The 1970 Coronet Queens College Charlotte, North Carolina Sue Cashion, Editor Sherry Pittman, Business Manager Lyn Henderson, Art Editor Ruth Lee Hill, Copy Editor Sally Coleman, Photography Editor Contents Dedication...........26 Administration.......28 Honors...............48 Organizations........60 Activities...........74 Sororities...........90 Traditions..........104 Classes.............120 i While August of 1969 meant beach trips to many college students, it was time to get back to school for Queens Ladies. For freshmen, it was time to start a new part of their lives — a time introduced to them through speeches, FAC’s, roommates, and many other aspects of Orientation. 5 Anticipation . . . Orientation . . . Speculation . . . Frustration Registration . . . and so it was in August that the school year began. A year that brought issues of the outside world to the students of a small liberal arts college for girls. A year that joined tradition and change and challenge. 6 Senior Recognition Day, election of freshman class officers, concerts, Stunt Night, committee meetings, a poetry reading, and legislature meetings took us through the weeks of classes at a fast pace . . . but the weekends provided a welcome relief from intellectual endeavors and delegated responsibilities — or did they? Males appeared on our campus (in Morrison, no less), and we on theirs ... a first view of the Davidson Gentleman for many . . . a last view for some. Initiations, open houses, mixers and parties began the 1969-1970 social college calendar. Problems of world concern were noted at Queens with black armbands, Moratorium activities (and trips), and later with our second successful symposium. 12 ■auu With the changes in rules and the freedom it gave her students, Queens preserved her traditions. The Christmas season saw Boar’s Head, Telling the President, the Christmas choir concert, Yule Log . . . and, of course — exams. Another semester behind us and now Christmas vacation . . . diamonds, weddings, choir tour. 1970 brought us a new decade, a new year, and a new semester. Registration came again (the last time for seniors), followed by more eight o’clock classes, too many books to buy, too many assignments to do — and SNOW! Academic responsibilities were laid aside for awhile and Rush, pledging, and parties took place. 16 u1 Parents’ Weekend gave parents another look at the campus. Symposium gave Charlotte a good look at Queens, and it gave Queens a good, long look at man- kind — pollution, the war in Vietnam, the population explosion, birth control, abortion, and student rights — Man In Control? ihhhhh 20 Spring break at last — time to complete term papers and go to the beach. Senior testing and April showers . . . there are jobs, but where are ours? m With spring fever and class cuts both at their peak, walks to Freedom Park, picnics outside, and sunbathing took their toll With “The Friends of Distinction” we were caught up in the spirit of May Day, only be brought back to earth by the jolt of exams. Graduation for many . . . no time to look back. It was over all too fast. Every campus has its squirrels. 25 - ■ X: - • ■•'-'■ . I Keen insight into human nature ... a warm personality ... a willingness to listen . . . unending contributions to the college community . . . genuine interest in both faculty and students ... a rare sense of humor. . . For these qualities, and with respect and admiration, we dedicate the 1970 Coronet to the Good Dean, |_|0p| 0p Bsbb TRUSTEES Mr. William H. Barnhardt Mr. Irwin Belk Mr. John L. The Student Government Association, through whose actions the student voice is heard, includes under its heading six major campus organizations: R.S.C., Q.C.A., R.A., D.S.C., N.S.A., and Judicial Board. Its pur- pose, as stated in its constitution, is . . to foster self-government, administer rules of government, enact legislation governing student life, and carry out the program of student activities. Guided by Charley Carlock, the accom- plishments of the 1969-1970 administration included the creation of a five dollar assess- ment to be used to better the quality of cam- pus social events, the opening of the Morrison Guest House, the planning of the 1970 sym- posium, the sponsoring of a spring Careers Day Program, and the establishment of an S.G.A. Admissions Committee and a Library Committee, S.G.A. also worked to procure a flexible exam schedule and a full-time educa- tional, vocational, and personal counselor. Charley Carlock, President. Sponsored by the Queens student body and directed through the efforts of a specifically designated SGA committee, the two-day event featured as keynote speak- ers Dr. Allen