a Burnham-Derry Junior Varsity Band was formed, This band, under the leadership of Mr, Eugene Harbach, is composed entirely of Junior High students who are beginning the study of in- strumental music. The marching band consists of forty-five instrumentalists, while the concert band is made up of fifty-seven members, The Junior Varsity Band took part in the Burnham Halloween Parade, and the annual spring concert, as well as the May Day and Memorial Day events. It is the purpose of this organization to provide these new musicians with the experience and fundamental band techniques which willenable them eventually to take their place in the Senior Band. MR. Last year they started a mural which is now being completed on one of the walls of the art room. ln preparation for their work onthe mural the students went outside and drew such buildings as The Standard Steel Works and the Post Office. These were then all blended into the mural. This year the members of the Art Club entered the l953 Health Poster Drive and have worked on many other projects, in- cluding activity and seasonal posters, ceramics, and block printing. ln the picture above the members of the Art Club are working on their mural. The Green and White piled up 67 first downs and carried the ball 263 times for l845 yards gained and only l38 yards lost for an average of 7.l yards per carry. The Steelers also excelled in passing. They completed 27 out of 58 attempts for a total of 862 yards and an average of l5 yards per completion. Although I6 seniors will be lost by graduation the outlook for the Steelers in future years is bright. The high morale and experience gained by the J.V. team has furnished an excellent foundation for future varsity clubs. The Steelers, as well as other teams who com- plete banner seasons, owe most of their success to the untiring efforts of the coaching staff. With their clutch hitting and airtightinfield, the team went un- defeated and took the Mifflin County Crown. This team moved to great heights under the coaching of Albert Brown, who had been the coach for the past two seasons at Derry. lt was the first undefeated team in the baseball history of both schools. Every man on the team roster practiced many hours to accomplish this goal and to earn the honor bestowed upon his team. To win the Mifflin County title the team had Belleville, a very strong competitor, to defeat. In both games with Belleville there was plenty of action. In the first Bob Bohn pitched a perfect game and during an extra inning Ed Royer delivered the timely hit which drove Don Ball Home for the Winning run. The other game displayed Glenn Breon's outstanding pitching. This game was the deciding factor for the title. The club came from behind with Breon's skillful pitching to clinch the Mifflin County crown. Wayne Bohn and Jim Miller led the club with a .374 batting average, while Glenn Breon, Ed Royer, and Don Ball were in the .300 category. Wayne Bohn also led the team in Runs Batted ln with I0 for his record. Ed Royer was close behind with 8. 1952 BASEBALL SEASON ' is B. D .H . S.
