We return, bringing life back to the dead campus. Reluctantly we watch the glorious freedom of summer recede, giving way to brisk fall. Del i ca te feel ers extend gradually, eager to bask in the Warmth of friendship and the independence of knowledge— Yet ever wary- poised to turn and flee. Time is marked in anticipation; Existence knows the moving hands of a clock. Thoughts will it to speed To overwhelming happiness and bitter disappointmen t. To laughter, tears, misery, joy, which prove themselves better shared than hoarded. The pace quickens, spinning— No time to catch breath, start anew. 4 ■ ■ 14 15 16 An encounter with Dr. Lovell is something be- yond a lecture on Robert Frost, a conference for schedule planning, or a discussion on the book of the semester. It is an imitation to learning, one that he offers so natural 1 that our response is un- consciousk mirrored in new attitudes and behavior as often as it is in study. Dr. Lovell doesn't need to take roll; students recognize the value of his classes. The are always a new experience—an interaction between a pro- fessor whose command of the material is too large for his small worn notebook and students who re- spond with increasing understanding. Without strain he draws from his experience and our own to illustrate his points. He relates a concept of Heidegger's to the expression “he turns me on' and a sudden smile invites us to share in his humor and in his concern. We find the extent of his genius awesome and his vitality for literature as well as life infectious. We find ourselves checking for his name as we sign up for a literature course and experiencing sadness at the end of the semester like the sadness of finishing a good book. Because he is a valuable stimulus for our growth and education, we dedicate the 1967 Coronet to Dr. Lovell. They are the strong supports In a complex structure. Under the weight of our inquiring minds They remain solid. Administration 19 TRUSTEES TRUSTEES Mr. John Akers Mr. William H. Bamhardt Mr. Irwin Belk Mr. Thornton H. Brooks Mrs. William C. Everett, Chairman Board of Trustees With an increased membership of twentv- seven full members, fourteen advisory members, and four honorary members, the Board of Trus- tees assists the Chancellor in administering college policy. Meeting semi-annually, the Board discusses Queens’ role as a liberal arts college, explores ways of increasing the quality of the education of the undergraduate student, and supervises the use of funds for the physical growth of Queens. A great deal of the members’ responsibilities involve serving on efficient standing commit- tees. This year an important committee set up by the Board was the committee to select a new college president. This office was vacated last year when Dr. Walker became Chancellor of the college. 20 Edwin R. Walker Chancellor Through Dr. Walkers careful planning, the college has grown physically as well as academ- ically. Ev idence of the physical growth he has promoted was the dedication of three new build- ings in the fall. One of these, the new science building, was named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Walker during the week of dedication activ i- ties, held October 2-7. Although his position requires his concern to be with the overall view of Queens, Dr. Walker also keeps personally involved in the affairs of student government through his membership on Advisory Board and through meetings with presidents of organizations and classes. 21 Dean Herbert E. Babb Coordinating the entire academic program, Dean Babb is in charge of developing and main- taining curriculum policies, recruiting new fa- culty members, and directing the scholarship program. Through his capable leadership Queens is able to maintain its high academic standing. His direct association with students this year included participation in the “How to Study” panel discussion and the “Questions About Queens” seminar. Dean Ann S. Gebhardt As Dean of Students, Mrs. Gebhardt’s main con- cern is the students successful adjustment to group living and to approaching womanhood. Her position takes her into every phase of student life, from student government to per- sonal conferences and the signing of SP’s for weekends. A constant model of the feminine ideals she upholds, she has a personal interest in each student and offers guidance during their years as students at Queens. 