Watts, nationally-known author and lecturer; Dr. Ralph E. Lapp, nuclear phy- sicist and noted author; and Ian L. McHarg, professor of landscape architecture and re- gional planning at the University of Pennsyl- vania. Smaller discussion groups were held both days, during which time selected panel- ists from the Charlotte area fielded questions on such topics as pollution and population problems, ‘‘control of the mind,” and the role of the democratic state in modern society. Classes were suspended for both days of the Symposium, and it was open not only to Queens students, but to the general public as well. Contact 70 Symposium co-chairmen, Susie Arnold, Pat Hess, and chairman, Ann Porter, talk with Alan Watts. Are we “the first generation without a future”, as Ian McHarg said? R. s. c. Resident Student Council, one of the most influential institutions on the Queens campus, is the author and administrator of social reg- ulations for resident students. The 1969-1970 Council was particularly concerned with revising and updating numer- ous portions of the rule structure that were felt to be of little value. Alterations in the system of signing out, research done on the possibility of private telephones, and plans for instituting unlimited hours were all R.S.C.- backed proposals. Carolyn Hall, President. 69 D. S. C. Day Student Council, the organizational representative of commuting Queens stu- dents, was sponsor for numerous highly suc- cessful projects throughout the year. Headed by its president, Cathy Howarth, the council sponsored the annual Black Friday Auction, the proceeds of which were used to finance day student scholarships. Other activities included a February bake sale and aid given to an underpriviledged Charlotte family during the Christmas season. Cathy Howarth, President. A member of a federation which includes over three hundred colleges and universities in the United States, the National Student Association on the Queens Campus serves both as the students' informant about the affairs of the nation and world and as the agent through which campus activities are unified. Selected students, under the auspices of N.S.A., participated in several conferences and conventions held at various colleges in the area while programs for the Web consti- tuted a portion of the on-campus activities of the organization. Left to Right: Butter Wilson, Harriet Carter, Chew, Lou Bracknell, Lou Banister. Lou Banister, President. Q. C. A. Branching into new areas of community service, the Queens Christian Association participated in a Little Sisters program in which groups of interested Queens students “adopted a number of young, underprivileged Charlotte girls. Q.C.A. also provided advisors for Tri-Hi-Y clubs and Girl Scout troops in the city and at the same time extended its previous interests in the Model Cities program and in the support of an orphaned child. On campus, chapel programs served as testing grounds for new forms and methods of worship while Faculty Firesides, an Inter- collegiate Retreat, and activities in the Web afforded individuals the opportunity to ques- tion, discuss, and learn of the world in which they are a part. The purpose of the Queens College Concert Choir is to maintain a high standard of per- formance and conduct while promoting an organized and pleasurable musical activity. Each year the choir participates in chapel services, convocations, Boar’s Head, baccu- laureate and commencement. This year, in addition to a Winter Tour which took the group into several southeastern states, the choir performed in a Christmas concert, a winter concert, a spring concert, in the col- lege production of “Les Nosrs,” with the Charlotte Symphony, with nearby college choirs, and on television. Audition is requisite to membership in the Queens College Concert Choir. ' Productions All productions at Queens College are un- der the direction of Mr. Charles Hadley. In a special play productions class, students de- sign and make sets and costumes for all dramatic productions. This spring, in conjunction with Miss Mee and the Dance Club, Mr. Hadley directed Queens students in an unusual mass media production which emphasized special vocal and visual effects. Mr. Hadley approves costumes designed by play production students. Mr. Hadley and Miny Bates operate the stage lights. 