A couple in the Y-store over a mid-morning cup of coffee . . . camaraderie with the faculty and ‘ hello” for the stu- dents . . . how could we miss Mr. and Mrs. Shealy. They came to Queens, each bringing personal talents and interests and together became involved with the life of the college. Mr. and Mrs. Shealy have achieved an admirable combi- nation of career and marriage. Dr. Joyce Hayes Shealy is vibrant and never ceases to amaze us . . . especially at 8:00 in the morning. She has a quick yet concerned manner that motivates students to work and find that “extra knowledge” in psychology. Dr. Shealy received the A.B. and M.A. degrees at the University of South Carolina. She also received the master’s degree at Ohio State University and the Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina. She holds membership in several psychological associations as well as in Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi honorary societies. Her professional involvement is as active as these achievements and honors indicate. On campus, she heads the Lecture Committee and is responsible for entertaining campus visitors who come under its auspices. 1 ler excellent job in this area is indicated by Mr. Robert Speight’s comment that he didn't know when he had enjoyed himself more while visiting a college. Mr. Shealy, like his wife, is deeplv concerned for each student. Art students know this well, merely by the way he looks over those distinctive glasses and lets the student know she can do better. His professional experience as a free- lance artist in New York City along with his teaching ex- perience makes him a well-qualified head of the Art De- partment. On a “Coke break” in the art building Mr. Shealy can be found telling his latest jokes and puns to students. Outside the college Mr. Shealy belongs to several art associations and is well known for his art work. On campus, Mr. Shealy serves as the Faculty Club President and Coro- net advisor. The Shealvs’ personal touch contributes to the unique emphasis which remains at Queens despite its continued growth. As at home in the kitchen as in the classroom, the Shealvs serve dinners students do not quickly forget. Per- haps what we most admire in Mr. and Mrs. Shealy is their zest for living. Page Fifteen
