Coronet nineteen hundred sixty-four J Queens College, Charlotte, N. C. Editor • NANCY MORTON Business Manager • BETSY HEESEMAN Outside the city by the night blue sky A smokestack letting out the shapes of clouds. And the sky, and clouds, make three colors of black. Our campus sees that blackness from among The lights of town—more colors than we know. Although in night and rain we do reflect them. Perhaps in sunlight too we sometimes watch The blue and rose light falling into dark. Red is the deepest color ever was Against a sky turned upside down with gold; The Japanese Maple’s crisp leaves spiral low Across the shadows, where we wait to catch The ten-till bus—on the low curved wall we wait. And talk an afternoon away behind us. i Whose is that face against the glass at night. Reflected clearly across a desk—or what’s Beyond the glass, that makes these features show? I dimly hear your voices from a room Across the hall: what Congress did today, What Greece did yesterday, or only that Liz Taylor lost her glove along the beach. If it is true we gain by thinking back While keeping our eyes ahead, each scene is framed. By what we have not watched but surely know; Sometimes I hear the ocean roaring dully Over the sand, as if it asked a proof Of soil to which our roots can firmly hold. W hen we have been 'acquainted with the night” We too have tried with effort to explain To any man in blue we chanced to meet Just why we were there, and how it was we were walking Out so late; our daytime words won’t do. iPTTmTTiy7njjjnmrr nTm yiTTMm fi n'qfr tnffWi Diana, maybe more than could Minerva, Guards our books above the courtyard’s shallow Pool; she trails our signs and paper chains While we pursue what other arrows reach. Part of learning is the finding out That what we know ourselves can make a difference Outside of school: exams are every day. At Boar’s Head Dinner and one night on the lawn Formalities give way to casual cheer; l he yule log will burn brighter every year If we keep singing as Russian children sing. Voices shaped but held as separate In a rhythm as of the eye and of the bone. 1 complained of Earth for having just one moon Until I once met Jupiter with nine— Moons are dispensed with easily enough If only one has room enough to turn And weight that places him and gives him time To find in which direction he should fly. Sometimes we have put aside our hooks and left The room, to walk on sidewalks we didn’t even See; there are some days that seem to threaten All that we own, that bring our even laughter Down to despair: and all we have are questions; We ask if we shall recognize the ending When it comes—if we will hesitate In the back rows, waiting to see if others Will applaud. Yet silence is a choice to make Held up apart from many long replies. And does not have to mean uncertainty. m Charlemagne was a roaring, gentle man Who scorned at first himself for emperor; Refused the stately robes of foreign kings, But clothed the Church in gold and dignity. He sent his sons and daughters all to school. Having an idea that men might live at peace If they could be taught fair play and tolerance; He understood Greek, spoke Latin as well as Frankish, Studied astronomy, attempted to codify The German laws. He tried to learn to write, Sleeping with tablet and stylus under his pillow So he could practice four or five times every night. Carolus Magnus scoffed at the omens of death And died one winter morning at nine o’clock. Carolus Magnus raged in a world of room Too dimly lit, three hundred years before Theophilus lifted the rich cathedral gloom, One thousand one hundred and fifty years ago. Today we have a chance to try again. ■ m Surely we have a better chance than his. The mellow light of autumn sings through rose- Stained windows still revealing sky and trees. Gray furry clouds hang over us again And fall on us and run to shallow winter. But April mornings will blow moist and cool Over the lightly green and narrow grass. The seasons of the mind keep sky and ground. And though the sky and ground may change, it’s what is Between them (looking up and down) that grows. m Sororities Dedication TO MARY FAITH CARSON For her assistance in helping us to find ourselves as individuals and then to lose ourselves in ideas and truths more enduring and significant than we, the students of Queens College dedicate the 1964 Coronet. Her presence is a welcome but disturbing force on the Queens campus. She has had the audacity to make us think, to make us doubt that which we had believed indubitable, and to ask those questions about ourselves which we do not like to answer. Yet, she has never permitted us to doubt without inspiring us to believe. She has never led us to question without helping us to recognize the right answers. Inside the classroom and out, her presence on the Queens campus has had a significant and positive influence. She joined the faculty just three short years ago. Within days, however, we all recognized the new Bible teacher. Miss Carson, by her pleated skirts and villager blouses, her familiar weejuns, and her cheerful smile. Prior to com- ing to Queens, Mary Faith Carson was graduated from Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and received graduate degrees from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education and