WRIGHT Whatever words one chooses — friendship, warmth, understanding, concern — they are not adequate in describing the personality of Dr. Elizabeth G. Wright. Dr. Wright s attitude toward life as a learning experience helps to quicken the students awareness of the world around her. Dr. Wright feels there exists both a challenge and an invita- tion in education, and she strives to encourage the same feeling in her students. Her attitude is best expressed in her Senior Recognition Day speech: “It is my wish for you that this invita- tion, this rebuke, and this hope may become part of your own senior recognition.” Dr. Elizabeth G. Wright 18 Martha Johnson congratulates Dr. Wright on her speech. Hurrying between classes, Dr. Wright finds time to read her mail. Advisee receives advice from Dr. Wright. Dr. Wright serves as hostess at Inauguration luncheon. Whether judging Stunt Night, leading student vespers, or counseling an advisee, Dr. Wright always is willing to give up her time to help others. In addition to being involved in campus activities, she also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council on Religion in Higher Education and has served as Executive Director and Secretary of the Board. Her hobbies include swimming, bridge, sewing, and the theater. Because Dr. Wrights enthusiasm for life and knowledge make her an outstanding member of the college community, we dedicate to her this 1968 Coronet. 19 Administration Men and women, Faces that challenge, Minds that strive to develop creativity. Senior Recognition Day Traditionally, the seniors began their last year at Queens on Senior Recognition Day. Held each fall, this day is especially planned for the seniors — an assembly program with a speaker chosen by the class followed by a brunch given by the alum- nae. Students gather in front of the traditional Yule Log fire. The Yule Log is cast into the fire. Yule Log One custom of the Christmas season is the Yule Log ceremony. Originally a pagan festival, the ceremony serves as a means to make readv for the coming new year. Each girl takes a sprig of holly, touches the Yule Log with it, and, after making a wish, throws the sprig into the bonfire. Christmas carols are sung around the bonfire. As the log is passed through the crowd, each girl touches it with her sprig of holly. Dean and Mrs. Babb, Dr. and Mrs. Smylie, and Mrs. Walker sit at Head Table during Boar’s Head Dinner. Boar’s Head This year according to a custom borrowed from Queens College, England, Queens students again celebrated the Christmas season with the Boar’s Head Dinner. A group of Madrigal Sing- ers, composed of faculty members and students, presented traditional carols during the meal. Three seniors, selected by the administration, participated in retelling the origin of the dinner and in presenting the Boar’s Head to the Presi- dent. Guests for the dinner were the new faculty members and members of the Board of Trustees. Margaret Barnes and Mary Rodgers Quinlan lead the processional at the beginning of the evening. Telling the President Envious students at Telling the President After the Boar’s Head Dinner, students go to Burwell Hall to the President about their newly acquired possessions — lavaliers, pins, and rings. The custom originated during the Second World War. At that time students went to Burwell after the dinner to participate in caroling and in giv- ing Christmas gifts to the staff. One student whose boyfriend was leaving for overseas duty, had just become engaged and wanted to tell the President about her ring. After she received permission from the Dean of Students, she “told the President.” Since that time it has been the custom for all students to go to Burwell Hall after the Boar’s Head Dinner to tell the President about their new possessions and their plans for the future. W eekends at Queens vary from a two-day tel- evision break to having Dionne Warwick in Concert for May Day. The Recreation Associa- tion provides weekend activities by arranging combo parties with the near-bv boys schools and by sponsoring Friday night movies. The two im- portant weekends are the Panhellenic reekend in the fall, this year featuring The Showmen, and the May Day Weekend in the spring. 