Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1956 volume:

I am Queens College. I have been watching Queens girls since before Henry Ford cranked his first Model T. I remember well the class of “56 —the frightened freshmen with all their baggage, their confusion as they registered, and their bright, starry eyes and smiling faces as they began their first year of college. Yes, I have watched them grow older and more beautiful. As sophomores I laughed with them at Stunt Night and watched them prepare for those “big weekends. I tried to speak to them through the voices of the faculty. I beamed with pride as my girls took their seats in the balcony of Ninniss to return as juniors the next year. The starry- eyed look had left my girls’ eyes and one of determination and hard work took its place. Alas, four years go by so quickly! I felt a little sad as I watched my girls on Senior Recognition Day. As Senior Week comes I cry a little because the end is so near and I have become so attached to my girls. Commencement is finally here, and I am happy once more. I like the confident manner of those frightened girls of four years ago. Page Twenty-four Panhellenic Council The Freshmen learn how the Queens dress. Fun at Frida1 night coffee. m Let's do something different for the Spring Dance. The Panhellenic Council of Queens College this year centered its activities around the theme “A Gracious Queen.” The Council began presenting the theme to the school h sponsoring a freshman assembly. During this assembly the Council presented a lash- ion show pointing out “what the w ell-dressed Queen wears “where. Particular attention was paid in this meeting to the duties of the perfect hostess and the correct use ol the various pieces ol silver. Panhellenic Council this year planned to make the Friday night coffees more enjoyable bv having a holiday coffee each month. All organizations on the campus had an opportunity to sene altcr-d nner coffee. Rush w 7eek first semester was held Octo1 er 24-29. All pledge services were held on October 30. In an effort to nnke Panhellenic Workshop more valuable to the individual member and the sorority, the date was changed to early fall. This year the Council secured for j 7 O its main speaker Mrs. Julia Fuqua Ober, a past National President of Kappa Delta Sorority. The annual progressive dinner which Panhellenic Council sponsors for the faculty was held in the spring. Each sorority served a separate course, and the members of that sorority served as hostesses. All faculty members were invited to this dinner and were urged to bring their husbands and wives. O O A need has long been seen on campus for the training of I Iospitalitv W eekend host- esses. Panhellenic Council volunteered to undertake this training for this year. The first training program was held in October. 1 he Council tried to instruct the hostesses in all phases of their work so that they could show to their guests the real Queens. The Spring Dance week-end was held after Easter. An informal dance, a picnic, and the formal dance were included in the big w'eek-end. Panhellenic Council is composed of a president and twro members from each sorority —the president and a member at large. The Coronet 1956 The Coronet Staff proudly presents the 1956 Coronet. We hope you like it, because it is especially for vou. We have tried to recapture and present your carefree college days at Queens. As February rolled around we all heaved a sigh of relief as we saw the last of the annual turned into the printer and engraver. No more deadlines to meet, schedules for pictures, pounding the pave- ment for ads, or trying to stretch the budget. Our J O O worries were over—at least until the proofs came back and the bills showed up. The Editor an d Staff would like to thank the faculty and students who worked so hard and co- operated so beautifully with us to make this year- book possible. Especially, would we like to express our appreciation to Mr. Price Coursey of the Charlotte Engraving Company, whose inspiration was so desperately needed; Mr. Harrie Keck of the Observer Printing House, who was so patient and elhcient in getting the printed matter to the press; Mr. Boh Welsh of the Bob Welsh Studio, who gave his time so generously in photographing all group pictures and the May Court; Mr. A. F. Smith of Smith Studios in Raleigh, who made the class pictures; and, last but by no means least, Mrs. Cumming and Miss Miscally, without whom the yearbook could not have been possible.
