 i Halls lined with linen-filled trunks . . . bare bul- letin boards and dresser tops . . . quiet hours and exam breaks and signs of “Write Right for Wright!” We paused, though maybe for only a few minutes, and thought about the time we had so often hurried past us, about how quickly it had gone. We won- dered how much of all this we would remember when we could not see the girls playing Spite and Malice in the smoky room across the hall, when we could not hear the mixed stereo blare of The Su- premes and Johnny Mathis and Jack Jones. W inter mornings soon ceased. We opened windows, no longer ice-glazed, to the friendly rumble of lawn mowers and the delicious smell of new-cut spring grass. We let in the sunny shrieks and belly-laughs of school children on the neighboring playground. (How we would have loved to romp barefooted with them!) 7e saw full-bloomed one dav the thousand shades of pink azaleas around Blair Union, and then we looked up at solid blue sky, pieced only by freshly-greened oak limbs. These were happy days of long walks and bicycle rides, of four-leaf clover hunts, of guitars and sandals and cocoa butter. The year was ending— quickly, now. Page Nine M 4

We could preserve most easily, perhaps, the vague im- pressions of the big things, the pageantry and tradition and routine. But could we hold on to the unique, bitter- sweet in-betweenness of Sunday afternoons, or the squeak- ing sound of shoes in the heavy quiet of the library, or an honest talk with a roommate over a midnight cup of coffee. 1 he nine-month block was over now.