22 Administrative Officers Miss Catherine M. Dolphin Club One of the busiest and most talented groups on campus is the Dolphin Club. Through the clubs activities, members have an opportunity to promote individual skill in the area of aquatics. After several special coaching ses- sions, students try out for membership in the club. The ability to perform certain aquatic skills during these tryouts is the basis of se- lection. Each year, under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Magher, the Dolphin Club presents its water show, which nins three consecutive nights. This year the entertainment took place in King Neptune’s wonderland. Along with working on the show, the girls participated in the AAU syneronized swimming workshop. ■ Sports Sports at Queens cover a wide variety. The Recreation Association plays a large part in the provision of these athletic activities. The tennis team offers the opportunity to play ten- nis in competition. The team plays other col- lege teams in North and South Carolina. Bas- ketball is primarly a campus activity involving dormitory competition. The basketball team also competes with other schools in the area. Volleyball covers the area of dormitory competi- tion and college competition. Queens students who had developed an interest during the vol- leyball tournament on campus attended a volley- ball clinic at Appalachian State Teachers Col- lege in Boone, North Carolina. This year Queens had a representative at the golf tournament at Mary Baldwin College. Although there was not a regular team, many students enjoved playing on their own. Drama Club Mr. Hadley, Advisor; Jeanne Byrd, President. One of the newest organizations on campus, the Drama Club had an active year. Its main project was the production of the Shakespearian play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the fall. The play was directed by their advisor, Mr. Hadley. The pattern continued smoothly with one week following the next—until Senior Recognition Day, when dressed in caps and gowns, we were hon- ored as we have honored others. We became strongly aware of the beginning of the end, and our awareness increased with each announce- ment: “Only 229 days until graduation!” The renewed opportunity for campus leader- ship confronted us as we headed clubs and organizations and attempted to maintain an ef- fective program of student government. Up- holding a senior tradition, we succeeded in winning the trophy during Stunt Night. And then — perhaps during first semester exams or on a weekend away from Queens, maybe while toiling over those Placement Bu- reau folders or GRE’s — we began to evaluate our four years at Queens and to think, not with- out apprehension, about our future. Eventually our thoughts became less fearful, and we liked the idea of increased independence. Our plans crystallized. Finally we saw our many experi- ences at Queens as our beginning and heard the echo of our first awareness, . . . everything which is natural which is infinite which is ves.’ 118 Marbun Louise Allen Biology, A.B. The nostalgia of transferred classmates and last years graduation was quickly overcome as we formed a small but strong group of defenders for our new sister class of freshmen. Our spirit reached a peak as we hung from dormitory windows to answer the chants of the sophomores. Quickly we were drawn into the academic routine, now enhanced by a concentration of courses in our major. The adjustment to the new schedule was more difficult; it seemed as though we held our breath till Christmas. At last we were successful in Stunt Night Com- petition and left the auditorium with the prize for the best gallery. The dismal gray days of winter finally turned to the warmth of spring and lengthy discussions of summer plans, covering everything from I Europe to summer-school. Once again our exams seemed surprisingly early, and we be- come seniors, approaching our last year. 136 Jennifer Lee Allen Beverly Anne Altman J Jean Elizabeth Angell Dorothy Marshall Armstrong Janice Lee Bagenstose Patricia Lyndall Bagg Linda Clark Bailey Margaret Ann Barnes Leigh Cecil Barnett Sarah Elizabeth Barr Kenni Bea Beam Nancy Jane Bean Bette Jayne Benson Gertrude Louise Bero Penelope Jane Birdsall Nancy Ann Black Mary Louise Blohm