Union rheological Seminary in Richmond. Her work experience included being director of Christian Education in Greenville, South Caro- lina, and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. During her first year at Queens, Miss Carson was seen most frequently in the library studying and preparing for classes. Her sense of respon- sibility to us, her students, and her dedication to teaching are reflected in every classroom lec- ture and discussion. Students in her classes strive to be prepared for her inevitable question, What are the issues and implications involved?” One student has remarked, We are aware that Miss Carson studies, thinks, and questions with us. As a result, her Classes are exciting experiences for everyone involved. Her enthusiasm is con- tagious, even at 8 o’clock in the morning.” 'All Face, as Miss Carson is affectionately called by her nieces, has been as valuable to Queens outside of class as she has been in the classroom. She possesses a rare talent of being able to be a good friend to students without losing her identity as a teacher. Anyone wishing to see her after class will most likely find her at any hour in her office, munching an apple and drinking coffee brought from home. She is never too busy to converse freely, simply, and honestly. This year both the senior class and the Queens Christian Association have had the benefit of her wisdom, counsel, and sharp wit as their sponsor. At the invitation of the senior class. Miss Carson delivered the Senior Recognition Day address in September. Who, if any, can forget or forgive her for making us ask of Polly Wil- liams and of ourselves, Is this then enough?” As she leaves to become the first woman candi- date for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in religion at Princeton rheological Seminary, she answers this disturbing question for us all. m Page Fifteen Dr. Edwin R. Walker Reflected in all aspects of Queens’ spirit and in each member of the student body is the competent guidance of Dr. Walker. Through his foresight and careful planning Queens has attained a unique quality which is a product of both his respect for tradition, and h:s courageous view towards the future. Page Sixteen Board of Trustees Acting through standing committees or as a body in its semi-annual meetings, the Board of Trustees advises and supports the president in conducting Queens’ program of Christian liberal education. Trus- tees are responsible for the appointment of the presi- dent, faculty, and administrative staff members; for the supervision of funds and the physical plant; for the establishment or change of policy; and for assist- ing in increasing the resources of the college. The Board is composed of twenty-six full members, nine advisory members, and three honorary members. Full members are elected to three-year terms by the Board, by the Synod of South Carolina, and by the Synod of North Carolina. Advisory members are elected by the Board, and honorary members are named from past Board members who have rendered particularly outstanding service to the college. First row: Rev. James E. Faculty Club Organized in October, 1962, the Faculty Club offers a comfortable and attractive place in the Stultz Build- ing where members may meet for social and intel- lectual activities. Here, a cup of coffee and a stimu- lating conversation may momentarily give professors refuge from sheaves of bradded papers and the con- cerns of students. Members of the Faculty Club sponsored three open discussions on current literature during the year— The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin, A Separate Peace by John Knowles, and The Feminine Mystique by Betty Frieden. Page Twenty-four Mr. John Alfred Holliday September 6, 1907 November 9, 1963 Page Twenty-five es c 1111 OH Cl ACADEMICS Academics Queens’ unceasing efforts to improve the curriculum culminated this year in many additions and alterations. However, with these changes and with increased en- rollment, the close student-professor relationship has been maintained. Emphasis is placed on individual responsibility and endeavor; thus each student is en- couraged to be creative in her studying. Several departments underwent revisions and addi- tions this year. Possibly the most outstanding addition was in the department of physical science. Queens received a $15,000 grant from the National Science Foundation, to be used in the field of biochemistry. Additional microscopes and laboratory equipment were also acquired. This summer the department of natural science will offer for the first time a course in marine ecology. The nature of this course will be similar to the unique study offered in marine biology, conducted during August at Pawleys Island, S. C., by Dr. Jack Fehon and Mr. Alex Marsh, professors of biology at Queens. Other changes were seen in the psychology curricu- lum with the General Psychology course being rede- signed to extend through two semesters and to include a weekly lab period. Other departmental revisions included an inter-departmental seminar in Interper- sonal and Intercultural Relations; new courses and activities in the fields of music, modern dance, history, and physical education; and a new Queens College Chorus, a supplement to the Concert Choir. These new revisions and additions are