115 Beverly Altman, May Queen 116 Mary Wain Ingram, Maid of Honor This year the student body moved to Freedom Park for a day of activities con- nected with the May Day celebration. To make the most of our opportunities was our motto, and we pro- ceeded to fulfill this objective with enthusiasm. It seems that our enthusiasm was helped by what appeared to many of us as “radical changes” year. The inauguration of Dr. Smylie brought with it the feeling of future gradual changes, especially in the area of student life and activities. Feeling very dignified, we donned black robes, and candles in hand, staged the tradi- tional “singing processional” the night before the annual Senior Recognition Day. Our day will remain in our hearts and minds as we recall Dr. Wrights appropriate and meaningful address. Her address and ideas concerning the open doors of the future inspired and helped to ease our anxieties. As we fast approached the conclusion of our senior year, each of us experienced varied feel- ings and emotions. Looking back, we could re- call the feeling of pride, as we filed into assem- bly on Senior Recognition Day, of enthusiasm as we continuously worked to make our college proud of us. Looking ahead we experienced anticipation for a bright future based on a re- warding past. 125 Anita Henson, Presklent janie Cotter, Secretary-Treasurer Diane Nemir, Stunt Night Co-Chairman; Myrtle Heery, S.G.A. We returned to school with a feeling of sad- ness that the summer was over, but looked for- ward to the exitement of being juniors and ac- cepting the responsibility as leaders in clubs and classes. We were met with new faces, but we missed those who had transferred. Orientation was a busy time for us as we made friendships with our freshman sisters and planned a year of active participation in student affairs. Hat Week kept 11s busy helping our little sisters find their beanies. At mid-semester we planned a party to honor the freshmen which was held on Wallace sun roof with entertainment by class members. Pre- ceding the Thanksgiving Break, we produced ‘The Cooks Tale as our skit for Stunt Night. During second semester, we presented our class projects: Win-A-Date and a contest for the cutest boy’s baby picture. At the end of our junior year we took our first steps toward becoming seniors when we moved to the senior section in assembly and sang “We are tired old seniors.” We are approaching the end of our college education, but it is onlv a beginning in our educational experiences. 143 Betsy Frick Adams Gail Cox Adams Ursula Alexander Judith Blair Anderson Annabel Andrews Brenda Gave Ballard Katherine Buchanan Barker Sally Morecroft Bates Harriette Lee Baumgardner Mary Ann Beck Susan Billman Marie Maxine Boatwright Peggv Hall Boone Sandra Joan Bousman Martha Louise Brewer Edith Paula Brown Mary Elaine Brown Mary Hildreth Brownstein Susan Webb Buchan Virginia Anne Bums Cheslie Caldwell Carol Winn Callaway Harriette Wallace Campbell Lynnda Gertrude Cannon Anita Lee Chapman Karen Suzanne Clayton Susan Thompson Cline Frances Elizabeth Cobb Ginger Anne Conkle Edith Moring Craven 144 mm ■■i Jennifer O. As sophomores we came back to Queens con- scious of the fact that this was another time of firsts and lasts, our first time as FACs and the last time our class would be together realizing that many would not return. We started the year off bv warning the fresh- - - O men of the impending doom of Rat Week. Ex- cited. we marched through the campus with “Cheer up, freshmen,'the worst is yet to come.” ith a “Ship Ahoy ’ theme the freshmen were initiated aboard the U.S.S. Queens. Sophomore Slump never had a chance as we were united by class spirit and enthusiasm. We broke tradi- tion by winning both the gallery and skit trophies at Stunt Night. Spring arrived and we watched our second year slip quickly past 11s. Parent’s Dav was held in April and we enlarged the activities bv in- cluding a Dolphin Club Show. Our party for the seniors in May made us realize that half of our college life was over and soon we would be juniors. 