It was a dark, un- usually cold September beginning. Hurricane Dora’s pelt- ing rain beat down upon the red clay and made mud that hardened on the soles of our shoes. Her gusts whipped our hair and creased our eyes and defied us to find pro- tection under wavering umbrellas. Blank-faced freshmen or blase upperclassmen, we began a nine-month block of our lives, a block often measured by “How many more days until . . .” Even at this beginning we were hurrying the present past us. We wanted to hurry and cleanse our rooms of foreign feeling: bare mattresses, prison-striped with gray and white; drawers filled with strange hair clips and lint and eraser dust; closets empty except for others' hangers, wooden or dented wire or cleaner-paper covered. We wanted to hurry and meet new people, exciting and romantic people—it would be a good year, we said. But we did not stop right then and look around and take the time to know everyone we saw. We hurried to the Y-store (we still could not call it Jernigan Center) to check our mail or to beat the crowd in line for books. We wished for a long distance call or for Homecoming or often for the summer just passed. But very much we wished the rain would stop its depressing downpour. Page Four At last it did. The puddles shrank and finally seeped entirely into the ground. A weaker fall sun beamed on our faded-tan faces and made us squint. New trees were planted, young trees that needed taut cord supports in order to root and grow. Growth . . . how this year meant growth for Queens. Albright ... a red-orange, growing skeleton across the street . . . plans forming to remove the secure old house near the corner of Selwyn and Wellesley and to erect a mammoth auditorium in its place. We noticed at first the pipes and spaded ground of con- struction, but it was not long before we shut these from our sight. We became so used to seeing the action of growth that we almost ignored it. Page Five But growth permeated too much of college life this year for us to push it completely from our minds. One hundred more freshmen this year . . . the promise of another hundred next year. Upperclassmen felt a long-latent awareness of the small and friendly campus and suddenly wondered just what all the new students and faculty and facilities would mean. Every step toward an impersonal replacement of Old Queens was painfully present in our thoughts: eating in shifts in the dining hall, seeing fewer empty classroom seats, waiting in large groups to withdraw money from the bank. We often talked about this expansion; it worried us. We clutched tightly to our tradition and hoped that our gain would outweigh our loss. Page Six Johnson! Goldvvatcr! We thrust ourselves into the rally spirit and the characteristically controversial campaign. We talked about it in our rooms and wrote about it in our letters; yes, we argued, too. Mock election ... a “whistle- stop’’ tour ... a can of Gold Water, an LBJ hat ... a remark subtly slipped into a class lecture ... a bumper sticker high on a mirror. By the first of November it was all over. We sighed, from relief or from disappointment or from resignation, and went about our business. But not long afterward our aliveness was reinforced. Sunday, November 22, 1964: after one year’s loss. 1 he assassination of Kennedy—had it really happened? How evasive and long-past it all was, yet how clearly we still heard the martial music and the clicking rifles and the military footsteps. That Sunday was a reflective day. We saw beyond ourselves and Queens College, and we saw a death-livened present—for a while, at least. Page Seven d Christmas came with cold, clear nights that made us look up at the haze-circled moon and wonder at its being and at our own. This time of year, perhaps, we felt the closest to each other. The Yule Log Ceremony first ushered in our Christmas spirit, a binding sort of spirit. We saw and heard and felt the same: familiar faces lighted by the popping bonfire and by small candles that quietly and unnoticed dripped red wax on gloved hands; hot wassail that seared the tips of our tongues; rounded mouths that caroled winter smoke which blended with the windy swirls of smoke from the Yule log; a high child-voice that spoke, “Oh, fire, burn away all evil!” A Peanut's circe in a knee- sock stocking . . . the clean, pine smell of the ornamented tree in Burwell . . . Christmas chimes peeling from the bright church steeple on Selwyn. We especially noticed the small things then, and we noticed each other. Page Eight W inter mornings soon ceased. We opened windows, no longer ice-glazed, to the friendly rumble of lawn mowers and the delicious smell of new-cut spring grass. We let in the sunny shrieks and belly-laughs of school children on the neighboring playground. (How we would have loved to romp barefooted with them!) 7e saw full-bloomed one dav the thousand shades of pink azaleas around Blair Union, and then we looked up