.QUEENS COLLEGE LIBRARY CHARLOTTE, JN. m. Nov Campus (or a Socuml Century Dean Thelma Albright We cannot express the heartfelt thanks that we feel. Miss Albright, for the many times that you have given your time and effort so that Queens might he a better college; through your diligence, the standards here have been greatly raised, so that we are proud to hear the name of our college. Often your tasks have gone unnoticed because we were too busy with our own to recognize the significance and value of your work. We can only say now, as you are about to leave us as our Dean of Students, that your quiet dignity, your infinite patience, your willingness to listen, and your deep understanding will continue to influence us throughout our future years. Welcoming you in the new role that you have chosen, we shall willingly open our minds to the stimulating instruction which you will present. With these words of appreciation, we, the students, dedicate the 1958 Coronet to you. Dean Gordon W. Sweet Because of the loyalty which you have shown in serving us, Mr. Sweet, as the Dean of Queens College, we, the students, wish to make known our appreciation of your work here and our sincere regret that you will soon he leaving us. It is you who have often given us an incentive to effort and a belief in the goals of higher education, you who have often inspired in us initiative to work willingly and hard to attain these goals. Participating actively in many school events, vou have shown a spirit which will exert its influence upon us in the years to come. For your constant leadership and help, we want to express our thanks. We will miss you, but wish you all happiness and success in your challenging future work. With these few words of gratitude, we dedicate the 1958 Coronet to you. President . . . Dr. Edwin R. Walker A.B., B.D., Ph.D., LL.D. I he following month the actives treated their little sisters to a Flalloween party at the house. The excitement, hard work, and anxiety of pre-Christmas activities netted us one silver loving cup and an award check as winners of the Inter-Sorority Sing. A fat snowman on the door welcomed all the actives to the Christmas party, a big success, thanks to the hard work of the pledges. After returning from the Christmas holidays, we all en- joyed a party given us by our alums. Then we buckled down to serious studying for exams, hoping to keep the Panhellenic Scholarship Cup which we won last year. Pledge lessons, library studying, and weekly house clean- ups were not in vain as February initiation brought new actives into the sisterhood of Alpha Delta Pi. Early spring found us practicing for the inter-sororitv basketball tourna- ment. At the end of this happy year, eight Alpha Delts don caps and gowns and become alums. D., barnacles and all, sailed into port at Queens, her crew lacked only one aspect of seasoned sailors—the salty language. We anchored our boat in the campus harbor and, once ashore, worked our hardest at Rush Week until nine wonderful girls fell hook, line, and sinker for KD. Then the actives persuaded one last member to join our friendly circle—Kathryn Beich, and her presence has been one of the sweetest and most profitable our sorority has known this year. Kathryn and her tin cans kept us so busy that before we knew it, Christmas was here. So happy was our little white house with its bright decorations that, the day before Christmas feed, it burst with excitement—burst at the kitchen water pipes, that is. But it takes more than cooking in a canoe to dampen a KD’s spirits! Our Christmas feed was the best ever, even though the rest of the courses were eclipsed by Martha Reid’s appetizer—Harold Reagan, whom we crowned Kappa Delta Dream Man. Throughout all our projects and parties, Kappa Delta’s dearest friends have been the Maghers, our advisers. In fact, Pistol Packin' Jim has spent so much time with us that he considers himself an honorary KD and plans to publish a book telling of his exciting experiences on Sorority Row, where for two years he has worked as an undercover agent for the F.B.I. This has been a good year for the Kappa Delt’s. We’ve worked together towards our dream of a new KD house; we’ve planned together towards all our projects; and always we’ve played together, happy in the warmth of our KD friendship. Rush Week came . . . down the Mississippi on a Show Boat, to Athens for a Grecian holiday, and on to gay Paree to visit a French salon . . . our excursions earned us twenty-four wonderful pledges, making the Phi Mu Castle glow with happiness. Then we studied . . . But while we studied we shared many happy times together which we will never forget: Sunday night feeds . . . our own “Elvis” . . . the flu descending with a bang . . . eight boxes of Christmas cards and three boxes of candy . . . Wednesday night get togethers . . . the car wash in Davidson’s fraternity court . . . our president’s sparkling Beta pin . . . that ole Phi Mu spirit . . . parties with the Kappa Alphas . . . the pledges’ Christmas feed . . . the Can-Can . . . Homecoming and Mid- Winters . ..EXAMS . . . new initiates with the shining pins . . . new pledges . . . spring fever and Spring Frolics . . . the river . . . Europe-bound seniors . . . graduation and last good-byes . . . excitement over the coming beach houseparty. I he sisters parted in June, not only from one another, but from the little white castle on Sorority Row, saying a last farewell. But the times we shared together in 1957-1958 in Phi Mu’s bond will never be forgotten. And now, the names and faces in Phi Mu will change, but the sisterhood goes on forever, unbroken. Rush Week approaching . . . Washing cars at Davidson was fun and profitable. Our little Phi Mu Castle in the snow.