indicative of Queens’ emphasis on growth in the quality and the number of the courses offered in the curriculum. It is felt that at Queens a young woman receives not only a thorough knowledge of her particular field of interest, but also a liberal education which gives her a broad intellectual basis on which to build her future. Page Twenty-eight Mary Jo Millet and Martha Shell enjoy testing Mary Jo’s eye and hand co-ordination in psychology lab. Lab recordings guide students toward language fluency. An advanced lecture course is often taught in the professor’s office Page Twenty-nine New equipment from a National Foundation grant enabled Summer school marine biology students combine work and biochemistry students to initiate studies in atomic energy. play at Pawleys Island. Anne Rexford and Bettie Meade Peet prepare for a zoology test by identifying parts of a skull. Summer study and research experiences are shared with fac- ulty and students through the science seminar. N Lillian Cellar spends many hours of her week practicing in order to receive a degree in music. Students participating in the independent study program may often be found absorbed in their work within the carrels of the library'. Math majors find that calculators are necessary for solving statistical problems. Afternoon riding classes are often seen waiting to leave for the stables. Mirror at hand, Susan Burleson works diligently on her se] portrait. Students taking typing and shorthand often find themselves in Blair Building behind a typewriter. Activity-hour courses such as sewing are among the most popular. Jean Swart puts finishing touches on her garment. Close interaction between students and teacher characterizes this sociology seminar. Students in swimming classes gain a proficienc in basic strokes as well as more advanced techniques. Celeste Hodges patiently adjusts her design problem. Concert-Lecture Series An integral part of any education is that which is separate from the classroom itself. To enrich the education of Queens students and to provide oppor- tunities for becoming acquainted with outstanding lecturers and artists is the purpose of the Concert- Lecture Series. This year’s series afforded a diversified program of cultural opportunities. Early in the year, the col- lege community enjoyed an evening of Oriental music presented by Kimio Eto and a troup of Japanese entertainers. In February, Lloyd’s Marionettes were featured. Alfred and Herbert Teltschik, duo-pianists, appeared in March, followed by bass-baritone Richard Cross in April. Among the outstanding lecturers to visit the campus were Ralph Lapp, scientist with the National Space Agency; Brand Blandshard, noted professor emeritus of the philosophy department of Yale University; George F. MacLeod, renowned Scottish theologian and organizer of the Iona Religious Colony; and Harrison Salisbury, New York Times news correspondent to Russia. Faculty recitals and concerts by the Queens College String Quartet offered programs ranging from the most traditional classical music to the latest in con- temporary compositions. These concerts and recitals were held monthly throughout the year. Several art exhibits and a series of art movies added to the cultural enrichment of the campus. Among the latter were Bitter Rice,” Seven Deadly Sins,” Green Magic,” and Throne of Blood.” Students and faculty also had the opportunity to attend performances by the Charlotte Symphony, the Charlotte Opera Company, the Charlotte Oratorio Singers, and the Little Theatre. Suzushi Hanayagi, Geisha Dancer, and Kimio Eto, Japanese Kotoist. Page Thirty-four I CJ Harrison Salisbury, eu York Times Journalist Alfred and Herbert Teltschik, Duo-Pianists Page Thirty-five Freshman Class We came to Queens a little apprehensive but eager for what college held for us. Immersed in Orientation Week activities, we happily explored every aspect of Queens. In early autumn, campus visitors found us wearing pouches and tails and hopping like good ' Joeys” during the traditional Rat Week, which was changed this year to Kangaroo Week. Tests, term papers, and projects kept us busy, but we managed to find time for other things—dances, special weekends, and those blind dates! In the spring our class was filled with the excitement of presenting our collective accomplishment—Freshman Follies. As we anticipate our sophomore year, we are aware that Queens has helped us to develop as individuals and to assume our particular places in the college community. Although we were no longer threatened by the fear and uncertainty that faced us as freshmen, the decisions that lay ahead were great. As we looked back on our freshman year, we profited from our mistakes. We found time for fun too. We gave the freshmen a warm welcome with Joey Week,” reminding them that although they were the class of ’67, they were also the Freshmen of '63! As a class we participated in Play Day and the many tournaments sponsored by R.A. Junior Class This year, the junior class towered above the other classes at Queens—at least during Student Assembly. We held important campus positions, worked enthu- siastically and cooperatively in printing the Student Directory, and proved to be loyal sisters to the fresh- men. We have witnessed the rapid growth of Queens in the past three years. With the