at solid blue sky, pieced only by freshly-greened oak limbs. These were happy days of long walks and bicycle rides, of four-leaf clover hunts, of guitars and sandals and cocoa butter. The year was ending— quickly, now. Page Nine M 4 i Halls lined with linen-filled trunks . . . bare bul- letin boards and dresser tops . . . quiet hours and exam breaks and signs of “Write Right for Wright!” We paused, though maybe for only a few minutes, and thought about the time we had so often hurried past us, about how quickly it had gone. We won- dered how much of all this we would remember when we could not see the girls playing Spite and Malice in the smoky room across the hall, when we could not hear the mixed stereo blare of The Su- premes and Johnny Mathis and Jack Jones. Page Ten We could preserve most easily, perhaps, the vague im- pressions of the big things, the pageantry and tradition and routine. But could we hold on to the unique, bitter- sweet in-betweenness of Sunday afternoons, or the squeak- ing sound of shoes in the heavy quiet of the library, or an honest talk with a roommate over a midnight cup of coffee. 1 he nine-month block was over now. We knew that for us there would never be another quite like it. Omega . . . the end . . . 1965. Page Eleven mw Page Twelve Dedication To Catherine M. Atkins For her contagious enthusiasm that spreads over others’ solitude and apathy, and generates their aliveness, the stu- dents of Queens College dedicate the 1965 Coronet. A cigarette-filled ash tray and steaming coffee in a large cup ... a dry, slightly sarcastic wit . . . warm “hellos” to freshmen by name, and private jokes with upperclass- men . . . stacks of catalogues and schedules and registration folders. Catherine Atkins is first a registrar, but we see her also as an advisor, a versatile co-worker, a friend. She has a special knack of lifting spirits and breaking into loneliness, and she has shown us a frank and happy Queens. Although we may smile at her kind but sharp reproach for low grades, we listen, and we listen well. She says exactly what she means, what she thinks. There is no false niceness, and she praises but does not flatter. It is this frank friendliness that draws us to Miss A. She gets through to us, and, without particularly trying, she gains our respect and admiration and friendship. M iss Atkins was graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina, and received her Master of Edu- cation from Boston University. Leaving part of her heart in Boston, she came to Queens in 1960, and as college Registrar she has completely revamped the office and the registration system. She has looked to possible future use of IBM machines and has geared the office operations toward this possibility. College catalogues from every state have been gathered and arranged into a library for students interested in European programs or summer study. The problem of student registration has been organized into a smooth-running, effective process. But the long hours that students once spent working on registration could not just dissolve; they were transferred to Miss Atkins and her assistants who spend afternoons and nights working on pre-registration. Despite the tedious and tiring routine and the students’ interruptions to drop-add for the third time, Miss A. keeps her quick wit and easy friendliness. Miss Atkins channels her energy in many other direc- tions. She is a member and past ofheer of the Quota Club, a professional businesswomen’s association, and she works actively with the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae group. Because of her dramatic experience, Miss Atkins has learned much about stage make-up, especiallv the modeling of characters’ faces. She created a realistic Pinnochio for the 1965 Dol- phin Club Water Show, and she has worked behind the scenes for many of Queens’ stage presentations. Miss A. is seldom known to pass by an antique shop without brows- ing, or to miss Burke’s Law, a James Bond-type television program. Burke undoubtedly has thousands of fans who clamber to the sets each week; but how many of them would gibe with a grin, “Burke? Are you kidding? I watch it for the gold Rolls Royce! Perhaps the main interests of Miss A. are knowing people and living life, and she finds time (though we wonder where!) to develop these interests. d Page Thirteen Administration d Mrs. Joanne Sheahan okays that long dreamed about weekend. Dr. Daniel Zeluff signs for the use of Dana Auditorium. Dr. Joyce Shealy prepares a lecture for her psychology classes. Mr George Shealy will always find time to help an interested art student. Page Sixteen Administration The administration otters challenges, but it does not force the student to accept them. Although the administrators shape and present ideals, only the student can take these ideals as her own. 1 he faculty offers further stimulation. hether it is through lecture, class discussion, or