FOREWORD In 1933 and 1934, prompted by the Chicago Fair, the world looked back upon “A Century of Progress. Now, in 1939, its eyes are forward turned toward “The World of Tomorrow It is fitting for a college yearbook to take this, the theme of the New York 1939 World's Fair, for its own; because, after all, we, the college students of Today, will be the planners and builders of that World of Tomorrow, and its first citizens. DEDICATION And. with the same thought in mind, it is also fitting that this, the 1939 CORONET, should be grate- fully inscribed to those men and women who, with the foresight of the wise, have dedicated time and money to Queens-Chicora College and to its students, in order that the Youth of Today may be better citizens in the World of Tomorrow. - SAW THE VISION OF THE WORLD.. President For seventeen profitable years Dr. Frazer has been President of Queens- Chicora College. Ever endeavoring for the betterment of the college and those who were a part of it, he has led the way steadily uphill toward the peak of perfection; putting into his every step devotion and hard work. Fie has suc- ceeded in making Queens-Chicora a great institution, and building upon the foundation he has laid, we can strive toward ever greater achievements. While we deeply regret that we must lose him, we feel that not a sad song, but one of triumph should be sung for his influence on our campus. Our sincere love and appreciation, and the promise of a future reward are embodied in these words from Matthew 25:21 — Well done, thou, good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things. I will make thee ruler over many things.” QUEENS-CHICORA EXECUTIVES Dr. Samuel C. Byrd A.B.. A.M., D.D., LL.D. Presi dent-Emeritus Since the merger of Queens College with Chicora College in 1930. This tourna- ment proved to be a very colorful one with each class wearing colors and led by a husky, lusty cheerleader. These games were very exciting and showed that Queens-Chicora had some excellent players. Much comment and furror was made when the Juniors and the Freshmen tied the score in their first game. At the playover. however the Freshmen were the victors. The Seniors beat the Sophomores and after this game everyone was running around saying that Norma Moore could throw a basket blindfolded and about a million miles away. The final victory belonged to the Freshmen when they defeated the Seniors, proving that they were really fast and capable. Nancy Walker was cheerleader of the Freshman class and Jane Montgomery was captain of the team. The rest of the members of the team were Inez Malone. Flora MacDonald. Margaret Alexander, Anne Peyton. Louise Collins. Sarah Taylor. Mary Katherine Martin, and Cora Wayland. Mildred Taylor, captain of the Sophomore volleyball team, was also captain of this basket- ball team. Olivia Gillespie. Mary McDevitt, 1034 Ardsley Road____________________Charlotte, X. C. A FINAL WORD Well, girls, this is the end! Thank Goodness!! Here you have the completed book: the pictures of as many of you as we could back into having your pictures taken; snapshots of everybody and everything that the snapshot editors could find (and we had four of them on the job) ; all of your organizations; the beauties; May Day; and even some ads! Mental note for you: if I have left any- thing out, why don’t you suggest it to Gin for next year. But before you close the book, Ruth and I want to tell you what a good time we have had doing this for you this year. It has been lots of fun. We have had to work; but our staffs have been so good about helping that we hardly minded even that. And there have been other people who have helped to make this the most pain- less annual we ever saw, too; Ruth and I would like to thank them, along with our staffs, for their assistance. There is BRADSHAW CRANDELL, who picked the Beauties; and Mrs. St. JOHN, who took their pictures (besides taking the pictures of all the rest of us “not-so-pretties”), and HARRY and JOE HUNTINGTON up there at the Studio. And then we would like to thank JANE STAINBACK, and BUCK, and every one at the Engravers who helped; and HARRIE KECK, down at the Observer Printing House. Thanks, too, to Dr. STOUT, always so ready to advise on any matter; and to all of the others that I could not even begin to mention, including our advertisers. And now it is time to say, The End. And we hope that you like this, your 1939 CORONET. Ruth and Sue.