aid of professors and advisors, we, too, have grown. We realize that educa- tion is a personal venture that we have just begun. All too soon spring comes and the class of '64 leaves, willing to us the awesome title of senior and the privileges and opportunities that accompany it. Behind us lie four years of preparation and a beginning of self- discovery; ahead, a commitment to fulfill according to our individual capacities. In discovering the privileges and responsibilities of being seniors, w'e have experienced a year filled with events that will recur often as memories—don- ning academic costumes for our own Recognition Day, completing our practice teaching, seeing our class- mates conduct the Boar’s Head Ceremony and reign over May Court, interviewing for those all-important first jobs, applying to graduate school, and exchang- ing that pin for a diamond. We have watched unprecedented change take place during our years here, and we shall miss the excite- ment of being a part of the Queens that is to be. Yet w'e leave knowdng that each of us has contributed something of value to the college and that each of us takes away more than she gave. The faculty committee approved the seminars and independent programs, evaluated the students’ achievement, and assigned them as scholar assistants to work with members of the faculty. Queens Scholars, who were freshmen, had a seminar program of English composition directed by Dr. Dougald McD. Monroe, Jr. In the seminar, group dis- cussions were held on a series of Great Books. Indi- vidual projects w'ere carried out by the students to learn the historical, present, and future implications of various subjects. Sophomore and junior scholars, as of this year, worked together in either of two seminars. The first, under the direction of Dr. James H. Lovell, Jr., was a discussion of Alien Culture, this year’s subject being Japan and the Far East.’’ The second seminar involved the evaluation of world news and methods of com- munication. Following the death of Mr. John A. Holli- day, Dr. Pohlman and Dr. Elizabeth Wright conducted this seminar. Emphasis in the senior seminar was on the liberal arts. Each upperclassman this year was given the choice of participating in a seminar or conducting indepen- dent study. Through words and pictures, we, the staff, have attempted to capture the present before it turns into the past, thus enabling the Queens student to recall the many events of her college life. As the freshman matures into a sophomore, junior, and finally a senior, she finds that her place in the college community becomes more meaningful to her. After graduation she will reflect the myriad facets of Queens which helped her mature and fulfill her individual potential. It is our hope that this book will enrich each girl’s reflections. Members of the board are the student editors and business managers of CORONET, the Queens Current, and logos, the advisors of the respective publications, the treasurer of the college, and the Dean of Students. Publications Board Independent Reading Each year, the Independent Reading Committee selects an outstanding book to be read by the college community. An important objective of the committee, composed of both students and faculty members, is to stress the essential values and pleasures of reading outside the classroom. Active members of the Queens chapter of the Na- tional Student Association probed the question What It Means to be a Student’’ in four open forums held periodically throughout the fall. Members of the ad- ministration, faculty, and student body studied the roles of the student, teacher, and administrator con- cerning academic freedom, student government, and In Loco Parentis. Other programs sponsored by N.S.A. included a campus-wide study in Internationalism with Dr. E. F. Patterson from Davidson as guest speaker; a travels abroad seminar led by faculty members; and a lecture on Southern Education by Joel Fleischman, legal ad- visor to Governor Sanford. N.S.A. Social Standards Attractive personal appearance and proper etiquette are promoted by the Social Standards Committee, which until this year has been a part of the Social Committee. During Orientation Week the committee presented a fashion show to familiarize freshmen with the correct dress for various college events. Members served at teas and at Boar’s Head Dinner. In early spring the committee sponsored a Bridal Fashion Show. Representing Queens in Glamour Magazine's Best Dressed College Girl” Contest is Carolyn Keefer. Omega Delta Eta got off to a bigger start than ever this year thanks to our sixteen additions of last spring, four new pledges, a spirited new advisor, and Birgid, our honorary member. Initiation of eight pledges and a banquet marked the beginning of a busy fall. Our alums served us a wonderful buffet supper to celebrate Founder’s Day, and open house assured us of good times every Wed- nesday night. Work was begun on a strict scholarship program and money-making projects. We held a waffle break- fast for those connoisseurs of real ''home” cooking, and at our slumber party we feverishly knitted slippers to give as Christmas presents. Then parties and Christ- mas Feed put us in a festive mood for the holidays. Spring found preparations for rush in full swing. As we worked together to