I he blending of so many of our desired virtues and voids is o personified in you. You have made evident the wisdom and fairness which are vital to responsibility. We are amazed at your constant patience whether confronted with the trivial or the grave. 7 he feigned interest of many for us as individuals you have replaced with genuine concern, and we are grateful. Your eager willingness to help and guide, no matter how serious or small our problem may he, is welcomed as is the comfort of a meaningful friendship. l o you, Ann S. Gebhardt, whom we consider the epitome of all that is good in womanhood, we dedicate this annual. ■ m Dr. Edwin R. From a career of un- sophisticated fun, spasmodic study, and carefree spirit emerges the Freshman . . . looking ahead with eager anticipation and with fearfulness — — anticipation of a new, exciting life . . . fearfulness of one which is in- volved and trying, yet advanced and challenging. The Freshman enthusiastically enters this world onl to find herself confronted with many problems---------the fear of not being accepted by the college community, of not knowing how to approach new situations and people. Frustration mounts, nostalgic feelings arise, emn tions become sensitive. 1 he attempt to assimilate into the life of the college proves disheartening; fears of in- adequacy to meet demands accompany every thought. Gradually the Freshman discovers people with whom she can share her thoughts . . . with whom she has common interests, ideals, aspirations. Basis for lasting friendship is formed. Gradually Queens discloses the image of her way of life to the Freshman. She realizes that she can give of herself to the college and in this realization, slowly finds her place at Queens. Freshman ... a word which intimates an end o| a beginning, a new start ... a new person ... a j’ffiion ready to move ahead and to face the future with courage and determination. - ) Id Linda Folk, Secretary-Treasurer, Rhett Sapp, R.S.C. Student Legislature is a body comprised of representa- tives from all the major organizations, the classes and the three student publications. In order to avoid conflicts, the members co-operate to meet the students’ needs in various areas. Therefore, Student Legislature is respon- sible for initiating and passing legislation which is given to S.G.A. for final decision and action. An art film series to be sponsored by Px.A. or the Faculty-Lecture-Concert Series, several new election procedures, and the attitude of the campus toward N.S.A. are several issues discussed j by the student body this year. j There has been a revaluation of the organizational framework in every area to discover and remedy the over- lapping of responsibilities. Through this, co-operation and the individualism of each of the groups will be de- veloped more fully. STUDENT LEGISLATURE Draft Committee: First row: Sue Camlin, Chairman, Carol Cochran. These questions are revaluated and discussed by the Judicial Board and the student body each year. A recognition of the fact that students seek not only lor truth and knowledge through their intellectual pur- suits, hut seek also for qualities which strengthen char- acter in their college growth is a major concern of Ju- dicial Board. RESIDENT STUDENT COUNCIL 1 he various house presidents and the officers of Resident Student Council con- stantly seek to revise and make practical rules under which the boarding students live, eliminating regulations no longer relevant. Their main duty is to uphold the merit system by dealing with its offenders, in order to make the dorms and campus as a whole conducive to student growth and self-control. To be a co-ordinator between the resident students and the administration is the major purpose of this council. QUEENS CURRENT A new name and a new format this year made the old Flier a larger and fuller publication with many new features. 1 he new name, Queens Current, provides not only a psychological lift for the attitude toward this paper, but also expresses more clearly and more adequately the philosophy behind the paper than did the older name, The Flier. The regular editorials, the column announcing cul- tural events in Charlotte for the ensuing week, the added interest of students in expressing their own ideas through this medium, plus the new weekly schedule of events and meetings on campus and the general club and faculty announcements, all make up the new Queens Current. Mrs. Gebhardt and Su ann Morton, Chairman, discuss plans for Orientation Week. QUEENS CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION As a result of the recognition of some of the needs and questions of the Queens Christian Association mem- bers, made up of the student body, Q.C.A. cabinet has sought this year to try to help, but not answer, these needs. Rather than the more traditional program planned far in advance, the cabinet’s goal is to make the activi- ties more spontaneous, arising when the need is felt. The morning worship services and the panel on prejudice are examples of this thinking. Christian Re-Emphasis Week was also planned with this idea in mind. The theme, “What Then Must I Do?,” dealt with students’ feelings of helplessness in various areas of living, including group pressure, cultural values and foreign affairs. The week was not conceived to give solutions to these questions, but to stimulate serious thought and evaluation. Q.C.A. cabinet stresses the fact that it alone is not the Queens Christian Association; it is merely a body representing as many groups as possible, set up to guide the activities of the Association. . Dorm, class and sorority tournaments in basketball and tennis have included almost everyone. The traditional events have been promoted with enthusiasm: Play Day in Virginia Rose, President the fall, Stunt practices and the final performance in No- vember, and the popular Friday night movies in Ninniss once a month. After the completion of try-outs in the fall, all of their efforts are toward the annual water show in March, which is always a sell-out every night it is given. Practice and more practice is the byword. I his year with the theme “The Dream of the Ancient Mariner” the water was filled with swimming porpoises, pen- guins, spiders, whales and a big red octopus. The ship covering one wall and the Chorus reading lines from Coleridge’s poem made this year’s show one never to be forgotten. DOLPHIN CLUB Mary Quick, President First Row: A. Fischer, C. Steele, M. The words and pictures say what Queens is thinking, what it believes in, what it is—as different in as many ways as are the people who make the college. The lines converge in logos, and yet move out- ward, offering insight into the inward thoughts of the people, measuring the depth of study on campus, indicating appreciation of good literature, encouraging creative writing and thinking, excit- ing curiosity, initiating new ideas.