Pamela Jo Blume Emily Gay Bodenhamer Jane Marie Bolide Miriam Elizabeth Bolton Julian Perdue Boykin Arden Jane Brannan Betty Sue Brown Mary Jane Brown Marshall Ann Brunson Mary Tolbert Bryant Brenda Kay Burgess 138 Betsy Currin Butler Deborah Jean Butler Margaret Ruth Campbell Cathy Jeanette Carpenter Paula Jane Causey Demere Ann Clarke Dana Leigh Clay Judith Patricia Corbett Mary Jane Cotter Brenda Kay Craw ford Sara Sprinkle Creasy Katherine W elsh Crockett Nancy Irwin Dashiell Caryl Ann Day Nancy Elizabeth Day Lura Augusta Deaton Mary Susan Dixon Beverly Blvthe Dobbins Jean Smith Dobson Patricia Anne Donley Patricia Ellen Dutton Patricia .Ann Eakes Elizabeth Molten Earle Carmella Lynn Earnest Elizabeth Dunkel Edwards Jean Craig Evans Nancy Elizabeth Few’ell Helen Elizabeth Fraser 139 Marsha Leah Gaston Marcia Thele Gilladette Sandra Lynn Glock Patricia Ann Gottschalk Sheryl Ann Greenwood Sallie Jo Guess Anne Jeannette Gunnells Jane Anne Hamilton Myrtle Wise Heery Anita Jacqueline Henson Susan Jeanne Herb Jane Davidson Hester Barbara Anne Hoare Nonie Roberta Holt Barbara Jean Horne Marilyn Jane Houser Ann Rivers Howie Verena Hug Sara Anne Hunter Mary Wainwright Ingram Beth Twining Johnson Martha Joy Johnson Lucy Ann Johnston Susan Jane Jones Valeria Anatoly Kaminin Virginia Alyne Keller Susan Jane Kellogg Suzanne Kicklighter 140 HH Annette Kvm Man McMillan Lane Laura Donna Lane Marv Newell Lawther Elizabeth Randall Lavfield Judith Lynn Learned Ann Miles Lefferts Judith Elaine Luxton Ellen Ann McCulloch Rebecca O Dell McDaniel Monique Elizabeth McMullen Pattie Sue Macon Man Anderson Maronev Sarah Atwater Mason Leigh Gillen Melvin Elizabeth Christine Miller Anne Gervase Moody Marika Sterrett Moore Ginger Kathryn Mull Judith Hart Munson Diane Lewis Nemir Elizabeth Parker Norman Bonnie Lee North Judith Ann Payette Connie Jane Phillips Nancy Lee Powell Donna Lvnn Prather Catherine Anne Propst 141 Suzanne Harris Query Coral Susan Ramseur Ellen Grant Reed Cynthia Ann Richards Susan Cameron Richardson Bonnie Jean Risher Alice Mae Roberts Mary Stuart Rodgers Johanna Pancost Rucker Susan Finklea Ruffin Lenore Saunders Patricia Ann Scroggs Ellen Elizabeth Seastrunk Karen Marlene Seay Pamela Woodall Spence Christine Alice Sprenkle Anne Lynn Stahl Nirmala Vinayak Supanekar Marianne Taylor Sarah Ebelue Tipton 142 Lucy Matilda Todd Nidia Beatriz Vera Candioti Laura Kate Yiernstein Shelley Emer W alker Sidney Kelly Walker Susan Rviand Winfree Sharon Adele Wrisell Charlotte Lynn Woodward NOT PICTURED: Charlotte Anne Fisher Rose Maureen Horak Martha Kerr Johnson Martha Carol McAteer Elise Langford McClung Lana (ill Owens Carolyn B. As FACs many of us helped the new freshmen move into their rooms, and into the college scene. Then the year began; the blend of the old feeling and the new was ours. We joked about sophomore slump, but as sophomores we felt security in being neither first nor last. We warned the freshmen of certain doom during Rat Week and ended it all singing “Next to the sophomores we love the fresh- men!” And they sang back! We provided a hillbilly rendition of Hamlet for Stunt Night, had the satisfaction of publishing the Student Directory, and initiated Parents’ Day, a new dimension at Q.C. Then suddenly it was spring with days as alive as they had been in September, but there was a difference. The door was closing on the sophomore year, and we watched it with mixed emotions. Freshman Class Our excitement of arriving on campus that first day last fall was colored with strong hesitancies. Unknown and unknowing, we met roommates with a temporary loss for words even after planning that first conversation so well. The surge of new faces in the next week was almost overpowering, and we were relieved to have classes begin. Eagerly we grasped the traditions of Queens as a part of our experience and made our own contributions. During Freshman Week we staged an attack on Barnhardt to show the growing spirit of our class. Boar’s Head and Yule Log gave way to the panic of our first exams which thrust us into our Christmas vacation. Rested and ready to begin a fresh se- mester we returned, already with a new confi- dence and familiarity. We were elected to stu- dent government offices and produced an un- equaled Freshman Follies. In May we approached our second set of exams with a combination of fear and con- fidence as a result of first semester s experience. Leaving for summer vacation we thought of our- selves as veterans—almost sophomores. 