151 Mary Alice Andrews Nancy Kay Autry Judy Elaine Baker Lou Henry Banister Mary Elizabeth Barnett Barbara Elaine Baublits Virginia Lewis Beddall Shelley Lizabeth Benn Nancy Mae Black J Alice Gwendolyn Blair Gretchen Bodenhamer Helen Louise Bracknell Dorothy Lynn Bradley Kathleen Lee Brannan Martha Virginia Bringhurst Alice Melinda Brockman Mary Thornton Broman Glenda Harriet Brown Margaret Elizabeth Brown Irma Jean Burgess Mary Elizabeth Burry Hope Byrne Carole Jeanne Cameron Charlene Jane Carlock Harriet Cowles Carter Sue Louise Cashion Georgann Chenault Jane Scofield Chew 152 Andrea Lon ('ipolat Martha Bass ('lark |o Lvnn ('lower Charlotte Susan (Mbb Marv Aneita Coker Elizabeth Hunt Comer Laurie Connor Ellen McRae Covington Martha Carolvn Cranford Christine Ellwood Crawford Denise Roberts Cross Carolyn Thomas Culbreth Susan Eloise Darby Sandra Elaine Davis Vicki Lou Decker Deborah Robin Dillabough Deborah Dinkel LaNelle Marv Dominick M iriam Elaine Dougherty Renee Ravenel Dougherty Vicky Anne Duke Louise Ferguson Edwards Penny Anne Farmer Anne Howard Farrar Carla Catherine Ferrell Florence Ann Foster Margaret Louise Fox Barbara French 153 Nancy Elaine Fricks Claudia Sue Fuller Susan Adele Carman Elizabeth Hamner Gay Jane Ratledge Gill Elizabeth Love Goddard Jennie Elizabeth Goodman Sharon Kathleen Goss Mary Elizabeth Gunter Margaret Hackett Carolyn Coberly Hall Karen Hammond Nelia Anne Hankins Betsy Jane Hans ley Beverly Diane Harner Patricia Ruth Harriman Suzanne Harrison Joyce Hedgecock Anne Erwin Heeseman Darlyn Beaver Henderson Kathleen Andrews Hepburn Diana Wray Holt Louise Ellis Hood Cathy Lee Howarth Sarah Winbome Howell Sharon Lee Hudson Betty Claire Hulcher Nancy Edith Jennings 154 Roberta Jeanne Johnson Ruth Annelle Johnston Julia Virginia (ones Marilynn Keller Winifred Sterling Kephart Ellen Lenore Key Barbara Elizabeth Kilgore Mary Urner King Luna Frances Lambert Nancy Lucia Landstreet Marie Ann Ledbetter Linda Kaye Lee Karen Anne Lewis Anne Morris Lindner Joan Walthour Lippitt Nancy Virginia Long Anne Haven McAleese Mary Eathel McClain Linda Carol McCoy Mildred McLaurin Linda Jeanne McNeely Caroline Buford McNeill Sarah Gwendolyn McNeill Sally McVay Mary Caldwell MacPherson Susan Cook Mahoney Patricia Ann Marshall Mary Katherine Marvin 155 Elizabeth Faulkner Massie Susan Wallis Mayo Dayre Yvonne Merritt Susan Charlotte Merritt Sara jane Miller Kathleen Golden Mitchell Marilyn Helen Mitchell Catherine Parmley Montgomery Sallie Lou Moore Susan Lindsay Moore Vicki Winn Mooza Mary Morrison Sara Jane Moyer Suzanne Lee Murphy Judith Ellen Napier Linda Dianne Neal Miriam Mclntire Nisbet Margaret Victoria Norman Nevelle Arnold Owens Kathleen Horting Owrey Anna Elizabeth Oxenham Mary Laura Paddock Christi Parker Marguerite Alida Phillips Sharon Lee Pittman Nancy Jo Pooley Ann McKain Porter Nancy Hamilton Porterfield 156 warn Elizabeth Englar Potter Georgina Grace Powell Judy Lvnn Pratt W ench' Ann Pusev Dawne Cameron Pnshee Melinda Caroline Quinn Katherine Hawkins Randall Susan MacAulav Rankin Katherine Elizabeth Rawls Anna Bell Reamer Sara Ann Rhea Katharine Woodward Richards Sharon Jean Roberts Katharine Camden Robertson Elma Elizabeth Rodgers Nancy Neal Rogers J O Virginia Brandon Rogers Nancy Ann Root Martha MacLeod Rowan Jennie Mapp Rue Patricia Ann Ruffin Marie Susan Rutland Carolyn Anne Sakowski Susan Lee Schaeffer Virginia Sawyer Schenck Mary Bellamy Schlaefer Catherine Lou Schuster Jean Young Schutte Virginia Irene Schwartz Margaret Elizabeth Sebring Deirdre Ann Sheetz Catherine E. Jo Johnson Anne Nickell 160 Kim Reynolds, Vice-President Betsy Breazeale, President The Monday finally arrived for all us freshmen to come to Queens — scared, excited, anxious, thoughtful. At the end of a busy Orientation Week, we were ready to proceed with our first classes as students at Queens College. September with fun-filled Rat Week gave way to October with the inaguration of President Smylie. November followed with our participa- tion in Stunt Night; while in December we ex- perienced an impressive Boar’s Head dinner; Christmas Vespers, which our class planned; Yule Log and finals which practically made our lists of “firsts” complete. The semester was over. After a restful Christ- mas vacation that was begun with some sadness in saying farewell to our college friends and roommates, but also with impatient anticipation of going home to see our families and friends, we returned to our “home away from home” to begin anew and to continue confidently in our endeavors. Second semester we presented a successful Freshmen Follies, elected classmates to campus offices, and participated in May Day activities, while we also enjoyed the community life of Charlotte by giving of ourselves and our time to work with the young children at Thompson Orphanage and Morgan School. Before we knew it, final exams were over, and we were left onlv with memories of the year which had passed so quickly from our lives.