personal conferences, the students respond and learn and produce. Aiding in daily decisions and momentary crises is the staff. These persons touch nearly even part of the college way of life and work for the comfort and efficiency of student living. It is through the cooperation and unified effort of these three guiding groups that the students of Queens mature both mentally and spiritually. Dr. Shealy and the Babbs intently watch the skits presented at the reception for Dr. W alker. Dean Gebhardt displays the projects of her Children’s Art Class. Page Seventeen Dr. and Mrs. Walker greet the students at a reception following his return from India. Dr. Edwin R. Walker President Th rough foresight and careful planning, Dr. Edwin R. Walker has shaped the growth of Queens and the edu- cation of Queens students. This year he traveled extensively through India, and he helped to broaden the students’ outlook by including them in descriptive accounts of his travels. Dr. Walker met informally with the President’s Board, composed of the presidents of classes and organiza- tions, in order to exchange ideas. Because of his respect for both tradition and progressive change, Dr. Walker has helped Queens move with stability toward the future. Page Eighteen Board of Trustees The Board of 1 rustees, composed of twenty-four full members, nine advisory members, and four honorary mem- bers, help Dr. Walker in carrying out the curriculum. Though the Board is organized into efficient standing com- mittees. it meets as a body semi-annually. Several trustees addressed the students at chapel programs during the year. Besides informal meetings, the Board is responsible for appointing the president, faculty, and administration. In addition to establishing or changing college policy, the trustees supervise the use of funds and the physical growth of Queens. Mr. H. H. Everett, Chairman Mr. John M. Akers Mr. Wm. H. Dean Babb is in charge of curriculum policies, recruiting faculty mem- bers, and directing scholarship funds to deserving students. I his year he and his wife entertained the junior class with an afternoon coffee. 1 his summer he will accompany stu- dents going to Europe on the Queens Summer Abroad Program of 1965. Not only are his competent leadership and guidance a necessity at Queens, but so are his quick wit and friendliness. Dean Ann S. Gebhardt As Dean of Students, Mrs. Gebhardt helps students cope with and adapt to the complexities of group living and of womanhood. Dean Gebhardt also involves herself with students by teaching a course in Methods in Art Education, and she takes time to visit girls in the infirmary or to chaperone dances. Her interest in each individual and her model as a true lady influence girls’ understanding them- selves and setting mature ideals. Page Twenty Administrative Officers Mr. George S. Or- ganizations draw individuals of particular interest together so that their viewpoints may be expressed, reinforced, and broadened, and they serve as a basis for association, com- munication, and entertainment. 1 he development of the ability to lead and to work cooperatively is an asset to every student. By working together, students also learn the importance of management and planning. Each one, whether a leader or a follower, has her particular place at Queens; for the committeemen and other behind-the-scenes workers are needed and wanted. Leaders of some of the major campus organizations discuss their various projects for the year. Page Thirty-four Betty Simpson conducts the polls during campus elections. Brenda Letter coaches a high school student in math as a part of the Q.C.A. Tutorial Project. Bobby White, Eleanor Judd, and Beth Garraway confer frequently about the progress of their organizations. 4 Hm W r Treasurers of classes, organizations, and clubs go over their budgets with Rosie Beaudrot, Treasurer of S.G.A. Page Thirty-jive 5 Beth Garraway, President Student Government Association The objectives and purposes of S.G.A. are the admin- istering of rules of government, the enacting of legislation, the governing of student life, and the serving as a central voice through which the student body may speak. The most significant of the purposes are those which focus on the contribution which Student Government can make to the college through its programs and activities. Among these are the Secretariat, which includes the S.G.A. library, Typing Bureau, S.G.A. Bulletin, and Symposium Com- mittee. The S.G.A. Calendar in the Student Center lists the various activities scheduled for the month. A com- mittee was established to evaluate the structure of Student Government. The standing committees of S.G.A. are Executive, Budget, Handbook, Draft, Campus Drives, and Independent Reading. Other committees were specially organized, as State Student Legislature, Curriculum, and C.C.U.N. Kathy Browne, Marty McDaniel, Jean Davis, Susanne DaVega, Rosie Beaudrot, Beth Garraway, Carol Cole. Page Thirty-six Judicial Board Each student’s personal acceptance of the principles and responsibilities of the Queens honor code allows all stu dents to live in a community governed by mutual trust and honor. 