Whose is that face against the glass at night. Reflected clearly across a desk—or what’s Beyond the glass, that makes these features show? I dimly hear your voices from a room Across the hall: what Congress did today, What Greece did yesterday, or only that Liz Taylor lost her glove along the beach. If it is true we gain by thinking back While keeping our eyes ahead, each scene is framed. By what we have not watched but surely know; Sometimes I hear the ocean roaring dully Over the sand, as if it asked a proof Of soil to which our roots can firmly hold.

Diana, maybe more than could Minerva, Guards our books above the courtyard’s shallow Pool; she trails our signs and paper chains While we pursue what other arrows reach. Part of learning is the finding out That what we know ourselves can make a difference Outside of school: exams are every day.
