. - ' - , .! III Ann Golden, Editor-in-Chief Ann Mauldin, Business Manager Jrv- THE SEniOH CLHS5 OF 0UEEI1S COLLEGE Queens College commemorates the name and ideals of Queens Museum, a classical school established in Charlotte in 1766 and so- called in honor of Queen Charlotte of England. Disallowed a charter by the Crown, its trustees and their descendants answered sometime later by making it a matter of record that there be incorporated in the Constitution of the United States the existing “Education Clause”. Serving as a hospital during the Revolutionary war and re-christened Liberty Hall after the American colonies were free, the school at the Brevard Davidson place (Third street and South Tryon—southward from Independence Square, “on the left”) was closed about 1790. Some thirty years later—1821, to be exact—in this same locality, on the James H. Carson lot at 913 South Tryon, we find the Charlotte Male and Female Academy, which we may regard as a sort of continuation of Queens Museum. This school was at that time in need of a new building. A quoted subscription form, allowing 10% discount for pre- paid pledges, appears in the 1903 “Edelweiss” (College Annual). The exact date cannot be found, but, sometime prior to 1840, the Academy was divided: the Female Academy was transferred to College and Ninth streets and the Male Academy to North Davidson and Ninth streets. It was to continue and improve the Female Academy that a stock company in 1855-56 employed a Mr. Williams to erect the “Italian Villa’1 building which Dr. and Mrs. Burwell were invited to preside over in 1857. From 1857 to 1912, under the titles of The Charlotte Female Institute’’ and “The Presbyterian College for Women,’’ the College— without any library or laboratories—may be regarded as an expression of the personalities of such distinguished teachers as Dr. and Mrs., Burwell, Miss Lily Webb Long, Dr. Wm. R. Atkinson, and President James R. Bridges. Then, in 1912, the College was moved to Myers Park and given the restored name—Queens, from the title of the Colonial school, Queens Museum. Capt. William Anderson and Dr. W. H. Frazer placed the College on a sound financial basis, expanded its physical equipment in terms of buildings, library, laboratories, and established its State and regional accreditation—all in the relatively short period of twenty-six years. Notable women who contributed to the curriculum and the organizational development of Queens College during this period were Dean Sallie McLean and Dean of Instruction Elizabeth H. Blair. Born in a hotbed of Whig democracy, Queens College has pre- served through the years the democratic tradition on which it was founded. Today this tradition is the strengthening fibre in all phases of the college life—student government, religious interests, social activities, student-faculty relationships, and intellectual opportunities. The government of the students, by the students, and for the students is representative of the democratic heritage of the Ameri- can people and their way of life. Each student has a voice in the activities of the student government organization through leaders she has elected. Moreover, each student has the power to express her opinion on all issues which are pertinent to the government of life in the college community, and to decide these issues by exercising her right of free ballot. The religious activities on the campus are voluntary. The freedom of religious preference, in keeping with the principles of a true democ- racy, is recognized, and is evinced in the frequent visits to the campus of selected representatives of different faiths. Membership in the various social organizations is an individual mat- ter, each girl thereby accepting the responsibility of contributing to the organization of her choice. Each group within itself adds some- thing in democracy of spirit to the college, functioning both as an individual unit and as a related part of the whole community. The relationship between students and faculty is a unique one at Queens in that the students and faculty meet on amicable grounds, not only as teacher and pupil, but as real friends. The members of the faculty and administration are ready and capable when called upon to help with personal and group problems, and the students, respecting their experience and judgment, are encouraged to rely on their wise counsels. Furthering the democratic standards at Queens, students are left to choose their vocations according to their interests and abilities, and, with some guidance, to plan a full course centered about the major interest, with some experimentation in other fields. In keeping with the cardinal ideals of a democracy deep-rooted in the hearts of a people are the standards at Queens which are raised today, to be perfected TOMORROW. Queens College looks towards tomorrow. It is the to- morrow in which we hope many of our dreams will become realities. Out of our present Queens College, which we love now, we look for the Greater Queens, which