A TIME TO BUILD... Page Six A TIME TO GET ... As Freshmen we came a little scared, but anticipating what was to come . . . four years of growth for some . . . only a brief pause in the lives of others. In letters our F.A.C.’s had tried to tell us what Queens would be. The first day was crowded with strange faces . . . the game of ‘who do you know” . . . and a bare room unlike the one at home. For a brief moment we stopped to wonder what our years at Queens would bring. Later, a fashion show . . . a laughing bus ride to the shopping center . . . circes . . . 1 TIME TO LOSE . .. and “hi” from a girl we did not know made us glad we were a partJof Queens. We grew with the year. For the first time we realized professors were human ... in the classroom ... at faculty firesides . . . and at the Y-store. Strange voices would soon be familiar ones of people we would know well. The first year of confusion, wonderment, and fun was over, but three new years awaited us. Page Seven Our Sophomore year ... a real feeling of belonging . . . we were upperclassmen and our sister class was now the Senior class. The Seniors would soon be gone . . . we rushed into an urgency to know them. On the other side was a crop of new Freshmen. We yearned for their innocence and a sense of expectancy, but we had our own year to look forward to. For the first time we had a chance to question what we were accomplishing . . . it bothered us. With no closed study to stop us, the nights slipped into early morning discussions ... we tried to solve the world’s problems as well as our own. The answers were not easily ours. We came to accept Jello at meals, Chapel on Monday, and being in the dorm on a weekend. Screams, a shiny fraternity pin, and a push to the shower by eager friends were only a part of the closeness we shared. We came to understand casual friends and respect each person’s particularities as her own. A TIME TO DANCE ... A TIME TO EMBRACE ... Page Eight A TIME FOR WAR ... Page Nine A TIME FOR PEACE ... A TIME TO SPEAK ... Page Ten A TIME TO LAUGH A TIME TO LOVE ... Being a Junior was a time of seeing ... a time to grasp every minute with friends, professors, and studies. We could joke with a favorite professor one minute and talk seriously with him the next. Desire for grades alone was replaced by a sincere involvement in learning. We even stopped watch- ing the clock in some classes. Instead of wildly throwing snow balls at each other we walked in the snow alone. We still w ent to the sundeck, had wraterfights and sang, but now we paused to look more closely at the multicolored change Spring had brought ... a moist yellow jon- quil, a wrarm free breeze, an urge to go barefoot in the grass. The days sped by till “move-up day” held before us the promise and uncertainty of our last year. Page Eleven A TIME TO HATE ... 7 We were tired old Seniors” ... in many ways, but not too tired to make time for people. We counted the days until graduation, marriage, and a job . . . waited for a call from a boy now not far away and read BRIDES MAGAZINE. Mail boxes were searched not for letters from home but for job offers and graduate school replies. Sunday noon was one mass exodus to Hardees . . . then back to the dorm for a quick game of bridge, Monopoly, or Yahtzee. We had grown together for four years, and this last one seemed to slip by more quickly than the others. We treasured each day, not only as one that could not be relived but as one unique in our last year at Queens. As the year came to an end we realized that we had gained an understanding of ourselves and others . . . an understanding we hoped would grow beyond these four years that had meant so much to us. I TIME TO PLUCK ... ,4 TIME TO PLANT... Tir A TIME TO CAST AWAY ... AND A TIME TO REMEMBER ... Page Thirteen Dedication To Mr. and Mrs. George A. Shealy For their sincere interest in each individual and a constant aliveness that pervades all of campus life, we the students dedicate the 1966 Coronet. Page PouTteeyi A couple in the Y-store over a mid-morning cup of coffee . . . camaraderie with the faculty and ‘ hello” for the stu- dents . . . how could we miss Mr. and Mrs. Shealy. They came to Queens, each bringing personal talents and interests and together became involved with the life of the college. Mr. and Mrs. Shealy have achieved an admirable combi- nation of career and marriage. Dr. Joyce Hayes Shealy is vibrant and never ceases to amaze us . . . especially at 8:00 in the morning. She has a quick yet concerned manner that motivates students to work and find that “extra knowledge” in psychology. Dr. Shealy received the A.B. and M.A. degrees at the University of South Carolina. She also received the master’s degree at Ohio State University and the Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina. She holds membership in several psychological associations as well as in Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi honorary societies. Her professional involvement is as active as these achievements and honors indicate. On campus, she heads the Lecture Committee and is responsible for entertaining campus visitors who come under its auspices. 