154 J Nancy Kay Autry Ann Elizabeth Bailey Judy Elaine Baker Lou Henry Banister Margaret Welles Barber Marv Elizabeth Barnett Barbara Elaine Baublits Virginia Louise Beddall Mary Wilma Bell Shelley Lizabeth Benn Nancy Mae Black Alice Gwendolyn Blair J Gretchen Bodenhamer Helen Louise Bracknell Dorothy Lynn Bradley Kathleen Lee Brannan Martha Virginia Bringhurst Alice Melinda Brockman Mary Thornton Broman Glenda Harriet Brown Margaret Elizabeth Brown Irma Jean Burgess Mary Beth Burry Hope Byrne Carole Jeanne Cameron Charlene Jane Carlock Harriet Cowles Carter Sue Louise Cashion Georgann Chenault Jane Scofield Chew Andrea Lou Cipolat Jane Ann Clark Jane Iredell Clarke Joy Lynn Clower Charlotte Susan Cobb Mary Aneita Coker Elizabeth Hunt Comer Julia Anne Connor Laurie Connor Ellen McRae Covington Martha Carolyn Cranford Christine Ellwood Crawford Carolyn Thomas Culbreth Susan Eloise Darby Sandra Elaine Davis Vicki Lou Decker Ellen Josephine Denton Deborah Robin Dillabough 156 LaNelle Marv Dominick Miriam Elaine Doughertv y O Renee Raveneal Doughterv Frances Ferris Duft Yick Anne Duke Louise Ferguson Edwards Pennv Anne Farmer Anne Howard Farrar Carla Catherine Ferrell Patricia Prevsz Forester Florence Ann Foster Margaret Louise Fox Carla Rae Frazer Barbara French Xancv Elaine Fricks Claudia Sue Fuller Deborah Keen Fulton Susan Adele Garman Elizabeth Hamner Gav Martha Ruth Gav Elizabeth Diane Giil Jane Ratledge Gill Elizabeth Love Goddard Jennie Elizabeth Goodman .Anne Moore Gordon Sharon Kathleen Goss Ellen Foster Gravitte Katherine Allensworth Grav Mary Elizabeth Gunter Margaret Hackett Carolyn Coberlv Hall Susan Elaine Hall Karen Hammond Nelia Anne Hankins Betsv Jane Hans ley Barbara Louise Hardie Beverly Diane Harner Patricia Ruth Harriman Suzanne Harrison Jovce Hedgecock Anne Erwin Heeseman DarKm Bea er Henderson Anne Louise Hendley Kathleen .Andrews Hepburn Diana Wray Holt Louise Ellis Hood Cathv Lee Howarth Sarah Winbome Howell Carolyn Elizabeth Howie Sharon Lee Hudson Betty Claire Hulcher Nancy Edith Jennings Roberta Jeanne Johnson Ruth Annelle Johnston Julia Virginia Jones Linda Kay Kaelke Marilynn Keller Jane Webster Kendrick Winifred Sterling Kephart Ellen Lenora Key Barbara Elizabeth Kilgore Mary Urner King Luna Frances Lambert Nancy Lucia Landstreet Marie Ann Ledbetter Linda Kave Lee Karen Anne Lewis Anne Morris Lindner Ellen Louise Lindsay Joan Walthour Lippitt Nancy Virginia Long Hollis Grey Lowery Cynthia Lane Lozier Anne Haven McAleese Mary Eathel McClain Linda Carol McCoy Mildred McLaurin Nancy Jean McLeod Linda Jeanne McNeely Caroline Buford McNeill Sarah Gwendolyn McNeill Sally McVay Mary Caldwell MacPherson ✓ Susan Cook Mahoney Caroline Mae Malinoski Alice Sargent Marquess Patricia Ann Marshall Mary Katherine Marvin Elizabeth Faulkner Massie Sarah Frances Mauney Susan Wallis Mayo Dayre Yvonne Merritt Susan Charlotte Merritt Caroline Huntington Michel Sara Jane Miller Kathleen Golden Mitchell 158 Marilyn Helen Mitchell Catherine Parmley Montgomery Susan Elizabeth Moody Sallie I jOu Moore Susan Lindsay Moore Vicki W inn Mooza Annice Willmott Morrison Mary Morrison Sara Jane Moyer Suzanne Lee Murphy Judith Ellen Napier Linda Dianne Neal Elizabeth Ann Nelson Miriam Mclntire Nisbet Margaret ictoria Norman Nevelle Arnold Owens Kathleen Horting Owrey Anna Elizabeth Oxenham Mary Laura Paddock Christi Parker Marguerite Alida Phillips Sharon Lee Pittman Nancy Jo Poo lev Ann McKain Porter Nancy Hamilton Porterfield Georgina Grace Powell Judy Lynn Pratt Elizabeth Harner Prewitt Wendy Ann Pusey Dawne Cameron Pushee Melinda Caroline Quinn Katherine Hawkins Randall Susan MacAulay Rankin Katherine Elizabeth Rawls Anna Bell Reamer Constance Hope Reigle Sara Ann Rhea Nancy Elizabeth Rhodes J Katharine Woodward Richards Sharon Jean Roberts Katharine Camden Robertson Emma Elizabeth Rodgers Nancy Neal Rogers Nancy Ann Root Martha MacLeod Rowan Jennie Mapp Rue Patricia Ann Ruffin Marie Susan Rutland 159 Carolyn Anne Sakovvski Susan Lee Schaeffer Virginia Sawyer Schenck Mary Bellamy Schlaefer Catherine Lou Schuster Jean Young Schutte Virginia Irene Schwartz Margaret Elizabeth Sebring Deirdre Ann Sheetz Catherine E.