will serve ever more efficiently the girls of tomorrow, some of whom may be our own daughters. The clouds of war have darkened our sky, but they will not hang forever over our earth. We believe that our College belongs to those permanent institutions, which will abide because its services will be needed always. A great college is not built overnight. It will rise stone by stone, and step by step. Already the Board of Trustees and the Faculty carefully have prepared plans so that each successive step in the future development of the College will lead forward to the completed whole. It will not be a haphazard building program, a jumble of hurried undertakings, which will not fit together. It is rather the building into a master plan where the college of tomorrow will rise slowly as the arches of a cathedral. The Greater Queens must be a cooperative undertaking. Many hands will build through many years. No part, how- ever small, will be unimportant. The larger program will only be successful as every student who enters the College catches up the spirit of Queens and enters with enthu- siasm into the dreams. We face the future—the long, long future of the coming centuries. Queens College will have her part in creating that future and may the days to come be better because together we have built wisely and well. THE CORONET OF 1942 IS DEDICATED TO THOSE QUEENS STUDENTS OF THE PAST; who lighted the torch of tradition; TO THOSE OF THE PRESENT; who have cherished its bright flame, AND TO THOSE OF THE FUTURE, who, accepting the trust, will hold it high— OUR PRESIDENT Dr. Hunter B. Blakely. M.A., Th.D., D.D. Dr. Blakely’s friendly counsel and kindly guidance have meant much to us who have known him since his acceptance of the presi- dency of Queens College in 1939. His contagious optimism is wide- spread on the campus both through the informal talks which the students feel free to have in his office at any time, and through the talks he makes to the student body as a whole. His devotion to the most minute of our individual problems and his personal interest in the solution of these problems are the qualifications which best fit him for the office of Our President. October—I cut my first teeth on the individual pictures of the students and faculty. The business staff planned to finance my way through college. November—My theme was decided, and I began to grow up. For the first time I knew the meaning of makeup. December—Ah! Christmas. I had my first date . . . line. January—During exams I was the forgotten woman. February—Pictures and more pictures—I almost felt like a movie star. Staff meetings dragged out the family skeletons and ran up and down my family tree. March—The wind blew and blew just pages and pages of papers all about me. Experts predicted that I would be the most glamorous and popular annual of this season. April—My! How my acquaintances did broaden! Funds available were counted and heads shaken sadly. There couldn’t be a Quill on ten dollars and the print- er’s good graces. But someone had an idea. The Government was taking lapels off coats and cuffs off pants and making it the style to be without them. Why couldn’t the Quill do something like that? And so it came about that an Emergency issue was put out, with a splash of printer’s ink to reproduce Hattie Henderson’s block prints, hours of pen-chewing and inspiration after Lights- Out, aching arms from mimeographing with stencils that had to be coaxed in soft language to prevent smudging, Eleanor and Norma pacing streets for ads, sorting pages, and stapling, finally the Quill itself, a turned-out-by-hand issue in a brave cover of red and gray. It is a group of stu- dents in a college or university, meeting regularly for the purpose of discussing problems of an international nature toward obtaining a broad view of such problems. It is an affiliate member of the clubs sponsored by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. There is such a group located on Queens campus, because college girls here, feeling the need, as have students in other institutions, for a systematic study of problems—a study based on a non-biased knowledge of today’s actualities, have associated themselves to- gether for intelligent discussion. In order that this group may be most efficient, membership is limited to twenty-five girls, selected on the basis of general scholar- ship and special attainment in history — girls who have evinced some promise of leadership and who show an inclination to the serious study and investigation pertinent to the International Re- lations Club. Officers for 1941-42: Elizabeth Isaacs, president; Harriette Scog- gin, vice-president; Dorothy Ballard, secretary; Cora Wayland, treasurer. HOME ECONOMICS CLUB The Home Economics Club is composed of those students who have expressed definite interest in the department. The objec- tive is to promote good fellowship and happiness among members of the department and to encourage interest in Home Economics activities. The Dramatic