1 ler excellent job in this area is indicated by Mr. Robert Speight’s comment that he didn't know when he had enjoyed himself more while visiting a college. Mr. Shealy, like his wife, is deeplv concerned for each student. Art students know this well, merely by the way he looks over those distinctive glasses and lets the student know she can do better. His professional experience as a free- lance artist in New York City along with his teaching ex- perience makes him a well-qualified head of the Art De- partment. On a “Coke break” in the art building Mr. Shealy can be found telling his latest jokes and puns to students. Outside the college Mr. Shealy belongs to several art associations and is well known for his art work. On campus, Mr. Shealy serves as the Faculty Club President and Coro- net advisor. The Shealvs’ personal touch contributes to the unique emphasis which remains at Queens despite its continued growth. As at home in the kitchen as in the classroom, the Shealvs serve dinners students do not quickly forget. Per- haps what we most admire in Mr. and Mrs. Shealy is their zest for living. Page Fifteen Mr. Thomas Mason cools a pot from his newly-constructed kiln. Miss Eleanor Jenkins holds a conference. Administration The administration offers direction to student life within a friendly but challenging atmosphere. Conflicting ideas are presented for each student’s consideration. Opportunities for self-advancement are placed before the student. Academic stimulation is offered through class lectures, informal discus- sions, and personal contact between students and faculty. A concerned college staff works efficiently to make the college aims possible. Through student and staff combination of goals the student body lives in an atmosphere of cooperation. At Queens there is a unique feeling of personal concern in which the desire to grow mentally and spiritually prevails. Dr. Walker is pleased with the big news from the two Carols! Page Eighteen Dr. Edmund Weiant relaxes with a good book during his break at the Faculty Club. The Y-Store Regulars” relax at last and pause for lunch. Page Nineteen Board of Trustees Composed of twenty-four full members, nine advisory members, and four honorary members, the Board of Trustees helps the President carry out college policy and curriculum. Meeting with Dr. Walker semi-annually, the Board discusses the position of Queens as a liberal arts college. Members place primary importance on the quality of a faculty that stresses teaching as guidance to the under- graduate student and independent study as the out- growth of such guidance. The Board is responsible for appointing a President, Chancellor, faculty, and administration. It also supervises the use of funds for expanding the physical facilities of the college. Mr. H. H. His achievement as President, and now Chancellor, has been to expand the horizons of opportunity for each stu- dent who attends Queens. At the same time he gives his authority a personal air through discussions with the President’s Board, composed of presidents of classes and organizations. With a concern for each student and with a desire for excellence in academics, Dr. Walker has guided Queens to a position of strength among colleges. Page Ticenty-one Dean Herbert E. Babb As Dean of the college, Herbert E. Babb coordi- nates the academic program, is in charge of curri- culum policy, and recruits new faculty members. He is also in charge of directing scholarship funds to worthy students. Again this year, Dean Babb and his wife entertained the Junior class with an after- noon coffee. The college is indebted to his compe- tent leadership which has been a strong force in Queens’ academic standing. Dean Ann S. Gebhardt Mrs. Ann S. Gebhardt, as Dean of Students, helps students adjust to the complexities of college life. Having a personal concern for each student, Mrs. Gebhardt contributes to the friendly atmos- phere of the college. Formerly head of the Art De- partment, she takes an active interest in academics as well as personal relationships on campus. Her grace and ease of manner are a welcome guidance to the maturing college woman at Queens. Page Twenty-two Administrative Officers Miss Catherine M. Atkins Registrar Mr. George S. Here, members may meet for a temporary refuge from the many concerns and demands of teaching. The Faculty Club is headed by a Board of Governors and organized into groups that pre- sent books to the faculty for discussion. Faculty members relax for lunch at their Faculty Club dining hall. Dr. Daniel Zeluff served as our College Chaplain this year. Page Thirty-three Registration is just the place to get an extra ten minutes sleep. Academics The atmosphere at Queens is one of a free exchange of ideas with the classroom serving as a testing ground for these ideas. Through faculty lectures and student interest, the process of learning can be a worthwhile endeavor. Because Queens is a relatively small college, professors are able to give individual guidance to the student de- siring it. Such individual interchange of ideas on an informal level is a valuable part of Queens’ academic life. Bitsy Eubanks diligently prepares for that most important class. « Page Thirty-six Page Thirty-seven Our conscientious staff keeps the bookcases in excellent condition at all times. Teresa Hancock, President. Nancy Dorrier, Jane Mack, Stunt Night Co-Chairmen; Sally Markle, R.A. Representative. Senior Class Our senior year, “a time to keep and a time to cast away.” On Senior Recognition Day we knew the year of our graduation was not a distant dream but a soon approaching reality. We had many events to look for- ward to . . . these would he the times to keep. When Stunt Night came we ran away with the trophy . . . with three years of experience we were destined to win. We had witnessed May Day and Boar’s Head three years, only this last vear we were a greater part of the tra- dition . . . and held onto it. Campus leadership