This hundred years has seen Queens grow physically, academically, and spiritually. She has progressed from a small female institute to a well-known liberal arts college for women. Proud to share in this heritage, prouder still to offer a record of that growth, we present Queens in her grace, her beauty, her traditions, and her aspirations. . . . 1869 Diploma . . . 1956 Diploma m emonum Dr. f. Russell Boner 1901 - 1956 In the fall of 1956 Queens suffered the loss of a great friend and leader in the death of Dr. |. Russell Boner, professor of economics. In three short years Dr. Boner had served Queens in countless ways and left behind him many accomplishments. Among other things, he helped in working out the new curriculum and set up the procedure for the wise expenditure of a large fund that had been given to the college for new library books. In his own field of study he succeeded in improving the courses to such an extent that Queens came to have an outstanding economics department for a small liberal arts college. To those of us who were not here before he came, it seemed that he must have always been here as part of the life and work of Queens. Such was the strength ol his inlluence in many phases of campus life. We recall his sense of humor, the kindness that he showed us, the long patient hours spent in teaching us, his brilliant lectures which made his subjects interesting and alive. We shall remember him as a professor and active participant in the life of the college, as well as a kind friend who was gennineb concerned about our problems both in class and out. the Past and in the Future . . . Knowledge Leadership The Arts Social Life T raditions Dr. Edwin R. Walker, A.B., B.D., Ph.D. Queens is now entering her second century of education. It is to the advantage of the college that she has as her president and leader Dr. Walker. He is a scholar, a liberal, and a gentleman of quiet and unassuming friendliness. These qualities have won the loyalty and admiration of the students, faculty, and community. His devotion to the present and the future Queens intensifies the respect that she has for him. “What we are to be, we are now becoming.” Board of Trustees Mr. II. H. Everett, Chairman Charlotte, N. MC4M Panhellenic Counci rhe Panhellenic Council began the Centennial Year by taking part in Orientation Week. This was followed by Rush Week, Octo- ber 14-19. All pledge services were held on October 20. To make the after-dinner coffee hour more enjoyable, each week a ten-year period of Queens’ history was represented in costumes of the decade. A special after-dinner coffee was given by the Council during Hos- pitality W eek End. All organizations on the campus had an oppor- tunity to serve after-dinner coffee. Panhellenic Workshop, held in the fall, was attended by all sorority members. At this time an evalu- ation of rush rules was made. This proved to be of value for each sorority for future use. The annual Panhellenic Dance was held March 3. The dance was preceded by individual sorority initiation banquets. Dr. Charles Richardson, a member of Kappa Sigma fra- ternity, designed the pin and organized the basic ritual and ceremony. The Theta Gamma Chapter of Chi Omega was established at Queens College in February, 1928. 1 here were twenty-one charter members of this chapter. Among the many achievements of Chi Omega are the Greek Theatre, which was presented to the Uni- versity of Arkansas in 1930; the National Achievement Award, which is presented each year to an outstanding woman in one of many fields; and the Service Fund. On this campus Chi Omega participates in various ac- tivities such as charitable organizations, inter-sorority competitive sports, and social functions. Our Gamma Gamma Chapter came to Queens campus in 1929. There are now eighty-two national chap- ters of Phi Mu fraternity. For several years the mem- bers have made visits to the Methodist I lome and made holiday tray favors for the children’s ward of the Good Samaritan Hospital. The Alexander Home children are given an annual Easter Egg Hunt. In 1956 the chapter was honored as the outstanding Phi Mu Chapter of its district. Weeks of preparation and planning finally end, and the dreams of many people are realized as the boys don their tuxedos and the girls their formals and all make their wav to Ovens Gymnasium for an evening of J ' o dancing and enjoyment. After greeting people in the receiving line, the couple turns to see the ballroom gaily decorated to emphasize the theme for the ball. A noted orchestra is secured for the gala affair, and the strains of music create a dreamy atmosphere as the floor is filled with many happy dancers. Refreshments are served during the evening and entertainment is planned for the intermission. Often couples rest their weary feet dur- ing the course of the evening while others take time out to visit with friends. Faculty members are present to add to the joy of the occasion. A figure is formed by those sponsoring the dance—the Social Committee at Christmas and the Panhellenic Council in the spring. Time passes all too quickly and the music ceases. After the dance the sororities entertain at open house; then an exciting and important evening comes to a happy close. . . . others take time out to visit with friends Social Committee rhe Social Committee, headed bv Betty Gray, strives to create the best standards tor daily living. It is the duty of the Social Com- mittee to promote an integrated campus social program which offers to all students oppor- tunities for social activity. 1 bis group acts as host to visitors on the campus.