84 Students demonstrate lighting techniques. Travel-Study program Each summer Queens College sponsors the Queens European Program, designed to give qualified students the opportunity of a broadening educational experience not avail- able in the United States. During the summer of 1970, members of the tour program will visit fifteen European cities. While in Vienna, they will study art, music, and history at classes held in Kinsky Palace, and stay in the homes of Viennese families. Queens also sponsors a summer program at Pawley’s Island, S.C. The four-week pro- gram consists of independent study projects in conjunction with lectures, laboratory ses- sions, and field trips to local habitats. 85 History Club Mary Weed, Pres. TRADITIONS r ' r2' rfl, ; MU—IBMBBMHBMBBM Freshman Orientation This year’s Orientation was planned to help the freshmen become an active part of Queens as quickly as possible. Guided by members of the Orientation committee freshmen found the first days of college life at Queens filled with activities which included a fashion show, a retreat on Lake Norman, counseling meetings, and a Davidson mixer. The orientation period culminated with Friendship Night and Rat Court in Ovens Gymnasium as the sophomore class officially welcomed the freshmen to Queens. The first arrival. Obedient freshmen perform for the sophomores. him.i—leniigaM — Stunt Night Stunt Night was the highlight of this year’s Parents’ Weekend. Friday night, October 3, the students and their parents gathered in Dana Auditorium for a series of class skits pertaining to the theme ‘Tune in Tomorrow.” When the judging was completed, the Senior Class had won awards for the best all around skit and for the best actress. The Junior Class was accredited with the best visual effects, while the Freshmen received the award for the best gallery. Heading up this year’s Stunt Night were Denise Cross and Carol Crawford. Tom Orrow and his fellow Juniors. 108 A scene from the winning Senior skit. Dr. McEwen leads Processional. Senior Recognition Day Each fall Queens formally honors her sen- iors on Senior Recognition Day. The day in- cludes a special convocation with a formal academic procession and a speaker chosen by the senior class. This year the seniors selected Dr. Mildred McEwen who delighted her audience with reminiscences of Queens College over the past forty years. In the evening the Queens Alumnae Asso- ciation entertained the seniors with a dinner in Morrison Hall. Members of the sophomore class who had sisters in the senior class pro- vided special entertainment after dinner. - hii 109 Faculty and seniors rise for Recessional. Boar’s Head Celebrated during the Christmas season, the Boar's Head Dinner is an annual tradition at Queens and is based on a custom begun at Queens College of Oxford University, En- gland. Participating in this year’s ceremony were Kiki Phillips, Kay Autry, Polly Paddock, Ann Porter, and Gee Gee Powell. They read an account of the ancient custom to the guests and opened the feast by presenting the boar’s head to President Smylie. Following the dinner the Queens’ dancers, chorus, and concert choir presented a pro- gram of Christmas music and dance in the Charles A. Dana Auditorium. Left to Right: Herald, Polly Paddock; Candle Bearer, Kay Autry; Boar’s Head Bearer Kiki Phillips; Reader, Ann Port- er; Herald, Gee Gee Powell. Guests rise as Boar’s Head Procession enters. Yule Log Another Christmas tradition is the Yule Log cere- mony. On Sunday night during the exam period students gather in front of Wallace Dormitory, and, as the yule log is carried through the crowd, they sybolically touch it with a sprig of holly. The log is then lit and the holly sprigs are thrown into the fire — thereby, so custom says, shunning last year’s troubles. Glowing candles and hot apple cider complete the ceremony. Telling the President Originally this ceremony began during World War II when a student received permission to tell the President of her engagement. The practice has become an annual event after each Boar’s Head Dinner and provides an opportunity to relay to all the happy news of lavaliers, pins, or engage- ment rings. na May Day May Queen Ann Reamer 112 Maid of Honor Gaylia Moore -r With the arrival of spring, Queens girls re- flect the lazy happiness of the season in dress, mood, and activity. “Spring fever” traps each student. May Day, usually celebrated around the first of May, includes a picnic lunch, queen and court processional, Maypole dance, and a party in the evening. Under the direction of co-chairmen planning for the event begins early in the school year with the election of the May Queen and her court. Traditionally, the identity of the queen is a closely guarded secret until May Day. 113 ■BDHBnnnHHHBHnnBHBH Molly Hunt, sophomore Betsy Duke, junior Glenda Brown, senior 117 118 Eve Fragakis, sophomore Bobbie Calhoun, sophomore Sally Marion, Robin Lindsey, Co-Cahirmen 122 Stunt Nite, Kiki Phillips, Harriet Carter; S.G.A., Susan Moore.