confronted us with the responsi- bilities of maintaining the atmosphere we hoped would remain at Queens no matter how much she grew. Senior Week was an outward sign that the year was coming to an end. It would soon be time to cast away our place at Queens. Inwardly, we treasured every mo- ment we experienced. We were not bitter that our four years were over . . . we had jobs, graduate school, and marriage to look forward to and we had an understand- ing of people that would long remain with us. We plotted with them to outwit the sopho- mores during Rat Week and helped the freshmen organize as a class. At Christmas we sent the freshmen cards and received Peanuts cards from them at Valentines . . . we could already see them becoming a working unit, rather than just a large number. We were also busy working with our class as we took part in “Up the Down Staircase” at Stunt Night. With a little bit of ingenuity and a lot of hard work we produced a 007 version of “From Poppins with Love.” As individuals we saw the year as “a time to seek” close- ness, purpose, and responsibility. Keith and Cathy turned our attentions to the boys in Vietnam when they launched “Operation Mail Call” before Christmas. In the spring we began talking about the prospect of practice teaching, the responsibility of leadership that elec- tions brought, and seriously contemplated our senior year. Move-Up Day sneaked up on us . . . we gathered our courage, walked to the front of the chapel and sang “We are tired old seniors. We were now ready to fulfill the opportunities our last year held. With an attempt to assume the confident air of veterans, we made our first return trip to Queens as sophomores. Our ranks were smaller and we found closeness in what we first called the New Dorm, later W.A.D., and then the Bam. We trooped to Albright, Wallace, and Harris to visit our spread out class . . . we didn’t want to lose the closeness we had known with friends our freshman year. We shared what every Sophomore class enjoys . . . the initiation of freshmen “rats” during traditional Freshman Week. We never looked quite so horrid as a group or had so much fun when we sang “cheer up freshmen . . .” We became a more distinct part of Queens and made others aware of our distinction as we held offices, dreamed up a skit for Stunt Night, and produced a Student Directory that actually made a profit. We waited through the snow-covered winter months for “sophomore slump” to strike, but when spring came we realized it had never posed a severe threat. Our sophomore year had been “a time to speak and a time to be silent” . . . and even more, a time to anticipate what was to come. September eight, orientation, the beginning of a series of events and impressions. It was our first look inside. We saw beyond wbat the catalogue had told us. We had to fit old habits into new surroundings as we spent the first week getting use to our roommates. We shopped for bedspreads, fit old things into a new room, and went through our first registration. Rat Week was the sophomore way of making us ‘official Queens students. Before it came we waited . . . quaking in our rooms. After it was over we laughed at “Next to the fresh- men we love the sophomores.” Stunt Night came and went “Up the Down Staircase with success and we won the Gallery Trophy. Christmas albums played over and over starting in Novem- ber. Peanuts . . . Boar’s Head . . . the Yule Log and ten days till . . . excited us with the coming of Christmas. More talent blossomed forth when we produced Freshman Follies and entertained faculty and upperclassmen. Later, in the spring, we took trips to the beach, planned our summers, and studied for our exams under a dogwood tree. It had been a year of beginning, with new sights, ideas, and feelings. Page One Hundred One May Queen Judy Wood Page One Hundred Two Maid of Honor Liz Bennett The May Day festivities this year began on Friday night with a combo party sponsored by the Panhellenic Council. On Saturday, the Queens campus was transformed into an Oriental Garden with singers, dancers, and club booths decorated as tea houses. The Queen of the May, Judy Wood, attended by her Maid of Honor, Liz Bennett, reigned over the pageant. The oriental motif was also carried over into the formal ball, held on campus Saturday night, with part of the dance being held outside under canopies. Billy Knauff and his orchestra furnished the music for the evening. The weekend of festivity and gaiety was brought to a close with a concert on Sunday afternoon by the Shirelles. Besides Chapel Vespers, Q.C.A. spon- sors other activities in which each student is given the oppor- tunity to gain a better understanding of herself and to e.vpress a Christian concern for others. One such activity is the tutorial project, in cooperation with the YMCA, which gives Queens students a chance to help culturally-deprived school children. At the annual W hite Gift Service in December, the student body contributes funds used to adopt a foreign orphan. To encourage student-faculty relations, Q.C.A. sponsors Faculty Firesides, which allow students to attend informal discussions at faculty members’ homes. Through the candy sale in December, Q.C.A. raised funds to contribute food to Christmas baskets of servant families at the Indian college of which Dr. Shipstone is President. A talk which aroused much interest was the one given by Dr. Anne Firor Scott on American Women-The Unfinished Revolution.” Few concerts were planned this year because tbe committee was uncertain of the completion