Those three little words are the entire summary of the progress of the 1950 Cooper River Blue Devils on the gridiron. As they didnft boast a perfect record but the fighting spirit and determination they showed rank high in football everywhere, and we at Chicora and North Charleston can proudly say that we boost such a team that displayed these qualities. From the opening to the final whistle, the brand of football displayed by the Devils made us feel proud of them whether or not they were on the long or short end of the race. The Devils made their 1950 gridiron debut at North Charleston Athletic Field against Boys, High of Anderson who later went on through the season to win the State Championship-here is where the Devils lost to a truly great team. The next game was played here against Georgetown in boggy mud and drizzling rain, which somehow or other made the Georgetown Gators,' feel at home-results, a Georgetown victory. Following this, the Devils joumey to Florence to play the latter on their home field. Florence, who claims a split deci- sion as State Champs, won the contest in what was considered the roughest game the D e v i l s encountered this SeaSOIl. Afterwards, the Devils went to Co- lumbia to battle the Caps,, at their homecoming game in which its festivi- ties was enjoyed by all. They came through with a smashing victory, the first of the season. The following week at North Charles- ton, the Devilsv edged out Sumter, a Lower State powerhouse. Highlight of this game came in the closing minutes when the fighting Devil linemen held Sumter on the one-foot line for four con- secutive downs. The next week, the Blue Devils came through with one of their most out- standing victories of the season as they crushed Bishop England by 40 points at Iohnson Hagood Stadium. This made it tfie third straight win for the Devils so ar. Next Week the Devils', ventured to Conway and played a snip-and-tuck battle from start to finish where they finally held the victory margin by one slim point. Next week the Devilsv really cele- brated their homecoming game with one of the most impressive victories of the season by dropping the highly fav- ored Camden Bull Dogsn by 39 points. This game ran the Devils,' winning to- tal up to five straight games against three setback thus far this season. The next week marked the game of the year for local football fans. The an- nual grudge battle between the Blue Devils and the Bantams, in which the Devils entered a big favorite, but came out the victim of a major high school upset. IW Cooper River Vs. Greater Charleston Area Champs. The title this team hears refers not only to a won and loss record hut to a display of precision-like team work and outstanding sportsmanship as Was quoted by the sportswriters in this area. It is impossible to print on this paper the praise worthy of Coach Boh Clark and the team. For Words are out of our vocabulary, hut there is something that can he said. The sterling quality of basketball they displayed this season will long he rememhered here at Chicora. Team work was the deciding factor in the team's success. This team played as a unit, and no one man can he responsi- hle for its success. The top-notch ball handling of Cook and Gonzales. the sharp-shooting of Godfrey and NVhite and Tin- dal's control of the hacklmoard wound together to form an almost unheatahle team. These lmoys have put up the hest record ever shoxvn in the history of Chicora thus far and once again our hats go off to them.