1 he fundamentals of the honor code are that each student be truthful at all times; that each student respect the property of others; that each student he entirely honest on all tests, examinations, term papers, and all pledged work as designated b instructors. The purpose of the Judicial Board is to encourage a spirit of honor and honesty for its own sake. Members strive to further the understanding and effectiveness of the honor code. The legislative body is composed of the presidents of the major organizations, editors of publications, presidents of classes, and the officers of Student Government. The body coordinates activities on campus and responds to the ideas and opinions of stu- dents. 1 his year Queens again sent delegates to State Student Legislature which convened in Raleigh in Feb- ruary. Page Forty National Student Association I he committees on the National Student Association Cabinet include national affairs, international affairs, cam- pus affairs, travel abroad, crisis center, research, resource, speakers, and publicity. I he aim of the N.S.A. Cabinet is to make students aware of the importance of educated woman s concern with problems not onl of her immediate surroundings, but also of her community, nation, and world. In the fall, an International Affairs Week featured Mr. h C. Crichton and his theme, “Where Is the Iron Cur- tain Today?- . An International Hootenanm climaxed the week. Soon, Lear n-to-Vote W eek was held, with Johnson beating Goldwater in the mock election. N.S.A. prepared a crisis center, and the travel bureau offered much assistance to prospective participants in the Summer broad Program. To end the year's work of the Cabinet, a studv series on “Great Decisions . . . 1965 was planned in conjunction w ith the national and citv-vvide stud} of this subject. Page Forty-one m Queens Christian Association Guiding students, faculty, and staff to clearer individual life purposes through study and worship is the purpose of the Queens Christian Association. Chapel and vespers have been an integral part of this organization, but this year many new activities were organized. For the first time O.C.A. sponsored Faculty Firesides which gave stu- dents an opportunity to visit faculty members in their homes for informal discussions. The tutorial project this year, in cooperation with the YWCA, gave students a chance to help underprivileged first and second graders and to contribute in a small way to the Charlotte com- munity. do climax the year, O.C.A. brought Dr. Dietrich Ritschl of the Pittsburg 1 heological Seminary to Queens in March as guest lecturer for the Christian Emphasis Week. Through- out the year in these and other activities, O.C.A. attempted to aid each individual in gaining a mature understanding o o o of her beliefs and emphasized the necessity of religious faith for each college student. Page Forty three Academics Academics It is largely in the classroom that the student creates and achieves; this is why, ideally, she has come. Queens en- courages a permissive academic atmosphere in which a student may learn through discussion, question, or dis- agreement, as well as through lecture. Each one must accept her responsibility as a student; hut individual guidance, if desired, is available. Even with increased enrollment and the changes accompanying growth, the close student-professor relationship is still one to be admired. Each Queens and Dana Scholar normally serves as a Scholar Assistant to a member of the faculty. An effort is made to assign them to assist faculty in fields of their interest. The most outstanding applicants for admission as fresh- men are chosen to he Queens Scholars on the basis of their high academic ability and leadership potential. 1 his year they took part in a seminar of English composition directed by .Miss Nancy L. Eagle. Dana Scholars are upperclassmen chosen for their out- standing achievement at the college level. I he sophomore and junior Dana Scholars have the choice of conducting an independent study outside their major or participating in one of two intermediate seminars. 