date of the Fine Arts Build- ing. Rey De LaTorre, a classical guitarist, presented a series of selections from Spanish and Latin American Music. The Norman Walker Dance Company returned for the second year and gave another remarkable modern dance performance. Among concerts on campus were Marguerite Noel on the violin, Dr. George A. Members are selected on the basis of their ability to perform certain aquatic skills. Each year the Dolphins, under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Magher, give a water show several nights in a row. This year’s theme, “Miles of Music,” was an outstanding perform- ance which took more than the ability to swim. Some of the work that went to produce the show included selecting the theme, writing the script, making costumes and scenery, co- ordinating lights and make-up, and practicing hours before the show. The purpose of the Hand- book Committee is to provide students with a clear and de- tailed statement of regulations, organizations, traditions, and government of the college. During Orientation Week, freshmen attended discussions about the Handbook in order to become acquainted with the opportunities present and the responsibilities required at Queens. Swatches Swatches is a publication of the Student Government As- sociation designed to introduce new students to one another. The booklet contains pictures, names, and addresses of the entering Freshman class and transfer students. Miss Mildred Miscally, Mr. Ray Clark, and the editor work hard during the summer to produce this valuable publication. The booklet is an important part of the familiarity at Queens between classes. Eleanor Pepi, Editor Current The Queens Current appeared as a bi-monthly newspaper this year. Under the leadership of Eleanor Pepi, it kept the college up-to-date on current events and served as a means of interchange of ideas on campus issues involving faculty, administration, and students. The Current proposed the Wailing Wall which, through N.S.A., has become a means of communication among stu- dents. The Current received a First Class Honor Rating from the Associated Collegiate Press, a first for the college newspaper. Coronet The Coronet is the yearly publication of Queens Col- lege that strives to capture and reproduce the events of the past year. This year, the 1965-66 staff attempted to capture the feelings and emotions each girl experiences while at Queens, as well as the events important to the college com- munity as a whole. We attempted to find those elements that set Queens apart from other colleges; those intangible ele- ments which exist for each girl at Queens. It is our hope that these pages will stimulate your memory of the years spent here. Betty Thompson, Jr. Class; Dorothy Anne Cumbey, Honors; Helen Buchanan, Fr. Class; Jean Milroy, Soph. Class. Its main objective is to stress the intrinsic values and pleasures of reading, outside the class- room situation. Each semester, the com- mittee selects a book for special emphasis, makes it available in paperback form, and sponsors discussions, programs and displays to stimulate campus-wide interest. In the fall, the book-of-the semester was J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantasy, The Fellowship of the Ring, the first novel of the trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. The spring book-of-the- semester was Jacques Barzun’s The House of Intellect. I.R.C. also sponsored book re- views in the Current, arranged a series of displays in the library and compiled recom- mended leisure reading lists from sugges- tions submitted by students, faculty and administration. Page One Hundred Forty-eight Social Standards Committee The Social Standards Committee attempts to make social awareness and consideration, as well as proper etiquette and good grooming, an integral part of daily living. A fashion show was presented Orientation Week to ac- quaint freshmen with proper dress for various college func- tions. At Christmas and in the spring, the Social Standards Committee and the Dance Committee sponsored the Mistle- toe Ball and May Dance. Throughout the year, members assisted at receptions for the faculty. At the close of the year the Social Standards Committee nominated candidates for Glamour Magazine’s Best Dressed College Woman.’’ The committee completed the year with the publication of the campus etiquette book. Dolly Cannon, Chairman Donna Gray, Ann Craig, Dolly Cannon, Sara Barbee, Michele Prestera. Page One Hundred Forty-nine Panhellenic Council Shirley Ann Pierce, President Panhellenic Council has been an active group on campus this year with the aim of making sororities a more integral part of campus activities. The Council stressed sound scholar- ship, cooperation with the administration, and a greater un- derstanding between the sororities on campus. Panhellenic consists of an elected President and three delegates from each sorority. In the fall a “How to Study” program was conducted by members of each sorority. Those attending the program were urged to read How to Study in College by Walter Pauk. Also in the fall, a fashion show was held at Ivey’s with members of the different sororities modeling. A tiew feature this year was the organization of Junior Panhellenic Council, made up of representatives from each pledge class. Through this new body of Panhellenic, pledges were able to see the value of cooperative action between so- rorities. Panhellenic again sponsored open houses and a spring con- cert. This year the Shirelles were presented in concerted May Day Weekend.