make our parties a success, we strengthened the bonds of true sisterhood which our chapter has always possessed. A great new pledge class added to our high spirits as we finished the year. With a feeling of great loss, we said goodbye to our eight irreplaceable seniors. Now with summer jobs, summer school, travel awaiting, and a beach party planned, we leave Queens with visions of our next wonderful year. Folk singing highlighted the Alpha Chi Omega Valentine’s Day Party. First row: Dee Ashworth, First Vice-President; Betsy Fuehrer, Pledge Trainer. It wasn’t long before Organizer’’ Garraway did it again—this time an October excursion to Crowder’s Mountain. Christmas season meant carloads of welfare children clamoring to get close to Santa. Traditionally, the new initiates held Christmas Feed, with Mama Wertz in her ever-present kitchen. A French touch was added in the fall, and a vivid first impression remains: a tiny, black turtle-neck sweater, a wide grin with a cigarette between two rows of teeth, and hands clapping to the time of the Castle Song. Who else, but Michele. New Ameri- can faces were seen, too. The bubbling Shealys became our faculty advisors, and Paula, Cindy, and Gail ac- cepted our call to come in and wear the ADPi pin.” Spring came and brought the excitement of rush. Our hard work and lack of sleep paid off when we welcomed the long-sought pledges. Jan, Grieve, Linda, Cilia, Judy, and Grade were elected to the May Court, and Sue, Dianne, Liz, and Chris were chosen for Who's Who. With holidays close at hand the pledges treated us to our annual Christmas dinner, followed by a party with Santa Claus. The spirit of Christmas continued through the giving of toys and clothes to a group of mentally retarded children. As the year progressed. Alpha Gams were repre- sented in numerous activities. At Davidson, Sandy was the ATO Sweetheart, and Nancy reigned as the PiKA Dreamgirl. The arrival of spring found Kenny, our former Miss Charlotte, in May Court. Spring always means a change and this year was no exception. Seven seniors were initiated into the alumnae, and a wonderful pledge class brought fresh- ness and excitement to us. Founded on May 30, 1904, at Syracuse University Established at Queens on May 10, 1930 Flowers: Red and buff roses When the school year ends, the Alpha Gams will migrate to O.D. for a week of surf, sand, and laughter; and later in June several of us will be going to the 60th Anniversary Convention of Alpha Gamma Delta. We welcomed our initiates into the bond of sisterhood as Linda put the umph into initiation. The banquet at the Manger brought recognition of success, letting Sally, Pat, Mary Ann, and Flaming Mamie Milton walk away with the honors. During Open Rush, the wise ole owl gave an extra hoot” when we greeted eight pledges. Nalini, our adopted Indian student, joined us and found welcome in our group. As the year progressed, Betsy chalked up Number Nine with I shall return and she and Tiger cheered the Wildcats on to victory. Our pride mounted as Tookie led the Dolphin Club through the Water Show, and Nancy edited the annual. Sue, Nancy, Gail, and Jean made our annual Christ- mas project of helping a needy family very reward- ing. Of course, we enjoyed our traditional Christmas feed as much as ever. The rushees came down, the bids went out,” and indeed the Chi Os did shout as our new spring pledge class of twenty arrived. Mette joined us and found a special place in our hearts, but her stay wasn’t long enough. In October, our Province President visited us and brought cookies for everyone. So that we could get to know the many new faces on campus, we sponsored an Open House for the entire student body. Initiation came in November for our excited pledges, and Marie, Nancy, and Linda returned to chaperone our slumber party. Thanksgiving gave us the opportunity to share with a needy family. Our alums gave us Christmas feed, but our bond was strengthened most by our Christmas party for orphans, complete with hand-made Santa Claus puppets. Spring was just as eventful as fall with Rosemary and Charlotte elected to May Court. Wonderful get- togethers at the house, marshmallow-roasts by the fire, and our fine new pledges make unforgettable memories of a grand year. As a result we really couldn’t have done with- out Linda’s lost cashmere coat, Kent as Sneaky Clause, and Becky as the Great Pumpkin. Christmas Feed was more fun than ever with the whole sorority working together on it. The commit- tees were slightly unwieldy with 26V2 people on each one, but with Whitfield as Santa and a program planned by Miss Carson and Mr. Hadley, how could we lose? Spring is a new beginning.” This was evident in the Phi Mu house with spring cleaning, blooming plants, and the start of serious rush plans. Once again Nostradamus brought tears to eyes and new pledges to the house. Bea, Sigrid, Liz, and Keefer graced May Court, and before we knew it the year was almost gone. But we shall especially remember our closeness this year: the surprise party for Jacque, the Advisors’ Appreciation Week, an Easter egg hunt for a group of orphans, the new Phi Mu social service award, the enthusiasm of the pledges as they continue to grow as sisters, and the sight of the sorority as a whole finding a new dimension to love, honor, and truth.
