PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS SS iftiftw i y aELxu: 'Ll —1-1 s „r_l HELEN JORDAN - - - Editor GEOHGIE UNDERWOOD - Bus. Mpr. FOREWORD We want this volume of the COR- ONET to be a picture of your campus life for 1938. There is no definite theme; there are only informal pic- tures of students, faculty, and campus forming the letters of the divisions. This is a book that you yourselves have made; we offer it for your en- joyment. CONTENTS Book I.......... Administration Book II.................Classes Book III.............Activities Book IV Sorority Book V................Features Dr. Samuel In loving appreciation for his friendship and teachings. we. the class of 1()38, dedicate this CORONET. DR. WILLIAM HENRY FRAZER, President Dr. Frazer became president of Queens Chicora College in 1921. During his fiist year, the students received the privilege of self-government. For several years. Dr. Frazer worked to pay off the $60,000 debt; and not con- tent with reaching this goal, he successfully managed to raise an endowment of several hundred thousand dollars. Under his guidance many buildings have been added to the school equipment: the practice house; the Godard’s house: the sorority houses: the Day Student house, Blair Union; and the Sara E. Morrison Dining Flail. During Dr. Frazer's administration the library has been extended from twelve hundred to approximately fifteen thousand volumes, the curriculum has been advanced in many ways. and. as a crowning event, Queens Chicora was admitted to the Southern Asso- ciation of Secondary Schools and Colleges in 193 2. Dr. Frazer's ability lies along more than just these material lines. He also has extended the name and patronage of Queens Chicora College through- out the South. Since 1 930 when Chicora College was merged with Queens College of Charlotte, N. C.. Dr. Byrd has been an active influence in the lives of the girls with whom he has come in contact. He is the President-Emeritus of Queens Chicora College and has acted as Registrar since the merger. His life of daily loving service and Christian ideals has had a deep part in the character development of the students with whom he has had association. MRS. VIRGINIA MILLER AGNEW Dean of Women A.B.. President ELEANOR Alexander. Secretary and Treasurer The Spectator Club is the literary organization on our campus and is open to every member of the student body of Queens Chicora. The Club is made up of three separate groups, Book Tea group, Dramatic club, and Creative Writing group to suit the varied literary interest of the members. Prominent speakers are often invited to talk to the different groups on their particular interests and the entire organization is one of cultural and social benefit to its members. Alexander Page Ninety-eight The primary interest of the Dramatic Club is reading and studying plays. During the year the members of this group stage and produce at least one play for a public performance. Caddie Willis is the leader of this group. For those who like to write, the Creative Writing group meets to criticize original literary efforts in both prose and poetry and to encourage more valua- ble writing. Sue Mauldin is in charge of this group. The Book Tea group buys many of the best sellers of the year which are reviewed and discussed at the regular meetings. Rose Shanklin is the leader of this group. Page Ninety-nine Calder Gardner Gunn Hackney Johnston Laffitte Martin Mauldin McDonald Morrison Rayburn Shatzer THE 1938 EDITORIAL STAFF Editor............. VOLLEYBALL Senior Team Sophomore Team Juniors, not having a full team, forfeited to the Freshmen who lost a hard fought game to the Sophomores with a score of 20-22. The Seniors found the traditional “Just enough” team and played a good game even with their lack of prac- tice. They lost the final game to the Sophomores, 12-10. The volleyball season at Queens-Chicora was a colorful one, but came to a somewhat belated close. After repeated postponements of the tournament, a date was set. This date however, found Miss Henderson and half the Junior team abed with influenza. Jo McDonald was put in charge and the games were played at the Y.W.C.A. The Junior Team Freshman Team BASKETBALL Senior Volleyball Team Sophomore Team The interclass basketball tournament, played March 22. 23, and 29 and climaxing the basket- ball season, proved that Queens-Chicora has some very quick and capable players. From the com- ments beard after the games, these could be judged probably the best and fastest games seen at Queens in many years. In the semi-finals on March 22, the Sophomores won over the Seniors, and the Freshmen and Juniors tied 25-25. The next night, the Fresh- men lost to the Juniors by a score of 25-27. T he finals, played March 29, resulted in a vic- tory for the Sophomores by a score of 3 3 to 30. Junior Team Freshman Team Among the outstanding players were Anne Fuller, Martha Stoner, forwards; Betsy Springer and Elizabeth Gammon, guards. The Day Student and the Boarder Teams were made of the best players from the best of the class teams. Members of the Day Student Team are Dorothy Alexander, Lib Calder. Martha Grey. Lucille Gwaltney, Norma Moore, Sara Paxton. Laura Query, and Betsy Springer. Members of the Boarders Team are: Ellenore Eddy, Anne Fuller, Virginia Garrison, Madeline Lotterhos. Mildred Lowrance, Lillian Sample, Martha Stoner and Jennie Lynn Wright. The Boarding Team won 30 to 20. Outstanding players were Norma Moore, Mildred Lowrance, and Jennie Lynn Wright. POPULAR Red Cross Life Savers Archery The girls that have passed the Senior Life Sav- ing tests are: Ruth Knee, Sue Mauldin, Ruth Mor- rison, Anita Stewart, Adele Sutherland, Betsy Tingley. One of the most popular sports, especially in the fall, if archery. Outstanding participants are: Virginia Taylor, Carolyn Sibley, and Ruth Mor- rison. Experience is yours, brief Beginning of the whole learning of your life. Still you have lived You now are living. Tomorrow you will live—brighter for having lived Today and yesterday.” And so I say, not. 