1 he seminar on Greek Culture was directed by Dr. Paul B. Newman. Dr. Cary S. I fenderson conducted the other seminar on Latin America. It was decided not to have a senior seminar, and each senior Dana Scholar either did honors research in her major, or an independent study. The Senior Class Our senior year: a year of evaluation, of definite future planning, of responsibility, of giving to others an insight into what we have let Queens mean to us in four years. We have seen physical growth at Queens with two new dormitories completed and a third on the way, and with Ninniss converted into a student center. New traditions have come such as the Yule Log Ceremony and the Queens College ring. o o Wearing caps and gowns on Senior Recognition Day, winning a trophy at Stunt Night for the first time, practice teaching, going for job interviews, preparing for weddings— these and many more events were very much a part of our year. During Senior Week we were at last able to smoke in the dining hall during dinner while the underclassmen provided entertainment. We were honored by a civic group of Charlotte. As we marched from the chapel on Move-up Day, we marched into a new life—a different endeavor in mind, but we all realized that with each of us went a deep feeling of love. From what we have built and what has been built for us at Queens, we can continue to grow so that we may live in confidence and in harmony with others. The Junior Class We, the juniors, began the year by helping our sister class, the freshmen, to resist the sophomores during “Fresh- men Week. Only ingenuous junior big sisters could have plotted the hiding of Freshmen Peanuts behind the Dana wall! Later we sent them Christmas cards and entertained our little sisters at a pre-exam break. Our enthusiasm soared with the planning and publica- tion of the Student Directories, the annual junior class project. Singing E-Yi, E-Yi, Cheap!!! , we presented the directories, complete with phone numbers of North and South Carolina schools, to the student body. We were a smaller class than last year, but we worked hard and made fifty dollars profit on the project; it was the first time in three years that the junior class had come out in the black. This year passed more quickly than the first two, and the arrival of our class rings made us realize that we had passed the half-way mark. Move-up Day came almost too soon, and we took over the coveted Senior seats in the front of the Chapel. Although many of our friends and associates did not return to Queens, we gained several new members and remain the second largest class. The freshman class received their traditional treatment of initiation from us by acting like “peanuts” for a week. The last night of Freshman Week we rewarded them with hot chocolate served around an enormous bonfire. As sophomores we were separated by living in three different dorms, but we joined together for the annual Stunt Night, and, as a class, won the gallery prize—even though our acting was not considered top-notch. Our second year of college was really our first year for active par- ticipation in campus organizations and activities, and we were well represented by various members of our class. Being a sophomore was not easy, and the work was hard, but there were always week-ends to look forward to; we had the privilege of taking eight each semester. It was a year of wishful anticipation. The formal initiation was in the form of Rat Week—a week of sophomores’ subjecting freshmen to ridiculous rules and restrictions. But we sur- vived with great spirit and enthusiasm. No sooner had we settled into the routine of studies and campus life, than we had our first project, Stunt Night. Rising the theme, Hello Queens World,” freshmen put together a refreshing stunt depicting their impressions of the Queens’ world. The class had organized into a func- tioning unit! A now-familiar part of the campus, we confidently car- ried out our traditional obligations, such as sponsoring after dinner coffees and presenting Vespers after the Boar’s Head dinner. The climax to a successful year was the Freshman Follies. Gathering the talent of the class on one stage, the girls entertained the rest of the student body with originality and spirit. It was a year of forming a class out of a group of girls and of making this class a value to the school. Some students are in the mainstream and some are in the wake, but the importance is in mastering the relation- ship between the student and her school. But in 1964-65 the staff tried to do more than reproduce the main events. 1 hey aimed at the capturing of facial expressions and thoughts—the seemingly small segments of the college way of life. I here were little things that set Queens apart from other schools, that set this year apart from other years. 1 he staff hopes to spark the memory of each future alumna so that she can reflect minutely on this college year in a personal and vivid way. This new title was chosen for the following reasons: it is common knowledge that rulers have customarily used their signets or seals of ap- proval on letters and documents; since all of the material included in the literary magazine has had the staff’s ap- proval, the. name Signet is appropriate. Although the name was changed, the insistence on high standards and quality remained rigid. first Row: Becky Ballentine, Marney Collins, Martha Winders, Lin- da Folk, Caro] Cameron; Second Row: Mary Margaret Rogan, Jo Learned, Pam Grebe, Rhett Sapp, Kathy Browne, Kay Davis, Patsy Jamer son.