Group encourages study, use, and enjoyment of the standards of drama, play production and stage technique. The Debating Group fosters an interest in all types of forensic activities. It encourages the use of the proper forms in debating, as well as careful thought and consideration on subjects which will be of value to the college. The Book-Tea Group fosters an interest in current books of all types and learns to evaluate books by the standards of good literary criticism. It also selects outstanding books each year to add to the Book-Tea shelf in the Li- brary. The purpose of each of the groups and of the Spectator Club as a whole is to encourage cultural tastes and to develop grace and poise in self-expression. Every student of Queens College is eligible for membership in this society. QUEENS COLLEGE CHORAL CLUB The Queens College Choral Club is an organization which exists primarily for the purpose of bringing together all members of the student body who have the desire and ability for ensemble singing. The present membership numbers fifty-five. From this number, twenty-five are chosen to be the chapel choir, singing responses and occasional anthems at the chapel services throughout the year. This choir has extra rehearsals in which to study sacred music and madrigals and to prepare for programs where a small choral group is desired. During the past year, the entire choral group has appeared publicly in the “Messiah”, the “Elijah”, and Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” as well as giving regular programs at Queens and Davidson Colleges with the Davidson Glee Club. ip—I QUEENS COLLEGE ORCHESTRA The college Symphony Orchestra is a rapidly growing organization on the campus which is open to all the students. The majority of the members are music students because admission is conditioned by ability, but many non-music students have found in the organization the opportunity to experience ensemble playing, to participate in the orchestra’s objective of creating interest in music both for those performing and those listening, and to worthily use leisure time in ad- vancing herself and her associates musically. The full orchestra combines regularly with the Davidson musicians to make the Quecns-Davidson Symphony Orchestra, which has given two major programs with soloists and accompanied several major choral works. The entire group is divided into smaller ensembles, which combine with similar Davidson College groups. The most active is the Queens-Davidson Little Symphony which has participated in a series of programs at the Mint Museum, college musicals, and has made several concert tours through surrounding cities. 7 he other groups, string orchestra, radio broadcast orchestra, and chamber orchestra have also gained wide recognition for their activities in civic projects, radio broadcasts, and public programs. Barrentine, Allen, Hamlett, Henderson, Funderburke, Grey, Seitter. - '• V. • !' - • • « '•'■W « — QUEENS ART LEAGUE Let’s go around the palette with the Art Club. For our Senior colors, we have in the green paint a “Tip” for Miss Allen; and of course, that “Empish” blue for Miss Seitter; and a “Dot” of yellow for Miss Funderburke. In our Junior colors, Jane tries to combine a little “Grey” with that straw- berry smock; and why should gay Hattie choose blue? For our Sophomore colors. Martha contributes a “Summer” ( ville) orchid; Tommy chooses a “Scott” blue; Blanche insists upon “Med.” (berry) laven- der; and little Sally brings in a second “Pard” (t)” (ee) of the pale lavender. Of course, we can’t leave out the Freshman colors. The little Williams girl wouldn’t dare “Rid” us of fuschia; and that Howard girl puts in her “Bet” (ty ) for another green. Thus, we have this group who make up a nice palette for our honorary Art Club to be developed by the new little “Hamlett” brush. Each is as indi- vidual as her color. QUEENS PLAYERS Mary Catherine: Martin Nancy Gaston Mary Lazenby Margaret Powell Adelaide Henry Hilda Foreman Mary Boykin Moore: Margaret Davis “Poise and Speech through acting,” the purpose of the Queens Players, be- came a reality this year in their one major production and numerous special re- citals and variety programs. The project for the fall term was organization and development of a speech choir. Unique in Charlotte, the group did splendid work and presented, as a finale, a chapel program of Biblicah and poetical selections. “Ladies in Waiting,” by Cyril Campion, was produced in the spring term under the direction of Miss Ethel King, head of the Dramatics Department and sponsor of the club. A moving drama of atmosphere and character, this play was admirably produced and well received. Queens Players included in the cast were: Mary Catherine Martin, Mary Lazenby, Margaret Powell, Adelaide Henry, Mary Boykin Moore, and Margaret Davis. Hilda Foreman and Nancy Gaston assisted backstage. Membership in the Queens Players is open to all students in the Dramatic Arts Department. - v-v «t frfk • ?ir '-i 4 ,y-fcv Martin.