'Today begin”, but Live on Hold fast the gift of Life 1 hat always has been XT 9 9 i ours . Helen Jordan. Page One Hundred Forty-five SENIOR CLASS HISTORY “Who can say Why Today Tomorrow will be yesterday?”—Tennyson. When we were admitted to Queens-Chicora College four years ago, no one of us realized how quickly four years could pass. What has seemed short in pass- ing must be crowded with interesting events to seem long in retrospect so that we cannot hope to recall completely the gaiety, sobriety, fun, and work that have filled our last four years. Our class leaders for four years here have been outstanding ones on our be- loved campus. Lucille (Ashley, now) Dulin was our versatile chairman in our weaker freshman days. Mary Currie, who was sophomore class president among other things, showed her capability and dignity by being elected presi- dent of our Student Government Association. Witty Lil' Smith (one of the clever Smith sisters) has been our much to be admired leader for two consecu- tive years. Every student organization, we believe, has profited by meeting members of our class. Because of her sympathetic understanding of our prob- lems, we will be forever grateful to Mrs. J. L. McEwen, our class adviser. There are those events in these last four years that will put a smile in our eyes and rhythm in our walk, even if we live to be our four score and ten years young. (Yes, we intend to stay young.) Included in these souvenir events are such things as the Sophomore-Senior breakfast. Dr. Kratz’s teas for students, Alpha Kappa Gamma’s impressive tapping ceremonies, the Thursday chapel talks, the Christmas parties, especially the ones sponsored by the Home Eco- nomics Department, the Community Concerts, Wednesday night formal din- ners, the Queens Players productions, football weekends, the opening of Senior Hall, the radio programs recently established under Dean Godard’s competent guidance, and last but not least of our kaleidoscopic view is our own gloriously exciting Senior Week. Page One Hundred Forty-six Stunt Night was one of the most thrilling times of the year. I he cup went to us in our Sophomore year for our ethereally exquisite “Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp”. This year we were wild with joy when we won the cup with one of our favorite childhood fairy stories—“Hanzel and Gretel ’—done in weird and w'himsical marionette style. May Day was one of the most anticipated days on our annual calendar. Our class has had the joy of possessing some of the queen’s most beautiful attendants. This year our heart fills with pride when we think of our Helen Jenkins and her grace, dignity, and glowing charm. But let me warn you: May acts very much like April—smiles one minute and tears the next with the unexpected almost always happening. There’s only one more hurdle to leap—yes, we mean examinations. There’s always effort—more or less—at such a time as a hectic week of examinations. We feel that we have gained by this requirement, however menacing it may have appeared at the time. Our achievements, of course, are as varied as there are members of our class. What we have gained is scarely measured by cold factual evidence on record cards. Why? Because besides growing mentally, we have grown spiritually and socially. Scholarship is a most difficult something to measure. There have been changes in us both as individuals and as a class. The edu- cational process begun here on our beloved campus has necessarily been colored by the attitudes, ideals, and standards of our friends both among professors and students. We know that the future is always uncertain. However, we sincerely hope for each of us that our education will continue to be toward that solid goal of an integrated personality in a distintegrated world”. By Doris Joines. Page One Hundred Forty-seven CLASS SONG Arise, Arise, and sing of ’38 Ye daughters one and all; Lift your voices, answer loud and clear Alma Mater's call. We stand together as we pledge Our love and loyalty; And our heaits are ever turned Blue and Blue to thee. We’ll take our place and bravely we wil stand, Our hands firm clasped in thine, As down the years thy children march In one unbroken line. Harriette Lee Truesdale. They are living better, more comfortably, without the drudgery, labor and worry that attend the old methods—they are actually LIVING BETTER for LESS. It costs the average family less per day than the cost of a single package of cigarettes to cook electrically. Automatic hot water service through an electric auto- matic water heater is available also to the average family for less than the price of a package of cigarettes per day. The cost of electric automatic refrigeration to the average family is little more than the cost of a package of chewing gum per day.
